Slack removes IRC, XMPP gateways
-
As Slack has evolved over the years, we've built features and capabilities —
like Shared Channels, Threads, and emoji reactions (to name a few) — that the
IRC and XMPP gateways aren't able to handle. Our priority is to provide a
secure and high-quality experience across all platforms, and so the time has
come to close the gateways.Over the years, my opinion of slack has changed. I still think their clients are hot garbage, but the system itself provides significant benefits over IRC. If slack's client wasn't slow as molasses and was customizable then I think a lot of IRC people might have been OK with using it.

@bb36e If they're currently ok using IRC, why wouldn't they be ok with, for example, just writing their messages on rotten banana peels and posting them to other people by dropping them into a Taco Bell sewer. Which they have to reach into to get replies.
I mean you're already at the bottom, you can't get lower.

The main benefit I see is that lots of people I don't want to talk to seem to use it exclusively, which is great since then I don't see their shit spewing…

Meh, I doubt that was enabled on our workspaces anyway.

@dkf IMO being able to share history and messages across desktop and mobile, as well as history tracking (without provisioning a VPS and setting up a bouncer) is one major benefit. that and inline images.

@timebandit sure, now show me that client running on android. either way, one benefit of one company providing a pair of official clients is that you don't have to do any client-shopping to compare features. as someone who's used linux personally for years, choice sucks when you just want to get something done.
