But chiptunes aren't crap.
Chiptunes are awesome.
"Fake" chiptunes, where they say like, "this is a 8-bit song" but also use 46 simultaneous voices, suck ass. (People do that with 8-bit graphics, too. No, actual 8-bit graphics don't have a fucking ALPHA LAYER you HACK!)
-
Or use GXSCC or the "Ultimate MegaDrive Soundfont" and a midi file they found on the internet.
Unlike actual PSG/FM with occasional PCM samples.
-
This is the probably best piece of japanese OPM-based chiptune ever made:

Right the sexualized female character looks like she's only 10, but she's really a witch who's 600 years old, so it's ok.

It's really the tentacled monster that's 17 years old. Misandry in anime is horrible.
-
I found the track somewhere else originally.
I later on found out that it was also released on that album.
That cover looks like something out of the newer touhou games. Yuck.
-
Aha! Yes, I have.
I've dealt with your type enough to know how to rephrase the question.

I've dealt with your type enough to know how to rephrase the question.
Sorry, I thought I was helping you with the joke. :burka:
-
Oh, I know what you were doing. But one thing TDWTF does is teach you how to parse stuff to do the best you can to foil pendantry.
Unless you're dealing with @blakeyrat who's kind of like the Kool-Aid guy with that.
-
But one thing TDWTF does is teach you how to parse stuff to do the best you can to foil pendantry.
Sounds like a really cheap pendant.
-
Oh no you don't. I said "do the best you can." Thank you for demonstrating why I added that.

@FrostCat said:
Have you seen a picture captioned something to the effect of "this is a Saudi woman?"
Aha! Yes, I have.
Wasn't this one was it?

-
Ha. That wasn't the one I meant, but without the caption it conveys the information I was trying to get across.

I haven't played Portal 2 yet. Does this song spoil anything?

Have you tried pressing the or button?

I don't get how women can be fans of Japan
Good food, a language where pronunciation makes sense, and voice actors who have some fucking pride in their goddamn work. (Though American voice actors are improving!) I'd never want to live in Japan, it's kind of awful, but it was really fun as a tourist destination.
-
Good food,
If Iron Chef has taught me anything, it's that Japanese people will put any damn thing in their mouth and call it food.
-
If

I had some great food in England, to show you how low my standards are XD
-
Sriracha is good, but only on certain things. It's really important to match the hot sauce with the food. More so than with wine, IMHO.
-
I literally cannot taste the flavor of Siracha, for the same reason I can't appreciate how soft someone's skin is while they're punching me in the face. All I get is searing pain on my tongue. And yet, there've been weeks where EVERY FOOD TRUCK has Siracha on all their foods. Blech.

An examination of European cuisine instructs us that poor nations will eat snails, frogs, sea slugs, fish eggs, etc. and call it 'cuisine'. At best, they might try to get creative with pasta and tomato sauce.
Rich nations, on the other hand, eat meat.
-

Some people are more sensitive than others. Most people need to work up to spicier foods.
And yet, there've been weeks where EVERY FOOD TRUCK has Siracha on all their foods.
Hot sauce bandwaggoning. What a terrible thing. Sriracha is decent on asian cuisine, though sometimes you need something simpler and spicier, like sambal. On mac and cheese, there is nothing better than Tabasco. On Mexican, either El Yucateo (if you think Sriracha is too hot, stay well clear of this stuff) or Tapatío (Cholula is good but overpriced). On wings, it's hard to beat Franks Hot Buffalo.
-
I'm one of those supertasters or whatever, so everything's a few notches spicier for me. I can barely handle red pepper, and jalapenos are right out for me. Between that and being utterly disgusted by cheese, I sometimes have trouble finding things to eat in American cuisine :/
-
I've really never thought of jalapeños as that hot. There are plenty of spicier chillis/peppers easily available. jalapeños taste more like the vinegar they're pickled in IME
-
A small chunk of jalepeno will be a burst of pain on my tongue :( Again, I can't taste it.
In fact, there's something in this (mild) sausage I'm having for breakfast that's doing the same thing. Probably a bit of red pepper? I can't see what it is, all I see is fennel, so it's hard to tell.
I do like banana peppers, pickled. Sometimes they're a bit much, but usually I can tolerate them
-
My son eats nothing without hotsauce, and generally thinks hotter is better.
But, in elementary (or in his case alimentary) school he had already discovered that sometimes hotter has less flavor. So the Siracha sits on the shelf, lonely.
Woot! and +1 for him.
Chez IJIJ we prefer "Texas Pete's" and "Frank and Ed's" [which I think we find at the $ store]. More full bodied than straight Tabasco.

