Java finally got its shit right!

Correct. There is also no 3.5.
Even if it doesn't exist, you can dowload it here : http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=21
@blakeyrat said:Look, the original claim is there were 4 versions of .NET installed on someone's machine. That's not true, because the only part that gets installed is the CLR, and the CLR has only had 3 release-ready versions. I also note that Windows 8 apparently no longer ships with 1.1, so. Two versions.
Yeah, like everybody is running 8, and everything before that doesn't exist.
-
Look, the original claim is there were 4 versions of .NET installed on someone's machine.
Maybe tell us when you change topic mid-argument next time?
-
.NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 are just some new APIs slapped on top of the .NET 2.0 CLR.
-
1.0 of .net was like Apple's OS X 10.0, you're supposed to just kind of ignore it. It's a tech preview with, inexplicably, a production-ready version number.
...because it shipped with Visual Studio .NET. Which is the 2002 version of Visual Studio and also Visual Studio 7.0. Microsoft likes to pretend that doesn't exist as well, but it did and was sold in stores.
It was replaced a year later with Visual Studio .NET 2003 (aka Visual Studio 7.1), which shipped with .NET 1.1.

Directory of C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework
v1.0.3300
v1.1.4322
v2.0.40607 (admittedly that one wasn't release-ready, but still)
v2.0.50727
v4.0
-
Thank you for posting that.
I can't verify myself since I am at work, and obviously, when at work, I don't have access to a toy OS
-

The download is just a text file that says ".net 3.5 doesn't exist." Try it.
Yeah, like everybody is running 8, and everything before that doesn't exist.
Correct.
-

I didn't; that's the thread of conversation we're all replying to. I'm pointing out that with a monumentally rare exception (someone with 1.0 installed), no computer on Earth has 4 versions of .NET installed.
-
Microsoft likes to pretend that doesn't exist as well, but it did and was sold in stores.
So was OS X 10.0.
-
I'm pointing out that with a monumentally rare exception
Do you know the difference between "monumentally rare" and "non-existing"? And between "installed" and "existing", for that matter?someone with 1.0 installed
I had 1.1 installed on my previous PC. Needed for that GTA San Andreas trainer. Also, on the computer I'm using right now, the Uninstall section of Control Panel lists 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 as separate items.
-
Do you know the difference between "monumentally rare" and "non-existing"?
Yeah, 5 letters.
And between "installed" and "existing", for that matter?
Only one letter.
I had 1.1 installed on my previous PC.
Yes, but 1.1 is not 1.0.
Needed for that GTA San Andreas trainer.
Cheater!
Also, on the computer I'm using right now, the Uninstall section of Control Panel lists 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 as separate items.
Right, but it's wrong.

@Gaska said:

Yeah, 5 letters.
I don't think even Discourse's diff is that broken.
-
The download is just a text file that says ".net 3.5 doesn't exist." Try it.
I tried. It's an installer. It would probably install .NET 3.5 if I didn't have 4.5 already, and since I have, it just asks for UAC and then nothing happens. No text about it not existing. You're such a liar.Yeah, 5 letters.
Actually, 13.Only one letter.
Here, it's all the letters.Yes, but 1.1 is not 1.0.
My shoulder alien says that 1.1 is a thing then. Do you agree?Cheater!
After getting legit 100%, I've got bored, so I tried out various crazy things that are impossible otherwise.Right, but it's wrong.
And who is right?
-
This thread is really entertaining.
You actually said that MS released something that was a tech preview with, inexplicably, a production-ready version number.
Now you are saying that MS installer may be listing 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 as separate items but they are wrong.
I think you just made somebody in Redmond cry
-
-
Now I wonder if Vista exists or not.
-
This thread is really entertaining.
Liar.

They did. So have Apple. And KDE, IIRC.
Now you are saying that MS installer may be listing 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 as separate items but they are wrong.
Correct.

Now I wonder if Vista exists or not.
Well, I think everyone is trying to forget it…

Please do try this on your codebase and post reactions and results.
No need to post reactions and results, we'll see them on the front page anyway.

