Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems
-
I already told Ben L over chat, but the security cert for forums.thedailywtf.com domain is invalid.
When in threads, the name of the thread is literally nowhere (except the URL, if you count that). The name of the forum sticks with you for awhile as you scroll down, but eventually fades out of view, and then you're in this kind of anchor-less void of post after post with no breadcrumb or anything to root you back to reality. Can we please fix that? Just make the breadcrumb stick with you as it scrolls down.
When composing a topic like this one, there's no tooltips on the navigation(?) buttons at the top of the window. I guess I assume the one pointing right is "submit?" There's no label, there's no tooltip, so I can't be sure, but I also can't find a "submit" anywhere else. I'm guessing this is yet another Discourse-like product where the UI design did not, under any circumstances, involve talking to actual users. Because seriously.
If you're confused about whether the right-arrow button does submit or not, there's a "compose?" link that's virtually impossible to see because it's grey-on-white and approximately font size 6. If you click that it brings up a completely useless lightbox (like the user gives a shit what Markdown is!) and has a link to the Markdown spec apparently. I don't know where the link goes, because when you click it IT DOESN'T OPEN IN A NEW TAB and thus you lose all the typing you just did. Wow. What a great user experience that is. Come on, this is fucking amateur hour. Can't anybody in the open source world test anything?

Not these?
-
@Yamikuronue Those don't show up on my screen, either when I'm composing or editing my post, or when I'm replying to yours.
Which is another issue, when I'm replying to your post the entire thread is gone and I can't see your post! That's a little ridiculous.
But since your screenshot is so different from what I'm seeing, I'm starting to think Ben L is pranking me or something.
-
@blakeyrat Are you on a phone?
EDIT: Apparently not, but you still get served the phone editor UI, weird.
-
@Yamikuronue can confirm @blakeyrat - no buttons for me
-
@blakeyrat @Matches resize your browser to at least 992 pixels wide.
-
@aliceif coincidentally yes, but I wasn't typing that message on a phone or any type of mobile device. I was typing it on a red-blooded Intel I7 PC computar machine.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah that looks really different, did maybe a CSS file not load or something?
I have (and I've changed my theme to Superhero so that's the color difference)

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE SHITTING ME. YOU HAVEN'T FILED A BUG OVER THIS YET?!
In any case, if my monitor is 1920 pixels, which it is, I'm 99.99% sure it's already wider than 992 pixels. Here, judge for yourself:
Yup, 1065 pixels, you can measure it in your own paint program.
Ok, so now the compose window isn't full screen but it gets cut-off at the bottom of th ebrowser window. So Ic an't see what I'm typing right now.I think wordsare gong on but I'm really not sure.

Resize the editor upward with the thing at the top of your editor panel.
It's stupid, I know.
-
@aliceif You know what is the real fun with that?
If you resize it a few times, the min-height of the composer changes along... I had it so big that even maximized composer wouldn't let me see the lower parts of my post...Filed Under: Fun for the whole family
-
Speaking of which, the "reply" and "quote" buttons are kind of counter-intuitive.
If you have something in the post you want to reply to selected, hitting reply quotes that part.
Hitting quote quotes the entire post.
-
Fucking hell, does the editor always maximize by default now just because did so once?
-
@aliceif But I don't want to resize it, I want to move it.
And I DEFINITELY don't want this dumb full-screen mode to be based on the WIDTH OF THE WINDOW that is a concept so utterly retarded I can't even fully comprehend it.
-
@blakeyrat said:

That's how just about everything Responsive works these days. If your screen is small, you must be on a phone.
-
@Yamikuronue said:

But blakeyrat is talking about window size.
-
@aliceif Yeah, most of them use window-width queries as a proxy for screen size: https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/design-and-ui/responsive/fundamentals/use-media-queries?hl=en
It is also possible to create queries based on *-device-width; though this practice is strongly discouraged.
The difference is subtle but very important: min-width is based on the size of the browser window, whereas min-device-width is based on the size of the screen. Unfortunately some browsers, including the legacy Android browser may not report the device width properly and instead report the screen size in device pixels instead of the expected viewport width.
-
Wait....so it's cutting the TOP off of it if you make a separate window because you're window is small? That...seems not optimal in the least.
-
@Yamikuronue It's not measuring my screen, it's measuring my window. So, uh, yet another bug?
And yes I know accurately measuring a screen via the DOM is retarded because the W3C didn't ever think about multi-monitor support and thus it's impossible to communicate to the DOM that a screen isn't the only screen on the computer or, if your browser gives a single value for the size of both screens, that the arrangement is non-rectangular.
While I'm not a mega-genius, how the fuck are you not aware that a "screen" is a different thing from a "window"? And even IF they were basing this decision on the width of the window and not the screen, my window is bigger than the cut-off and still getting full-screen mode so it's fucking broken.
But whatever. It's either hugely broken or a retarded feature we need to turn off post-haste.
-
@Yamikuronue said:

That's not a "proxy" that's a "completely separate value that's utterly orthogonal and whoever thought it was a proxy must have a brain the size of a chickpea."
-
@blakeyrat If you're actually on mobile, it's a proxy, because everything runs fullscreen.
-
I can confirm - snapping my firefox to half a 1080p screen triggers mobile mode. Which seems undesirable.