I'm in the same boat here. On the other hand, I consume garlic at a rate that would make Dracula spit my blood back out and run away on the first nibble... ;)
-
Roasted garlic is like, the best food nature ever produced.
-
TRWTF is that image. It's like Star Wars, only instead of a Death Star it's a woman's rear and instead of Alderaan it's some kind of strange blue orb floating on top of the water.
I was ready to comment on how that video wasn't playing..
-
Roasted garlic is like, the best food nature ever produced.
I'm not sure about that. There's chocolate too! Needs more extensive testing…
-
and voice actors who have some fucking pride in their goddamn work.
First of all, Billy West is gonna come over here and club you in the face, because how fucking disrespectful. Billy West, Casey Kasem, the fucking LEGEND that is Mel Blanc. You are so incredibly wrong my brain is exploding.
Secondly, even if it were true, you're excusing massive, institutional racism and sexism due to the quality of their voice actors. Did you know if you're not Japanese, you can't buy property? But that's ok! Because voice acting!
-

They're a lot LESS hot if you pickle them. Try them fresh.
-
Did you know if you're not Japanese, you can't buy property?
That's hardly specific to Japan.
-
you're excusing massive, institutional racism and sexism
No I'm not, I'm listing a few good points. I already said, Japan is an awful place to live. Learn 2 read. My intention was that by pointing out that I can only list about 3 good things that came out of Japan, it would serve as a damning of the rest of the culuture by faint praise, but apparently I didn't pull it off. Notice how you can get all three things without ever setting foot in Japan? Yeah.
Casey Kasem and Mel Blanc are both awesome! You know what else they are? Dead. Have you watched anything animated from America that came out this decade? Long-runners seem to care, new shows act like voice acting was invented yesterday.
-

... and?
Are you suggesting that not being unique to Japan makes it just or right? Or...?
-
so non song posts invaded the song thread.... should i flag them off topic?
like this post for yes, flag for inappropriate if no.
-

Maybe. I concede I can't judge the quality of Japanese voice acting because I don't speak Japanese. (I can say all their women are fucking shrill as shit, Jesus, take it down an octave, woman!) I also lack the cultural knowledge to know whether "shrill as shit" is considered "good voice acting" in Japan.
You should actually read Billy West's shit, he was complaining about this a few years back-- not just poor casting of voice talent, but the casting of non-voice actors just to get their names on the movie posters. (Which, and full credit to Disney here, pretty much every non-Disney animation studio does.)
The second point's not going to change. I can guarantee half of Over The Hedge's viewers were there to hear Bruce Willis. It's simple economics. None of the Disney or Pixar voice acting stable can bring in those kinds of numbers. (And it's not like Disney is entirely innocent, they just failed at it by picking actors with near-zero audience pull, like Michael J Fox and Roseanne.)
As far as TV animated series goes, well, since Simpsons, Family Guy and to a lesser extent South Park are hugely popular while putting basically zero effort into writing, plotting, or voice acting-- there's hardly any incentive there to change. (And South Park's is lousy as a stylistic choice, in any case.)
I love me some H. Jon Benjamin, but his burger chef is doing an impersonation of lothario spy who is doing an impersonation of a middle school janitor who's doing an impersonation of Dr. Katz' son. Guy's funny, but he ain't no actor in the sense of having different characters.
-
I get what you're saying, but - frankly - you just may be getting a bit too worked up about it.
One, I don't see what the nature of Japanese society has to do with our appreciation of their cultural/technological output (or lack thereof). I certainly don't see anyone "excusing" anything. To go full Godwin: Hitler gave us the VW beetle. Does that mean that anyone who drove a beetle back in the day "excused" Nazism? Nah, that would be silly.
Two, as institutional sexism and nationalism (that's the word you're looking for) goes, Japan seems pretty softcore. I've lived in worse places, as that goes and even that wasn't actually terrible.
Three, be careful when making blanket pronouncements about foreign cultures, 'coz as far as I'm concerned, you come from pointy-haired land.
Four, WWII has been over for a while.
-
Are you suggesting that not being unique to Japan makes it just or right?
Yes, that's what I'm doing, you dumb shit[1].

