it should just count every framework that it could possibly need, and then skip the ones that it doesn't.

    COUNT ALL THE THINGS!

But seriously, the key issue is that the first thing it needs to do is to get the descriptors for all the frameworks/libraries that it needs. That could be fast or could be very slow; the slow option would be expected if an HTTP connection was needed for each, whereas if there's a single service which knows it all and which can provide all that stuff in effectively a single query, the key initial stage will be fast.

Once you're going to the effort of downloading descriptors at all, they might as well include the sizes of the actual artefacts in the descriptors and that makes computing the overall progress bar length trivial. (BTW, there should also be a bit of overhead per downloaded file; those per-file overheads often dominate on high-speed connections…)

It is not just what it needs (directly), but what those elements [produced by third parties] determine that they need, which will trigger additional items needed (and authored by a different set of parties.).

Try a quick experiment with either nuget or npm. Determine how much space the entire dependency tree will download without actually downloading anything....

It completely flies in the face of your expectations.

What's even better is an OS like Android, which is mostly Mac-like with the button positioning, but every so often someone coded their own dialog box and it's like Windows.

They switched it too, at one point.

Which isn't a problem for anyone who uses the default system theme.

So basically everyone's apps were fucked, because apparently it's a good idea to redesign their theme from scratch.

That's why it isn't just a matter of fetching the basic descriptor off the direct dependencies; if you've got a service that knows all that information (as it's going to be at most a few kB per library and hardly anyone really goes for having more than a million libraries) then it can provide the full set of descriptors that you care about with a single call. Which is what I was talking about.

It's also totally the sort of thing that you'd install in-enterprise, especially if you're dealing with non-open dependencies.

  • I love DataCamp but this is just a good old are-you-fucking-kidding-me feature

Oh wow let's switch to dark theme cos that's the one I use everywhere. Click!

    WOW. MUCH DARK!

Could be worse. Switching the background to black without changing the colour of any of the text would definitely impact readability more than a bit…

This is another case of "Apple does it and nobody cares, but when Microsoft does it suddenly there's gnashing and wailing".

Fun fact: under Apple app store rules, an app like Firefox, Edge, or Chrome must be labeled as "for adults only" due to the fact that they have the ability to visit the internet, which contains porn.

Which means that by Apple's own rules, iOS devices come with a porn app pre-installed.

Sounds a bit like the FDA rules that forbid selling vitamin C supplements as a cure, treatment, or preventative for scurvy or thiamine supplements for beriberi.

I have a problem with CANCEL and OKAY. I would have preferred GO BACK and YES. Maybe this is just me but I literally clicked on CANCEL and after a fleeting microsecond I realized cancel was not CANCEL. Goddamnit.

Are you okay with cancelling this request?

@stillwater my guess is that they're using a Google account for sending the email, and that they didn't go back into the account settings and tick the "allow less secure access methods" (or whatever it's called) when Google turned that off for everyone.

I suspected something along the same lines but I just don't care anymore. Half the websites out there are broken when it comes to the Job Application pages, even big companies. I'm only genuinely surprised when a form actually goes through.

I'd rather have in-game currency instead of TYPEVALUE! or VALUETYPE!

  • @stillwater You should try Alaskan Airlines' job portal.

Back when I was unemployed and looking, most job sites, crafting a cover letter, uploading all the info, etc. Maybe 30-45 minutes tops.

Alaskan Airlines' job portal is so shitty it took like 2 hours and I'm not even close to confident I did it right. (It has this lovely thing where it asks you to upload a resume but then you also have to type in your job history manually, and the "add job" button and "submit list" button I think I got confused so I'm pretty sure I submitted a job history with just one job? Then I couldn't figure out how to go back? Anyway it was really shitty.

This is true for literally every huge company websites. So it tries to be smart and parse your resume but parses it fucked up. And you have to again type in all the info with a ton of fucky combo boxes and radio buttons that make no sense. All this protected by a password policy that's designed to annoy the fuck out of you. Everytime I click on the apply button on a job site and it takes me to the company s own careers site I die a little inside.

  • @stillwater The Alaskan one didn't even try, it just wanted the information twice.
