iOS 11 Thread

So I upgraded today, because why the heck not? AFAIK, I can always downgrade if things go south.
A few things I already noticed:
- the new quick reply dialog is way cooler
- the new pin code screen looks cool
- I can’t force iOS to display the signal strength using numbers anymore, I’m forced to look at the bars. I don’t really miss that, just something I noticed.
- message apps are better featured and I might start using them, finally.
- the new screenshot app is extremely cool, even more: it’s awesome!
- everything looks more Apple Music-y, the new App Store, the new mail app, probably more. This is a somewhat nice surprise, means that Apple didn’t decide to make their music app look different, that it was a direction they wanted to go in. Still, I’m not sure how I feel about that.
- scrolling in safari works a bit different: it keeps going after you take the finger off the screen. I think this has a name and I think it used to do that a bit before too, just now it’s much more visible. Not sure how I feel about that, too.
I’ll need to try out the new files app, too.
What else?
-
Another thing I noticed: when you swipe left in messages, you chan choose to hide alerts for a particular conversation. This one might come in handy.

Ewww.
My wife got the free trial of Apple Music when it first came out. That is a nasty and confusing UI. Almost as bad as Amazon Music

The setup process for iOS 11 really tried to force me into iCloud, which was relatively annoying. In fact I think it did force it; I had to log in, accept the agreement, and then turn off all the apps/sync in Settings later. It also really wanted me to set up Apple Pay; in fact, if I said No Thanks I had a permanent (1) notification on Settings which bothered me. I had to go back in and continue that setup and then bail a little later in the process to get that to go away.
All in all, pretty typical for any phone. Haven't seen anything I'm really excited by yet, but then I use the phone for actual work, so. I did notice that the "Inbox" text in Mail is now
Inbox
which is pretty startling.

i noticed all the IOS devices on our BYOC netweork managed to crash our security gateway appliance with the sheer volume of trafic they generated to apple trying to pull the update.
beyond that it hasn't actually affected me in the slightest. literally nothing changed for me.

The UI has changed a lot since the beginning, the look&feel stayed, but it got much better. If you wanna judge, you should take a look now, but you probably will anyways, since your wife is probably gonna want to upgrade.

Try taking a screenshot. ;)

Thank you! Apparently it’s been invented by the same guy who invented the magnifying glass effect for the macOS dock.

I'd really like to know why the fuck aren't they using P2P between devices. Given that iPhones are generally found in close proximity, and thus would strongly benefit from it, and that the updates must have 15 kinds of cryptographic signatures so there's no chance of tampering.

Because MS already did that, which means Apple can't (oh wait...) invent it.

Oh, and I have friends who have iPhones, and since I work on computers, obviously I know how to fix their problems...

I believe it’s hard to do. Look at how it worked in the MS case: there were multiple problems with the P2P updates to the point where they clogged my company’s network + pegged the CPUs to the point that we had to finally force restart, upon startup disable it + disable windows store updates too, for some reason.

She stayed on iOS 6 until after 8 came out because she didn't like the flat look
-
@kt_ We've had the Internet for 39 years now. I think sending files between two devices on the same network ought to be a solved problem.
OTOH Windows Update always manages to screw up at all tasks no matter how trivial they seem. It's truly a wonder of modern computing.

Yeah, cause no other company ever screwed up a system upgrade. Looking at you, Debian Nerds Group, Canonical, Microsoft, Google.

Google solved upgrades a decade ago. You just throw away your phone and buy a new one.
(Linux distros solve compatibility problems by not changing anything ever)

I believe that’s how the manufacturers solved it, not Google.

AT&T certainly did. Well, on the S4. The S7 seems to still be getting updates... for now.

I also like the new visuals. That when bringing the phone back from sleep first loads the time and notifications and then fades in the wallpaper. And when you unlock the lock screen slides up. It’s really nice. :)
Plus, there’s no app drawer in the multitask view.

It sounds like a conundrum, but it's Apple.
From the article:
Turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reduces your exposure to potential attacks to hardware, firmware and software, so "it's good practice," Barisani told me. Just last week, security researchers revealed the existence of a series of bugs in the way some operating systems implemented Bluetooth that allowed hackers to take over victim's devices as long as the Bluetooth was on
Yeah, a bug that didn’t affect iOS. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean iOS is immune to bugs…
It's worth mentioning that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi will become active again when you toggle them off in the Control Center at 5 AM local time
Ok, if Bluetooth/WiFi could still be successfully turned off from the settings menu, this would be a minor wtf. But I have to remember every day to turn it back off?
I don’t really like this feature. :/
-
@kt_ said in iOS 11 Thread:
I also do dig the new video player controls!
That's also something that needed massive improvement. Why was the big slider thing between the buttons to skip forward and back the volume instead of the timeline location?
-
@kt_ said in iOS 11 Thread:

Also, that's a really badly worded sentence. When I first read it, I was wondering what was special about 5am that meant if you changed the settings at that time they'd flip back on
-
Just found out there’s one thing I liked that is missing in iOS 11: there’s no wishlist in the new AppStore :(
-
Oh, this is a cool feature. Pressing the power button five times consecutively and fast will dial emergency services. :D
-
@kt_ Dialing 911 at any speed is easier and less button press

Not if you can't be seen using your phone. You could do that through your pocket.
-

Not always. In some cases you might not want to look down at your phone.
ETA uh, d hard! Thanks, @pie_flavor!