-
Simpsons, Family Guy and to a lesser extent South Park
I've got about 0 interest in any of those shows, but even I'll admit that they all take pride in their craftwork.
women are fucking shrill as shit
Very common and super fucking annoying in a lot of genres of anime. Not the kind of thing I'm into either.
I'd love to watch shows dubbed, but in order to get any semblance of emotional content whatsoever, I have to watch them subtitled. I'm lucky if they pronounce sentences like sentences and not like weird collections of strange words in many dub jobs, and inappropriate or missing emotional content is rampant. It just doesn't work for me if someone's struggling to confess their love in a perfect monotone while crying.
nationalism
Japan is also racist, particularly against the Chinese. But yes, nationalist as well.
should actually read Billy West's shit
Does he have a blog I can follow or are we talking about books I can go buy? I love to read stuff from insiders.
-
To go full Godwin: Hitler gave us the VW beetle.
That's not true.
Hitler had the VW Beetle designed, and a few pre-production models built. Then he started a "pre-installment" plan promising citizens that if they paid a monthly fee, they'd get a Beetle as soon as one was available. Then he stopped production of the car and funneled all the money into the military (but kept the installment plan going with zero intention of ever supplying cars), cheating his own citizens out of their money.
Of all the dastardly things he did, this one is almost completely forgotten.
Three, be careful when making blanket pronouncements about foreign cultures, 'coz as far as I'm concerned, you come from pointy-haired land.
What does that even mean?
Four, WWII has been over for a while.
Well that doesn't matter, because if you read a Japanese textbook you'll soon learn that Japan did absolutely nothing unethical during the war.
-

Whaaaaa? You had me tricked with the whole "voice acting is bad" and now you've changed to a completely different argument.
Yeah, dubs are awful. Know why? They pay like fucking $10/hour. They're cheap as shit. They can't afford voice actors, they're using dudes they found out by the dumpsters. (With a few exceptions, like the ones Disney did.)
-
I'd love to watch shows dubbed, but in order to get any semblance of emotional content whatsoever, I have to watch them subtitled.
For some reason, you should more less always do subs not dubs. I don't know what the deal is but they're apparently two separate translations. There's a funny bit in the beginning of Ghost in the Shell, where Kusanagi's jumping off a building, and someone says her heart rate is up or her biological signs are off or wahtever, and the dub says something lame, but the subtitles have her saying something like "it must be that time of the month."
Ok, so maybe it's not so much funny as maybe clever or just surprising enough you snicker the first time, but the effect is better than the subtitled line.
I've heard a guy who actually does subtitling say you should always prefer those, fwiw.
-
-
Oh, I was meandering into a slightly different topic. Voice acting and dubs are both terrible. Oh! And fandubs. And voice acting on Youtube skits. Lots of things are awful.
-
Does he have a blog I can follow or are we talking about books I can go buy? I love to read stuff from insiders.
I don't know. He went on a lot of talk shows and stuff talking about it a few years ago, you can probably find interview transcripts. He might have been promoting a book, but frankly I don't remember.
