@DogsB Maybe US IRS can buy the company and release this for free for everybody? Probably cheaper than the alternatives...
-
@cvi The IRS does not want people to have their tax forms filled in correctly though. They want to find a lot of mistakes so they can charge penalties and fines.
-
@Bulb I don't know about the US, but round here the tax authorities don't want people filling in their froms incorrectly, 'coz it's extra work for no extra pay.
-
In contrast: the one time I filed my taxes incorrectly (in my defense, I really didn't know what I was doing -- first time filing taxes in that particular country), the tax office wrote me a letter that essentially said "Dear @cvi, we've reviewed your $YEAR tax declaration and determined that you're an idiot. We've corrected your mistakes. Find corrected forms attached and please review for your information. Based on the corrected filing, you owe us less than you claimed. [...]".
I never quite figured out why they wouldn't just do a first draft themselves, but I'm assuming that tax people are peculiar about this stuff in some ways.

Sounds just about right.

That's pretty much what they've been doing here for the last few years. If you fill in the forms online, they are pre-filled with data reported by employers, banks, &c, and you just need to verify the information is correct and specify any missing items (such as foreign possessions).
Yearly around tax season there's articles about the prepared statement being incorrect and making you pay more than you need to, but whenever I scanned such articles this was always 10 different ways you may want to transfer deductions to/from your fiscal partner.

In a rare walk back... The weebs might be alright in this instance.
-
@PleegWat That's what I was mostly used to from elsewhere.

What country is that? What is their immigration policy?
-
@jinpa The Netherlands. Also known for being in the top 5 for best road network in the world. Not sure on immigration if you're not already an EU citizen.

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.
The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

Or upgrade to Linux
-
@TimeBandit you can't expect the company that sells a Linux-based games console to remember Linux exists
-
@loopback0
Going from Windows 7/8/8.1 to Linux is not an upgrade, it's a switch, so it does not count as an upgrade.
They sell Linux-based console and Linux-based games and provide Linux-based operating system (that runs on that console, but I believe can still be also installed on normal PC), but they have a lot of third-party games in their store that do not have a Linux build. So if someone currently has Windows 7/8/8.1, Linux may, but does not have to, be a full replacement for them.

Sweden does that as well.
I'd say any modern nation should do it like that.

In that case, it is my great pleasure to announce that I have some very attractive deals on mattresses and socks available, only through the end of March!
-
@GOG If hat's not a smart mattress that automatically updates its balance online on social media via a random cloud service in plain text, I'm not interested.
-
@cvi Luckily, all my mattresses are smarter than their owners.

I've thought that you could be given the option and that it would be simple as checking a box. They sort of have that now, but it's a hassle, and it doesn't work right. At least that's been my experience trying it with TaxAct.

Yeah, you can.
You'll need to get employment in Sweden, but given that you're a programmer that'll not be very hard. And then you'll have to jump all the usual bureaucratic hurdles since you're not in the EU/EEA (unless I misremember where you hang out)

"really get going" == several multi-thousand acre fires.
The hills around here usually turn brown by June. Maybe late June.

I was going to say something cynical but we kind of do need a Linux that can run on old phones to keep them in use.

Ah, but children can't be held to contracts they've entered into, according to the law. The mother offered to pay for the goat, so the people that technically broke the law here are the fair people. Who also seems to have lied to the police.

Did the child own the goat, or was it the mother? I'm hearing some logic building up...
Regardless, everyone is wrong and should fuck each other instead.

Seems like the child owned the goat, and signed the contract, yes. Even the buyer was ok with the deal being cancelled, so this was really a case of an asshat in charge, and a kid that had fell in love with her goat.

Dude, you shouldn't say stuff like that when there's a goat and a child involved.

We're after people who are resilient, problem solvers who network and can socialize well with people and are adaptive and flexible.
Are you hiring for IT or a daycare centre. I could probably put that on both job specs.
-
@DogsB linked an article in In other news today... that said:

That's bullshit in a box. And probably now scares the folks who actually have the experience, but don't network and socialize well, a thing the job probably does not require all that much of.