Now all we need is @mikeTheLiar to join this debate.
-
Please, don't make it *worse*. ;)

Wikipedia has seven
Depending on what you mean by "version", 3.0 doesn't count. It's actually an add-on to 2.0. That's why the next version was 3.5.
-
Ok then, count with me :
.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 2.0
.NET Framework 3.0
.NET Framework 4And I'm ignoring minor versions like 3.5, 3.5 SP1, etc
There is no 3.
You have no idea what you're talking about, Blakey. 3.0 was an extension of 2.0, as I said. 3.5 is a new version, what would have been called 3.0 if they hadn't stupidly called "the addon to 2.0 consisting of WPF or whatever" 3.0.
-
.NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5 are just some new APIs slapped on top of the .NET 2.0 CLR.
Nope. 3.0 is; 3.5 was a new version.
-
Nope. 3.0 is; 3.5 was a new version.
I know blakey's going to argue. But 3.0 didn't come with a compiler, and 3.5 did.
Oh, wait, there were only 3 versions OF THE CLR. That's a pretty rules-lawyery distinction.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb822049(v=vs.110).aspx
Oh, but wait, he's still wrong, because that lists separate 1.0 and 1.1 CLR versions. That seems pretty definitive, even if you do want to claim 1.0 wasn't real or production-ready or whatever.
-
Oh, wait, there were only 3 versions OF THE CLR. That's a pretty rules-lawyery distinction.
Can we also discuss the versions of Debian vs Linux vs GNU/Linux? Or should we yell at blakey like when he tells people that DOM is not javascript?

How many major versions has java had, exactly?

How many major versions has java had, exactly?
I like to pretend there weren't any. I'd like to continue doing that, thanks.
-
How many major versions has java had, exactly?
Doesn't even matter, does it? The original thing here was just "versions installed."
@TimeBandit said:
Wait... why is there 4 version of .NET installed on my machine ?
4? There aren't even 4 versions of .NET in existence, as far as I am aware. (Are you counting Mono as one? Maybe?)It used to be super common have a ton of java versions installed at once.
-
Or should we yell at blakey like when he tells people that DOM is not javascript?
He might get jealous if you steal his schtick.
-
-
It used to be super common have a ton of java versions installed at once.
And now the common thing is to not have any installed since it's a huge security risk
-
Nope. 3.0 is; 3.5 was a new version.
From the very document you linked in the very next post:
but the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 include CLR 2.0. (There was no version 3 of the CLR.)
-
At least with .NET, all the versions can coexist. With Java you can only have one as your global java in your PATH variable. Fuck you if one app absolutely requires Java 1.6 and the other 1.7
-
The JAVA_HOME environment variable controls which instance of Java is run by java.exe in the system path (which is just a wrapper type thingy).
-
sudo update-alternatives --config java

Hold on, Flash just crashed again, brb.

Strange, I only get that on windows, when I've been watching the same twitch stream for more than an hour.

From the very document you linked in the very next post:
Hanzo'd. I figured that out. But like I said, there's still 4 versions of the CLR.
-

That's what $JAVA_HOME is for. Sure, you can only have one thing that you can call "java" from from the command-line without using a full path to it, but don't do that.
-
Strange, I only get that on windows, when I've been watching the same twitch stream for more than an hour.
Shhh, it doesn't crash, I'm just trying to give Windows users some comfort.

Hey, we have our own share of poorly written software that crashes. Software that usually isn't Windows itself, if that's what you were trying to imply.
Also, Discourse supports <small> but not <big>. Discoursistency!

Yeah, but Flash being shitty on Linux (which it still is, tbqh) is a familiar enough concept to be widely understood, so I went with that.
-

Full disclosure: I mainly watch twitch while messing around in wow at the same time on the same box. Not really on linux.

There be demons in this page. The layout kept jumping as I watched and Hey would get big for a moment and then small again. And I haven't even started drinking yet...

Hey, I have a variable named 泡$[x02]娖[x2F]能[U+FFEF]ó in this code, can you kindly do the needful.
