I am a Developer from India. One among the bunch of guys you hate for writing unmaintainable shit-ass code that you have to fix. Ask me anything .
-
We just "sir" everybody the fuck out though.
Interesting, I thought that was just an American thing.
-
I find it impossible to mentally conjure up an Image of an Indian guy like this.
I meant that he is (or acts) even stupider than the typical incompetent outsourced programmer, so much stupider that he makes them look relatively good by comparison. There is also speculation that he is actually not Indian, but he does a good enough writing broken Indian English and displays sufficient (apparently) local knowledge of some places in India to be pretty convincing. (I lean strongly toward the genuinely Indian, genuinely stupid view of him, myself, but I'm willing to consider evidence to the contrary. I'd rather not, though; I prefer to avoid, as much as possible, thinking about him at all.)
-
All male Sikhs have the name Singh (lion).
That is close to what I was thinking.
I assume people who convert change to incorporate the name into their full name.

I think it depends. I was mostly involved with 3HO Sikhism, which is generally considered a fringe sect by mainstream Sikhs. Converts there changed their entire name, with the men having Singh as their middle name. One of my bosses on the other hand, was a Sikh from India, and he had Singh as his last name.

I wondered about this for a while, however, I don't think there's any reasonable doubt that he's a troll, whether Indian or not. I miss TopCoder!
-

That doesn't necessarily exclude genuinely stupid, and it certainly doesn't exclude genuinely annoying. If there were one user on here that I would mute, it would be Nagesh. However, fortunately, his appearances these days are rare enough that it's not really necessary.

Holy shit. This is thoroughly fucked up.

Umm I thought this guy supplied some Indian humour from time to time and everyone liked him or something?
-
Interesting, I thought that was just an American thing.
I never knew this was an American thing. Where do people sir each other or what kind of people sir others out?
-

A lot of people are amused by him. @HardwareGeek is just not among them.
-

It may not mean what you mean by "sir others out". But in previous centuries "Sir" was only used when speaking upwards, and in Britain it would only be used towards those of an upper class. "Sir" in America is used today, for example, by cashiers towards customers, and also by customers towards cashiers. It's used to indicate deference to authority, but also by others who wish to respect working stiffs. I probably use "sir" multiple times a week, and it is used towards me multiple times a week.
-

Yeah, I would have said that it's just a respectful way to talk to someone. Likewise, ma'am.
-
That Sir! Makes me feel like shit when people sir you cos they have to and they're like 20 years older than you! Embarrassing cringe
-
Have any of you been in "Bro" terms with us folks? Atleast from the other guy's pov?
-
A lot of people are amused by him. @HardwareGeek is just not among them.
Occasionally, but rarely, amused. Mostly annoyed.
-

So you'd probably have a drink with him atleast once?
-
Probably not; the annoyance far, far outweighs the amusement. In his entire, prolific TDWTF posting history, I could probably count his amusing posts on one hand, with fingers to spare, if I cared to wade through the dreck to find them, which I definitely don't care to do.
-
I wonder if Indians would be offended by a soap opera that was broadcasted here in Brazil a few years ago titled "a caminho das índias"

-
welcome back!
:-)

Should I start one as well? I'm from South Korea and 100% of what I worked on identify as shit-ass code that you describe and the management style is very similar to that of your Indian managers.
Help I live in a country where senior devs create CSV columns and don't use the keywords "extends" nor "implementsIncidentally, Koreans started bringing Indian developers into Korea recently.
-
Incidentally, Koreans started bringing Indian developers into Korea recently
Lol. Holy shit man. How are the new imports doing ?
I don't know which thread I should reply to !! .
-
Oh sorry I must have posted my comment wrong. I'm new here.
I don't know how Koreans see them regarding software quality.
I personally have never had a chance to work one of them(Indian programmers in Korea).Incidentally, Koreans call themselves an IT giant country and they think India is one of the IT giant countries too.

I'm new here too. This Discourse shit is confusing.

I mean... they both are IT giants.
They just do a terrible job at it.
No offense meant to those from said countries. Assuming you know what you're doing of course
-
-
Giant, that there are a lot of "developers" and projects going.
Quality? (laughter)
No offence taken, of course.
-
Are you getting paid decently though ?
-
Above the poverty line, certainly. But in Korea, programmer is considered to be one of the 3D jobs. Dirty, Dangerous, Difficult. And the managers expect you to do overtime, practically every night, without question.
How is it in India?
-
Dangerous
What do you mean ?
And the managers expect you to do overtime, practically every night, without question. How is it in India?
Some 40% of the places are this way. some 40% of the places have people getting paid filthy as fuck and don't do shit. The rest 20% is where actual work gets done with normal working hours (except the odd weekends that you have to come in on) and pay is anywhere from abysmal to decent to awesome.
-
The 3D jobs include the garbage men, sewer cleaners, windows cleaners, miners. These are the dirty part.
Programmers would fit in the "difficult" category. And being payed less than what one should get is inferred in the nuance of the word in this language(Korean).
-
How is the work culture? Traditional or western?
We have taken a western working culture and adopted it so badly now it is a indian-ish western working style that works god knows how.
-
Same here. The local culture is very traditional and conservative. Some strict managers will tell you to get a haircut( short) or get rid of that moustache. Stricter dress code is prevalent. Though newer companies are more liberal. Sexism is also prevalent. Female executives are almost unheard of.
This list can go on.
As for myself, I don't give a fecal sample to these "traditions".I'm trying to figure out how good of a developer I am and find a job abroad(but not any country like China, the entire African continent and sadly, not India).
-
I'm trying to figure out how good of a developer I am and find a job abroad
Good luck.
-
Anywhere in Asia (all of Asia), except for Japan, you can assume software development to be treated like sweatshops.
-
I don't know how Koreans see them regarding software quality.
What I know from every single person who had ever worked at Samsung, Koreans there are pretty much fascist, favoring even the most utter shit if it came from a Korean national, all others being disregarded (but used if no Korean comes up with an alternative). This site has lots of interested horror reads on how Tizen is being developed, and I have a few independent sources of my own.
-

My experience with Korean managers is different, but I've never worked for a Korean company.
-
Yeah, just in case it wasn't clear, CSV values in fields, like your Stack Overflow link, are stupid and bad.
There might be limited, specific circumstances where they are acceptable, but the examples you showed are wrong. You're looking for something called a cross-reference table.
-
This Discourse shit is confusing.
looked up momentarily, and a single tear rolled down his face. Then he shrugged and said "it's probably the user's fault. I should go write some code to desaturate avatar colors and then bikeshed the exact percentage of graying over the next 6 months."
-
giants
There's a saying that quantity has a quality all it's own. What usually remains unsaid, but shouldn't, is that that quality is shit.
-
It'll take 6 months to decide on 100%?
-
This is off topic but in Korea there are a few different types of racism. If your manager is a Korean and you are a Korean, he expects you to do overtime without question because he believes that is Korean culture and you must obey this culture since you are a Korean.
Now if you are an expat, there are two ways this can work.
First, if your complexion is darker than ethnic Koreans, they look down on you. You are something less than they(Koreans) are. In effect, this could mean that they will expect/force you to comply. The most interesting part of this is when your complexion is lighter than that of ethnic Koreans.
Most strict cultural rules are pardoned for you.But there are some patriotic Koreans who hate all foreigners anyway.

So
Korean coder = Indian coder + StarCraft
