I just added that to the video description.
Unhack's game bit is approximately 400,000 times more entertaining than the dumb Elevator Action stealth game in this piece of crap. They actually made this game AFTER Unhack and it's somehow worse. Huh.
The reviews on Steam are kind of amazing. I didn't play this far, but apparently at some point the main character just starts talking about God constantly.

Quick survey for anybody who watches my videos--
Do you think the volume level I use is:
- Too quiet?
- Just right?
- Too loud?
I use the super-scientific method of using Audacity to "normalize" the tracks, then boosting my void to +5 dB in Vegas. It sounds fine on my own machine through VLC but compared to other YouTube videos, it seems like mine are quieter than most. To me at least.
-
@blakeyrat Volume sounds fine to me.
-
@loopback0 I really wish YouTube would either provide some guidance on how to volume your videos, or add a "normalize" of their own to ensure videos are all the same volume.
-
I don't like how the audio levels change constantly throughout your videos. It seems like you have it so that when you talk, it quickly makes the game quieter and then slowly makes it louder again when you are silent, but that's really distracting to me. I'd be okay with the game quieter than your voice at all times, which is what I think most people do.
As for the actual volume level itself, I think it's fine - but better to be too loud than too quiet. The only real way to be too loud is to chop off the tops of the sound waves, and as long as you are not doing that, you should be fine.
Your most recent video is perfect volume-wise (at least for your voice)

I don't know. If the game was always quiet it would be more jarring when he starts commentating again. The effect is worse when the not-commentating sections are a bit farther between.

That's called ducking. The idea is that while I'm talking, the stuff I'm saying should be front-and-center and the other stuff should fade into the background. It's pretty normal, even most TV shows and such do it, but maybe I have it set too high-- I have it set to duck the other app to 33% normal volume. Or I could set it to duck slower, right now it's only set to 50 ms on the theory I want it out of my way quickly. Maybe 500 ms would work better.
(And to be a snooty jerk: the reason most people have the game audio at a lower but constant volume is because ducking in real time requires a few iotas of technical sophistication most people doing streams don't have.)
Does anybody else find the ducking distracting?
@LB_ said in 📹 Blakeyrat's Videos Thread (Robots in the News et al.):

That's what I do with the FRAPS-recorded stuff. But in that case I have game and voice audio in two different channels, which makes it a heck of a lot easier to mix.
Getting voice and game recorded on two channels (using streaming software) but transmitted as a single mixed channel is... unreasonably difficult in Windows' sound system and/or available streaming software. (Which is a shame-- the MP4/FLV file formats certainly support having more than one audio stream with mixing done on the playback client, but barely any software can actually write the files that way. And Twitch.TV/Hitbox.TV would probably choke on it if they did.)
(How do I draw a slash that isn't interpreted as part of the URL? Escaping it with a backslash did nothing. How come every goddamned simple thing in Markdown is virtually impossible? Jesus. People LIKE this markup language? Fucking morons.)

Off topic, but I think you might get away with a zero-width join html-entity thing like so: Twitch.tv/Hitbox.tv It should break out the pattern enough that neither gets recognized as a link (if that was your intent).

I never really noticed it too much.
-
Guess I'm the only one super distracted by it. Okay, no need to optimize the viewing experience of one guy when nobody else cares.
EDIT: In case it isn't clear, I'm not being sarcastic nor am I upset, I literally mean what I said above. It's fine ;p
-
@LB_ Here's the deal:
You need to hear me when I talk, but when a game like System Shock 2 is playing a voice log, you need to hear that clearly, too. I don't know any other way of accomplishing that without ducking.
But thanks for the feedback anyway.

No my intent isn't to type "zero width HTML entity I am mega-nerd, you must be mega-nerd to use Markdown fuck those normies". How about a fucking "link" button in the toolbar and I could select the slash and hit the "link" button and click "unlink" or whatever?
But that would make it way too easy to get the text in the post the way I want it. Much better to keep a lookup page of HTML entities around all the fucking time because some stupid motherfuckers out there think Markdown isn't ass.

Apparently that's too difficult for modern-day users, so the software has to guess what a link should be for you.

I'm no sound engineer, but...
It might help to adjust the volume of the game's recording only on the part of the frequency spectrum where your voice sits.
Trying applying an EQ filter with a dimple between... I don't know, 8 Hz and 10kHz?
I don't know whether that's what ducking is actually doing, by the way. But I suspect it's lowering the volume of the whole thing.
In any case, I'm fine with the sound on your videos.

If you like watching me stumbling around an endless maze of chemical tanks while the game's lighting is fucked beyond belief, you'll probably still hate this video. And game.
This is a FULL PLAYTHROUGH. BTW. 100% completion. Skip to 40:20 for the best bit.
Of all the dumb details of this dumb-ass game, I love how the protagonist just drives away in his broken down jeep at the end of the game. With zero commentary or explanation on why it's suddenly no longer broken-down.

A terrible indie game in Source? That's a first. I know Source is cheap in theory, but you don't really see indie devs jumping on it despite that.

With good reason. Their source is full of "I don't remember what this is for" comments and just makes people angry.

About 98% of the development effort of "Game Type" went into creating a really lame spoof of the Xbox dashboard, maybe 2% went into putting an actual video game in it.

OMG that looks like something a child would make in Game Maker, using random assets from the default library.
