@dfdub and meanwhile, Sweden isn't banning travel to affected countries, even iran, because people have family there and it would be mean to ban them from travel.
Which would be fine as long as there was sufficient screening/testing, which probably isn't happening due to lack of personnel, right? Seems like all Western governments are completely useless at controlling epidemics.
At least everyone who ridiculed the reaction to the ultimately harmless swine flu pandemic back then now hopefully knows better.
Nope. No screening. And if you want to get tested because you think you've caught it, you can't unless you've got a proven contact with someone infected.
Like I said when Iran went full retard, this is going full pandemic so strap in.
And it's a pandemic now, and it ain't gonna slow down.
The official definition of "pandemic" is such an incredibly low bar to clear that it's basically meaningless, though. Remember Ebola 6 years ago or so? That was technically a pandemic, but it did very little in terms of actual harm outside of Africa.

The US border closing feels to me like a rare case of "too much, too late" and political grandstanding more than anything else.
We apparently have some people visiting from the US at work, and not all of them US citizens (so, various forms of visas, but living there with some degree of permanency). They are now desperately scrambling to get a flight home before the border closes on Friday. Apparently it's getting very difficult to find a flight that goes in time.
Which makes me wonder about the measure. It's definitively going to be less effective by announcing it ahead of time, and at this point, I'm not sure if they are doing anybody a favour either way.

Not necessarily arguing against the travel ban, but rather arguing for immediate effect if you're going to do it. (And, I agree with others upthread that excluding the UK is silly, but whatever.)

Yeah, I dunno, but there are probably logistical issues. I would imagine that Trump himself probably said (or would have) something along the lines of "Start it now!" and someone else more familiar with the details pointed out the problems with that.
I would also assume that someone on the task force came up with the whole thing to begin with, that being their job, though it's definitely possible that Trump had asked them to come up with more travel bans (which seem like pretty obvious ideas at this point).

There is a peaceful hospital occupation going on here, because of constant threats to close the hospital. The occupation itself is a bunch of people sitting in the hospital lobby 24/7 (and they have for the past 3 years). Many elderly people of course, who don't want "their hospital" to go. So what do the dumbshits behind the occupation decide to do in these pandemic times? Call for a big meeting in the hospital lobby to discuss the pandemic of course. Great idea, let's get the entire occupation force potentially sick, along with visiting patiens and hospital staff passing through!
Thankfully, they reconsidered the choice of location and moved it to a different place. Still kinda stupid to call a meeting to discuss a pandemic and have it happen in person with many people gathered in a small area...

@PleegWat In Germany we have the word "Schaffungshöhe" which legally describes that a copyrightable creation has to be "graspable by human senses" and also be a "personal and thoughtful work".
Anything an algorithm creates thus cannot be subject to copyright as there's no mind behind it.
From my quote, (part of) the idea seems to be not that this counts as prior art for any music, but that this proves that music is math which isn't copyrightable in the first place. I'm not sure that's gonna fly either though.
Well, the lyrics, though...?
@Rhywden said in In other news today...:
@PleegWat Well, the problem is that this would mean that all written works are not copyrightable either - due to the Work of Infinite Monkeys.

But what about rhythm/timing?
Melodies that use a 12-note scale instead of the89-note scale they used? (Apparently they're working on this.)
Melodies that extend beyond one octave? (They're hoping other people will work on this.)
Atonal music?
Combinations of chords and "melodies"?
It seems to me that they've hardly scratched the surface when it comes to copyrighted music.Edit: Ah, 'd starting here.

He doesn't even touch on what I consider to be the most relevant reason to legalize marijuana (but only dispensed and dosed by medical supervisors): appetite stimulation in chemo patients. The chemo drugs cause a lot of nausea and pain, the disease that's the reason for the chemo is often itself painful, and chemo makes things taste weird, so chemo patients, especially children, often don't want to eat; so marijuana seems perfectly crafted to help with all that. The drug is fat-soluble, so quitting cold turkey automatically steps the patient down off the drug, so there's no physical addiction issues. The dose level for this use is far below the hallucinogenic levels and it's a relatively short-term use, so there's very little chance of long-term consequences like the mental health issues he discusses. It also deals with pain differently than other medical painkillers like morphine, so it could be used as an alternate or one of several in a cycle of painkillers for people in a whole lot of pain.
But yes, I have no sympathy for people who want to take marijuana recreationally, and I don't believe it would be generally useful outside this narrow range of medical use, so a general prohibition on it with certain exceptions like we have for morphine or codeine would be my preferred legal status for it.
And by everything you hold dear, don't ever smoke it. That's the absolute worst (though most common) way to take it. The dose of drug can be wildly inconsistent, and the tar and smoke don't do anything good to your mouth, teeth, throat, and lungs.

Physically IIRC it is more addictive than THC, though less than nicotine.
Correct. THC is not physically addictive at all. Indeed, it is unusual in that it has a reverse tolerance - frequent use requires less for the same effect.
Because the drug is fat-soluble, unlike most other drugs, so after a few doses, the fatty tissues can't absorb as much, so subsequent doses aren't being dissolved into the fat as much, so less is needed for the same level of effect.

I'd guess that that's so they're letting their body get rid of some of the drug so that the next time they take it, they get a bigger immediate effect instead of just another small effect from consistently being relatively "high" on it.

Are you making a joke about the thin line between physics and chemistry?
Or are you trying to say that weed does not addict chemically? Because in that case you might want to read the first Google result on the subject: https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/marijuana-addictive
Marijuana dependence occurs when the brain adapts to large amounts of the drug by reducing production of and sensitivity to its own endocannabinoid neurotransmitters.

Well, people already use it for that, so I don't see how there can be much surprise:
*googles "coronavirus symptoms"*
*compares own symptoms with lists from results*
*decides might have infection*
*googles "coronavirus testing locations near me"*If they're just streamlining that to make a specific site to provide the best search results and to better integrate with labs to schedule a test, then I don't see how that would necessarily take very much time.
-
@djls45 The problem is that they probably wanted to do an integration so they could make availability / capacity checks for the various sites before sending people there.

The order comes after the Trump administration previously announced restrictions on the number of Chinese citizens allowed to work for five state-controlled Chinese news organizations in the U.S.
These measures, taken by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “are entirely necessary and reciprocal countermeasures that China is compelled to take in response to the unreasonable oppression the Chinese media organizations experience in the U.S.,” according to a translated statement from a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, the NYT reported.
“They are legitimate and justified self-defense in every sense,” the statement continued. “What the U.S. has done is exclusively targeting Chinese media organizations, and hence driven by a Cold War mentality and ideological bias.”
