We searched Medline, Embase and Cochrane for the phrase bots are not funny

Maybe if it was a full-duplex model?
-
Only after I had to talk to the moderators about it
As far as I know I stopped doing it on my own.But they go out of their way to send spam messages?
My point there was that as long as you continue to present the asshole blakeyrant persona to the forum, nobody has any incentive to be nice to you, not the rest of what I didn't quote. You can do whatever you want with that. You trolled me epically last month, I'll give you points for that, but i'm not going to let you get under my skin again, so I am also trying to tone down my attitude towards you. If you want to keep being the forum's resident asshole, by all means, keep it up, but don't expect people to be nice to you.
-
Sending thousands of spam messages, ruining topics, etc. Those are actions. Actions cause real harm.
I did know spam could hit you in the head. Suppose it wasn't with a Cluebat.
-
-
Threads go off topic all the time. We cope.
Well, most of us do. The Blakester and Jeff obviously don't.
-
Time to get philosophical.
How can you be sure one of us isn't really a bot?
Like do we know this wasn't created by blakeybot impersonating blakey?
-
But Zoidberg really makes the thread more bearable
Are you really trying to get Accalia to kill the bots?
-
I agree with whatever @chubertdev said above.
Altho, really, "Fsck bots" should be SFW as a title.
-
In moderation they can be good. A zoidberg / mottbott bon mot can be just what the Dr ordered. But a wall of dice rolls is interesting to the person who asked and maybe the author of the bot.
Real people saying the same stuff over and over are annoying too ... no difference there
-
I hope this is an acceptable change.
If not, feel free to request me to revert it.
-
I don't like the bots either. I also don't like people changing titles and not following rules of my threads. And I already bitched about the toxic discourse-circlejerk that infects every thread eventually.
But what can you do? The forum is what it is. It's like any freedom: you can let go and not hold back, but also have to suffer other people doing the same. And in the end, I sort of prefer it that way.
That said, I would appreciate it if people exerted some self-control when asked nicely by fellow forum members. Not having moderation means "act like an adult who doesn't need a nanny", not "Yeehaaah! Water balloon fight everyone, like it or not!"

This.
-
Yeah, but again: we never had any of these problems until Discourse and the horde of people it brought in. This is new to me, and I'm still getting used to it.
-
Is the topic about to be Rosie'd?
-
But what can you do? The forum is what it is. It's like any freedom: you can let go and hold back less, but also have to suffer other people doing the same. And in the end, I sort of prefer it that way.

Moderation, in moderation, is a very good thing. That Lord of the Flies no-stupid-rules anything-goes libertarian paradise.. is a fantasy.
I highly suggest you guys make some basic polices and enforce them amongst yourselves -- ideally by appointing (or voting in) some more mods. I noticed a few extra people have shields lately..
-
ideally by appointing (or voting in) some more mods
@morbiuswilters should be a @moderator again!
-
don't mods have to be.... y'know..... active on the forum?
-
There was at one point a campaign to make him a mod (mostly done by him) while he was active here, @ben_lubar was just reviving it.
-
no one voted me a moderator.
rejected from the frontpage.
rejected from moderator.
maybe I should just kill myself in a swimming pool of semen. It's how I've always wanted to go.
-
that does sound like a pretty nice way to go, depending who provided the pool water.
-
i operate on a simple rule.
He (or she, or other) who wishes for power, who desires it, who lusts for it, who seeks it out.... THey are unworthy of it and should not be trusted with it.
it's served me well.
-
A blue whale?
-
I can't quit now for any reason because everybody would be like, "Blakeyrat rage quit again LOLOLOLOL let's do a pool on what he gets back LOLOLOLOLOL!" I have my dignity, damn it.
If you want to quit, then just quit. You can just turn off all notifications here and never worry about this forum again. We'd forget about you after a few weeks.
BTW, if you just silently leave, there probably won't be a big deal about it until people start noticing you're gone. And then it'll be along the lines of "Huh, wonder what happened to him. Oh well."
Please don't take this to mean I want you to quit. I'm just saying you shouldn't take the forum's reaction as an excuse to stay if you want to leave.
-
He (or she, or other) who wishes for power, who desires it, who lusts for it, who seeks it out.... They are unworthy of it and should not be trusted with it.
Which is why I am never to be put in a position of authority.
-
Oh fuck off. You don't know shit about shit.
-
-
Not a sperm whale?
<small>
Filed under: At risk of a whoosh
At that point, it would technically be both.
-
Not a sperm whale?
well if you get one of those to donate the sperm can you ask for some ambergris too? that shit is valuable!
-
That Lord of the Flies no-stupid-rules anything-goes libertarian paradise.. is a fantasy.
This cartoon annoys me because in the "real" libertarian world, the swimmers would be paying the lifeguard, so he would help them.
-
. I'm just saying you shouldn't take the forum's reaction as an excuse to stay if you want to leave.
Because, frankly, then the people who he's worried about LOLing own him.
-
Oh fuck off. You don't know shit about shit.
It would kill you to not be an asshole to him, wouldn't it. He's not wrong here. If @apapadimoulis came down and said "tone it down, guys" I don't think we're, collectively, enough of an asshole to not do that.
Ever since @arantor and a couple of others pointed out that you were getting to me, among other things, I have been trying not to needle you as much, but damn you make it hard for me to keep doing that, and it's all, all because your persona here is such a fucktard. If you pay attention you'll see that I don't treat anyone who's not actively arguing with me like that, but you bring out the @mikeTheLiar in me.
-
I also don't like people changing titles and not following rules of my threads.
Since you complained about people misusing your song of the day thread, people have been much better about it.
That's also why I created the companion comment thread.

