@blakeyrat If that's how you feel about it....BRB

For your safety, we lock down accounts from logins if too many login attempts have been made.
It sure sounds like a bit of a cop-out excuse (like how banks increase your monthly fees "for your convenience"), but we don't want to allow brute forcing, and if we locked down logins by IP, then someone could just hop IPs.
Maybe we can do an exponential timeout for guesses guess wrong thrice? Best wait 200 seconds...

Ok, but:
- That didn't happen in this case, and
- The message doesn't say it's locked-out from too many login attempts
Although I wager that also gives the same useless error message because you never bothered writing a better one.
-
@blakeyrat Dare you to try it and find out for the class.
-
@julianlam If that's what happened, a better error message might help. Something like "We've detected too many bad login attempts from your username recently, and temporarily disabled your account as a precaution. Please wait a few minutes before trying again, and contact an admin if this continues to be an issue."
Maybe also give the option to send a password reset email which lifts the ban immediately when you access the link from the email?
-
@anotherusername ... but yes, we do actually have error messaging for that

Try what? Entering a wrong password 20 times? Sure, I'll quote you $200 an hour to test your shit.
-

I didn't get that message.
-
@RaceProUK said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
APNG
Does any browser actually support that? Last time I checked, I think none of them actually did by default.
-
Apparently

Oh shit, I got the Status thread stuck in a loop. Sorry all. We can only talk about Interfaces now.
-
@blakeyrat Oh Jesus
Now I've managed to reverse time somehow!!! THIS FORUM IS A TARDIS!!!!!
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
THIS FORUM IS A TARDIS!!!!!
Almost. Given the sheer size of the stack that implements it, the miraculous part is how much bigger it is on the outside.
-
@julianlam wait... So I can block blakeyrat's access to this forum by successfully failing to log in as him a couple of times?
... BRB!

@Mikael_Svahnberg what if I, say, did this to PJH, Ben Lubar, boomzilla etc all at the same time? Denial of service attacks like this are why the other systems don't offer this feature ;)

In the case of Boomzilla, he'd probably still see it as a feature that the system actively prevents him from work.
Even the "it takes longer and longer before you can retry again" strategy is prone to abuse. A friend of mine at a nearby company guessed at a couple of colleague's login names and managed to prevent them being able to log in for two hours when they got to work in the morning.

https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/19746/blakeyrat-s-kerbal-campaign-why-not/26
All the fucking image links in my Kerbal thread are broken and open "about:blank". Fucking NodeBB broken shit ass fuckers. Maybe I'll start over on Tumblr.
-
Ok so not only do the kerbal screenshots only work about half the time for some reason, now I'm getting pissed off at all the people putting off-topic shit in my thread. (I don't mind the people who do it accidentally, but the people who SAY it's off-topic but post anyway AND ESPECIALLY THE PEOPLE WHO REPLY TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAY IT'S OFF-TOPIC BUT POST ANYWAY are driving me to kitten-murder.)
Does NodeBB have the ability to create a thread that only I can post in? Or that I can whitelist people to post in?

Yes, it didn't work out.

@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
the password was typed by a super-genius mega-machine which always gets it right
If you're talking about something like KeePass's auto-type, I've seen it goof up and paste incorrectly (typically, it puts the password into the login box for me, but that wasn't what your screenshot showed, so I dunno, maybe you had your murse on your keyboard.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
people bitching to me about rage quits. You'd be doing me a favor.
Right, because you'd care about what a bunch of people you walked away from think of you in a way you didn't when you were still posting here.
-
You have GOT to be fucking shitting me. WTF is this shit?
Please take SOME pride in your fucking work!? Goddamned. If our software did this, I would be fired. Hell, I'd go to my boss personally and say, "you should fucking fire me for that bullshit, holy shit did I fuck up."
(Even worse, I'm pretty sure that error is the result of trying to upload a .webp file-- something which WORKED FINE like 3 weeks ago.)
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

@boomzilla There's like 7 different ways that screenshot is fucking wrong. Yeah, I'm pissed people release hippo shit like this and call themselves "software developers". ANYBODY who does quality software development works should be EQUALLY PISSED that these assholes are out there.
Unfuckingbelievable.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Oh, FFS.
-
@boomzilla This must be what the legit Chiropractors who spent 12 years at school and have medical degrees feel when some asshole dickshit claims he's a "Chiropractor" and massages can cure cancer.
Look at that screenshot again. If you release that product to the public, you are not a software developer. Maybe "software clown" is the term we should use. But certainly not developer.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

You are insane.
-
@boomzilla Yes, I am insanely good at my job (apparently!), and people who write shit like that and claim to be "software developers" are insanely delusional.
-
@blakeyrat And illiterate.
-
@boomzilla Fine, I'm insane and illiterate. But at least I have a sense of pride in my work.
Now I'm going to sit here in my underwear and play Kerbal and watch Damnation Alley, because I took the day off and fuck societal norms.
-
-
@blakeyrat Do you have the Dropbox desktop app installed by any chance? It fucked up the bounds of my alt-printscreen in a similar fashion to what can be seen in that screenshot.
-
@ben_lubar Oh is that what causes that?
Yeah the screenshot is using the wrong rect; it's including area for the shadows when it shouldn't be. I kind of assumed it was a Microsoft update that made that start happening. But God knows, DropBox has been clawing its hooks into everything lately. The add-on it shoves in Office is really irritating.
-
@blakeyrat it used to be avoidable by telling dropbox to not archive screenshots, but now it apparently fucks up your screenshots regardless of that setting.
-
@ben_lubar Eh whatever. It's a pretty minor thing. You wouldn't even notice it if Windows 8/10's flat look had the deep shadows Windows 7 had.
-
@blakeyrat it was pretty bad because it would reveal whatever I had behind the window I was taking a picture of. It's like if someone made a cell phone that automatically takes a picture of your dick when you're taking a selfie.
-
@ben_lubar Well, like 5 pixels' worth. I guess you can make stuff out, but.
-
There, don't say I never do anything for ya.
-
@blakeyrat I gave you an upvote so now we're even I guess
-
@ben_lubar I don't want upvotes.

Enough for his dick.
-
When you edit a post which has a YouTube embed... this happens. I think because the vertical space for the video is getting added twice somehow? That's my guess at least.
Also, it's impossible to have a blank line directly underneath a YouTube embed. The blank line gets swallowed. I attribute this to it using RegEx, and RegEx being blasted roast-ass.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah, it does stuff client side to replace the iframe with a static picture. Changing it to make an API call server-side and then not having the client side mangling is on my list of things to work on.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

that's called a blog
-
@fbmac even Wordpress has that feature.
-
@boomzilla I would create a blackey category for him just to watch the internet drama and the wtfs that would probably follow.
