is the count to try, right? You're passing the IP address as the count.

What VM are we talking about? This is a physical machine in my house that mysteriously becomes unroutable at random times.

Oh, I see! I'd probably write that a little differently, but that's OK.
You might want to pass the
-n
option to ping to tell it to not resolve addresses to names in its output; you don't care about the names of the systems you're pinging, just their availability.