Yes thank you for that. I sent around a few private messages, and people (mostly) complied. Blakerat, next time you should maybe try that before telling people to fuck off.
BTW, I'm out of the song thread at the moment because I don't have the time to listen to all the songs. As soon as I catch up, I'll be back to posting.
-

If posting without listening isn't allowed, then I've been Doing It Wrong™.

That's just my own rule, it's a bit too harsh (and unenforceable) to be official.
-
i listen to about 90% of the songs. never know when i'll find a new artist i like. :-D
-
I listen to anything that looks like I might like it. Given my taste in music, that's a rather small minority of songs posted there, but I have found things I like. If I had to listen to everything, I'm sure I wind up muting the topic pretty quickly.

Yes, we know that you love Babymetal.
-
Huh? That's a genre of music? TIL, I guess.
-
-
oooh. that's the XKCD for today we're referencing in the title.... whoever made that edit (i'm not looking either) well played.
-
I'm going to more or less echo the sentiment already expressed here that when bots are used with discretion, they can be amusing. When half a thread is just bots talking to each other, it's dumb. Most of their charm comes from novelty, and novelty wears off quickly.
I can accept losing a thread to organic topic drift. I have trouble accepting losing a thread to bots.
-

Mmm. There was a thread that started today, that started off interesting, but devolved right quick.
-
It was me.

on the old forum, people apparently had the power of human empathy-- that ability to know when they were being a dick to someone, and to realize, "hey, maybe I shouldn't be a dick to someone!"
Ok, I was originally going to post a pedantic and argumentative response to some of the stuff you've written here, but I tried to imagine how that would go down and I've decided to cut right to the chase: you are a real dick to the discourse staff, all the god damn time, and it's really been getting me down. I'm not trying to defend anyone here – they're adults, they can speak for themselves – I'm saying that I, personally, don't enjoy seeing people treat people that way. And while I'm on a roll, I wanted to respectfully bring up with @intercourse that I kind of cringe every time I see his avatar in the same thread as discourse staff, which, I realize, is the point but I just wanted to ask you to consider whether that might be a joke that you've taken far enough, long enough.
I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about who they are, here; what I'm trying to do is to illustrate a pretty obvious effect that is still quite easy to overlook: it is much easier to empathize with someone who is similar to yourself than someone who is different. So if you ever start feeling that there is a failure of empathy between yourself and another person, it's probably a better idea to start trying to build a bridge between your yourself and them than to accuse anyone of lacking a fundamental human quality.
-
So much material for a blakey bot eats popcorn
-
you are a real dick to the discourse staff, all the god damn time,
Yup.
they're adults, they can speak for themselves
You're saying Discourse developers aren't adults who can speak for themselves, and I'm the dick?
So if you ever start feeling that there is a failure of empathy between yourself and another person, it's probably a better idea to start trying to build a bridge between your yourself and them than to accuse anyone of lacking a fundamental human quality.
Better how? What do I gain from it? What would be the point, exactly?
As I've said many, many times, it's impossible for me to ever back the fundamental philosophy Discourse is based-on. Therefore, my only end-goal is for Discourse to go away. Which is:
- Impossible, as long as Alex runs this community and,
- kind of past-due anyway, since Discourse already killed-off the community I liked and replaced it with this crappy one.
Since I can't possibly achieve my goals, I might as well make myself laugh by calling those incompetent idiots incompetent idiots.
-

"I hate this place so I will do my best to make everyone miserable along with me."
You should consider taking your damn ball and going home. You're toxic.
-
You should consider taking your damn ball and going home. You're toxic.
And by "going home," I mean "quit the forum, even if gasp the people here will 'win' something."
Modern-day blakeyrat is a nearly-unredeemed asshole compared to that other account you used to post under. I'm not just saying that to be insulting. You might be--or maybe, for various reasons, you might not be--appalled if you re-read some of the older threads you participated in.
