I cannot wait until movie theaters go out of business...
-
While there are a couple of nice AMCs (with a low number of recliner type seats) in our area, I usually go to the Regal nearby because it's much cheaper and mostly empty on Tuesdays. (Not that I go very often nowadays.)
We probably have some Alamo Drafthouse-style theatres somewhere in the metro, but I don't know of any. They sound nice, though. :)

@Lorne-Kates Canadians have talkies?
-
@lolwhat I've found that eating and drink in a dark theater is enough of a distraction.
Skip the eating, and you can buy two more drinks, which you use to make any bad movie funny as hell.

Honestly, I don't go to enough movies to be able to say how they are relatively. They're all too damn expensive. I go maybe twice a year.
AMC's policy is the first showing of the day gets matinee pricing, but it's typically only $2 or so off; a bit more if it's before noon. In Dallas, the AMCs have very few showings before noon. I was thinking of going to Allegiant this weekend until I got sick; they wanted $10.16 at the new one with reserved seating and food ordering for an 11AM showing.
Tomorrow, they want the same price for a 1:20 showing of Barbershop: the next cut. (Hilariously, the other AMC, in the rundown Valley View mall, charges $4.32.) By contrast, the nearest Cinemark's cost is $6.15 for an 11AM showing and $7.65 for a 2:15.
For a ~8PM showing, the AMC wants $16.66 and Cinemark wants $9.40. None of these are 3D screens. (I was actually a bit shocked at that $16 ticket. That's pure insanity. I can go to Look Cinemas and the ticket's cheaper, and I can buy booze.)

Did those AMC upgrade with the recliners?

It's a brand-new theater, so it wasn't an upgrade as such. I'm pretty sure it's got them, but I've only been there once, and that was quite some time ago, and obviously I went to a matinee because fuck that price.
Also it's got the eat in the theater thing going on, which is nice, but again, fuck that price. Venetian Cinemas has much more atmosphere and cheaper tickets, and anyone in Dallas ought to at least check 'em out once. Plus, they do recently started doing captioning on the first weekend screening of all movies, which is nice.

@Vaire If movie theaters go out of business then
how are young teenage boys going to learn how to get to second basewhere are young boys going to go on dates with girls?
-
@c62 They aren't going there now, that is the problem AMC was trying to correct by floating the idea of allowing them to text while in the theater

Just the one. The Talky, we call it. I haven't seen it yet. It's only playing in the one theatre, so there's a five year waiting list to see it.

Not unlike the Canadian MRI machine.

My first IMAX movie was a year or so back I think . I watched Interstellar . MINDFUCKINGBLOWN. It felt more like an experience than a movie. Watched it again at the same theatre 5 more times. Money well spent !!!

If Gravity ever comes back to your IMAX, jump right on that.

@Lorne-Kates I saw it on a normal screen in 3D. I can only imagine what it must be on IMAX. Must fuck your innards up in a good way. Wish it comes back.

I went to an awesome movie theatre when I was in Melbourne, Australia
I would have to rate The Astor as the last of the truly awesome Melbourne cinemas. Nowhere near as boutique luxe as the one you describe, but seeing a double feature at the Astor remains IMO the best way to soak up movies yet invented.
