@izzion it's already in limited preview - you know, the GMail style early beta.
Yeah, but in this modern era, products come and go without ever actually being launched out of preview/beta
-
@Arantor It's apparently based on (the open source version of) VS Code, so it shouldn't be too hard to switch
ifwhen Google gets bored with it.

If an application is literally built on top of a web browser and has plugins written in web technology, it’s web based. The fact it’s running 100% locally doesn’t change that.
Alternatively if I access an application via HTTP on localhost:80 that’s not web based because it’s only on my machine?

I'd not even consider that web based. I'm accessing it on my computer, it's running on my computer. The web isn't involved.

vscode.dev can solve that problem!
FWIW, I like calling these things "websites in a box", since they boil down to a very fancy website running in a custom browser.

Seems like the type of phishing security training email a former cow-orker of mine loved to send out.
-
Of course now you have the people going “but Stadia had a similar declaration of not going anywhere 2 months before it was shitcanned”.
And then they point to the price hike Google Workspace just had as well.
Time will tell.
-
@Arantor GMail is not going anywhere. It's free data harvesting, which is directly related to their core ad business. (For some mystery reason.)
However, if it went away, that'd be the perfect kick in the ass I need to finally move off of GMail.
-
@topspin I could see GMail changing though: I haven’t used the web interface in many years but it doesn’t show ads, right? I’m wondering if this is a softener for “actually we need to show ads or charge you for the service” because TANSTAAFL.

Good point, so I asked the internet hive mind.
And it turns out that apparently Gmail does show ads. Which means we’re back to and wait and see if Google makes any announcements. They do have plenty more products they can kill first.

I read the image first and then the rest of your post. I want you banned for getting my hopes up.
It's kind of funny how bland and corporate that message is. You could swap in just about any communication platform with minimal editing.
Reminds me of the really weird press conference in 2022 for Microsoft hardware. If I didn't know it was specifically for Microsoft it would have taken a few minutes to twig it.

Those exist on desktop.
if it was just that i'd probably get a hardware device. they exist too.... but desktop versions are also valid.
@pcooper said in Killed by Google:
Well, I just told mine I don't have a phone and they got me a hardware token.
I currently use a TOTP app and that's worked fine for the past five years.... and if i get locked out my response is likely to be "Look if you're making me get an app on my phone to access work you're fucking buying me a phone and data plan for that cause work shit aint' going on my personal phone. you got away with hanging out on my TOTP authenticator app cause that is passive and has no web connectivity.... you aint' getting away with an app that needs one byte of network traffic"
I understand the sentiment and the idea of fundamentally not giving an inch out of principle.
But in this case I'd much rather make my own life easier. I don't want a work phone. I don't want to carry a second phone that I don't otherwise need, which has the compute power of people's gaming chairs, probably runs Android, and will just end in a landfill at some point.I have the position that work phones, unless I get paid for being available 24/7 stays on the desk at all times. I started doing that on my first programming job when they suddenly said that we could not use the work phones for private calls or internet use.
Well, fuck you then was my response. I gave my private number to my closest manager and told her she's welcome to call in emergencies, but my work phone stays on my desk because the company isn't willing to pay for the privilege of it going where I go.

"On my desk" would still mean having to move it between the desk in my office and my desk when I'm Working From Home. Really, I don't require a separate phone just to have some Microsoft Authenticator app running on it. I put it on my private phone. For all intensive porpoises, it's isolated enough from the rest of the system.

I have an authenticator on my phone too (Duo) and I use it for 2FAing for work and Github. Not everything at Github is work-related either...
No other work stuff on my phone except for a few web pages open.

One of us is, the other is a native speaker of a foreign dialect that inexplicably calls itself English but isn’t really.
I’ll leave it to you to debate which is technically which

Envious is an exact synonym for jealous. It is incorrect to imply they are not synonyms.

Envious is an exact synonym for jealous. It is incorrect to imply they are not synonyms.
Envy is when you want what someone else has, but jealousy is when you're worried someone's trying to take what you have.
Though in recent times jealousy has also come to include envy but the Cambridge dictionary does list both (and the worry over someone taking what you have is listed first)
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/jealous does point this distinction out. https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/envy does not because envy has never had this blurred definition.
They are not synonyms.

A dialect is simply a variant of a language. By admitting that Americanese is an English dialect, you are admitting that Americanese is English. If Americanese is not an English dialect, but still a dialect, then you would still have to say what language of which it is a dialect.

Well done for falling for the .
I sometimes try to distinguish between jokes where the foundation is correct and where it is not, i.e. dumb jokes. This is not appreciated by all.
I wouldn't have contested it if you had said that American English is not English at all, but an English creole. But given that the joke was about the poor English of those dumb American planks, it seemed appropriate to comment on the wording of the criticism.
But we're getting off-topic...