A) That's not true, and B) I'm not on mobile
I WANT TO TYPE A FUCKING B FOLLOWED BY A PAREN YOU PIECE OF SHIT!

And for one moment, I thought you were trying to be cool.

BTW there's no tooltip on the word "author" so I have no idea what that means. (I can guess, but I shouldn't have to.) There's no tooltip on whatever the icon next to aliceif's name is. A shopping card in a black void viewed from behind? But missing wheels? What is that?
-
@blakeyrat You can choose a group membership to display next to your name in your settings. I chose Author over Mod, though I should probably revert that.
-
@blakeyrat I clicked aliceif's icon and it went to a page (with a HUGE header) that said "Global Moderators". Then I hit back to return here, and I got this:
This is totally amateur hour. I don't believe this is tested any better than Discourse. Maybe the back-end is more reliable, but this front-end seems exactly as bad.

It's not an icon, it's the admins finding it funny to give the moderator group an emoji for the name instead of something like "moderators".
Which is, you know, stupid.
-
@Yamikuronue The point is it's a vague UI element with no tooltip. I don't care which one you select.
-
@blakeyrat said:

No, but it's a link to /groups/global-moderators, so I'd guess the icon indicates membership in that group.
-
@aliceif Wait, why do you get a shopping cart? I have a hat.
-
It's not the most clear of icons

The hat looks like a shopping card according to @blakeyrat.
-
Ok if people (moderators no less) are going to just turn this thread into trash so early, nevermind.
NodeBB is perfect, there are absolutely no flaws, Blakeyrat is just a super mental idiot moron dumbshit for not instantly getting it or telepathically knowing that the window size dictates whether or not you get a full-screen editor.

No, nodeBB's usability is shit.
-
@aliceif Yeah, seriously. I've been posting my findings in the other thread of findings.

AND you have to select the text and hit REPLY to quote a selection?
Side note: You have to hit the picture icon above the reply box to have it take an image url and show an image?!
-
It's great to know my UI decisions are being made on my behalf due to the size of my window, when the NodeBB developers can't even manage to place their own widgets without cutting shit off:
This is fucking amateur hour.
Think about it: the moron who placed his widget in the wrong spot so it got cut off is somehow dictating to me that I MUST use the full-screen editor because I have the audacity to use a window on an OS whose selling feature (and in fact NAME) is that it has windows.
Oh and why did he make that determination? Because of a moronic WRONG belief that all mobile browsers run all browser windows full-screen. Which is just... mind-boggling.
-
@aliceif said:
No, nodeBB's usability is shit.
Agreed.
Discourse was about as stable as a grenade with the pin pulled, but at least 90% of its UI was easy to figure out; with NodeBB, the stability is seemingly unbreakable, but the UX is in the sewers.

Why am I getting notifications that people are "following" me? What does that mean? Why do I care? What is actionable about it?
Oh but I posted to the END of a thread, so I actually have to scroll-UP to see my notifications again, because for some reason my tiny neanderthal brain can't comprehend, the toolbar disappears if you scroll to the end of a topic. Because I guess why wouldn't it?
-
@blakeyrat You can't act upon it. But you now know that these people will get a notification everytime you post a topic...
-
@Kuro I don't need MORE stupid shit junk notifications, Discourse already had way too many. Can I turn it off?

Seems to be a "mobile window size" issue.
-
@blakeyrat It seems not. Maybe @julianlam will want to fix that one...?
-
@blakeyrat Sadly not at the current moment.
I am pretty sure we will cause enough ruckus for the devs to step in and make that a reality, though.
Filed Under: I believe in our power of complaining
-
You get notifications for that too?
Is there anything this software won't notify about? Replies, mentions, all upvotes and downvotes, bookmarks, follows… and 90% of those actions no-one gives a shit about.
@blakeyrat said:
Can I turn it off?
No. And that's easily the worst part of it.

It's not. I'm using a grossly HUGE browser to prevent that from happening again.
