Interview with an Ex-Microsoftie (Topic #2006)
-
Through a bit of brilliant reasoning, I came to conclusion that the next topic will be no. 2000 on the new forums. At first I was thinking of opening a stupid meta topic, which would predictably turn into another discourse bitch fest. But then I remembered a funny blog post I read today and thought better of it.
Interview with an Ex-Microsoftie
Basically, the guy is making fun of Microsoft's horrendous naming conventions.—Yes. I did such a good job naming it System32, that nowadays it contains all the 64 bit files as well.
—Then what happens to the 32 bit version of the 64 bit files. Where do they go?
—Well they can't go in System32, because on a 64 bit machine, System32 is where the 64 bit files go. So if we're running a 32 bit executable we lie to the executable and tell it that "System32" points at another folder, called SysWOW64 and that's where we stick the 32 bit files.
—Why is there a 'WOW' in the middle of the name?
—I was typing System64 and half way through I just thought: "WOW, nature is beautiful!"
EDIT
Well shit, that sucks. It skipped over 2000 for some reason.
I guess there's no chance of this not going meta now :-)

-
Looks like it skips over some posts when assigning ID-s. Maybe when people open editor and then don't post anything, or something.
-
Compare:
-
No access for 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005...
-
Maybe they're staff forum topics, maybe they're PM threads, maybe they're in that rubbish forum that @PaulaBean posts to for no reason.
@PJH which one is it?
-
2004 and 2005 are PMs sent to me.
-
AHAHA
PMs even contribute to the topic enumeration.
That's hilarious.
-
There are fewer bugs because of it. Otherwise, we'd have a full set of PM bugs and a full set of forum bugs that are separate. This way, we don't need to test PMs the way we test the forum.
-
This way, we don't need to test PMs the way we test the forum.
By using the word "we" you put yourself in the extremely dangerous position of representing Discourse. Reconsider.

AHAHA
PMs even contribute to the topic enumeration.
That's hilarious. That's because PMs are topics. With suitable powers you can merge PMs. You can move them between things. You can like PMs too.
@ben_lubar: On the flipside you also get bugs if you're not careful because of unexpected behaviour from topics being PMs.

We test the software, then Jeff gets mad at us for reporting bugs.
-
Or denies they exist, or were by design.
-
2000 was a PM from me to @boomzilla about how the Dodgers suck
-
If we get to 2014, we should stop until next year and just post in the likes thread.
-
-
it's a PM I sent to @faoileag.
Filed Under: I sniped the number 2000 | Does anybody want to be intivted to it? | Do I get a badge for sniping the number secretly?

So now two people have claimed 2000 was a PM, and both claim it's a different conversation.
Neither of you are called Spartacus. FAIL.
-
For some reason you seem to think that impossible.
Let me remind you, we are using Discourse.
Filed Under: How do I move PMs into public domain to tighten my claim on the legendary 2000 | The invitation for an invite is still standing for all you nonbelievers

It should be impossible that two things have the same id but This. Is. Discourse..........
-
-
How do I move PMs into public domain to tighten my claim on the legendary 2000
I can move PMs to public topics, but I don't think I can make topic 2000 itself public.
-
Do you guys have nothing better to do on a Sunday?
Filled under: and on the seventh day he finished his work that he had done, and he lurked
-
Do you guys have nothing better to do on a Sunday?
Well, I guess we could just watch other people post stuff...
-
So... how about them Windows directory names. Crazy, huh?
-
The Dodgers suck PMs were actually ten other IDs.
-
Well, I guess we could just watch other people post stuff...
Yeah, imagine if everyone did that...
-
So... how about
them Windows directory names. Crazy, huh?we get this thing back on topic?

What do you think this is? meta.d?
First it's re-railing topics. Then it's being civilised. Next thing we'll all be replaced with robots and only @blakeyrat will be immune because no robot has ever been built that can handle... that.
-
-
it's a PM I sent to @faoileag.
Filed Under: I sniped the number 2000All we know is that at least one of them is lying.
Expert witness say @Kuro is not lying.
-
There should probably be a re-railing badge
I think it was actually suggested. CBA to look for it though. Feel free to peruse the
searchDiscourse Random Topic Generator if so inclined.

OP reminds me of this:

There should be a user script to rename it that.

I couldn't rule it out. But maybe @faoileag is lying, eh?

Only the expert witness nows the topic of a pm.
Unless he's making it up.
-
As any fule kno, the title in the URL is largely ignorable in DC.
Interestingly it doesn't redirect to the real URL before deciding it can't do it.

Interestingly, the two error messages are indeed the same.
-
I can't open the topic anymore, either.
Maybe @PJH can bring some light into this matter.
Filed Under: Discourse is the best at what it's doing. It's just that nobody knows what the hell that is
Addendum: Created a Bug-report for this.

2000? WORKSFORME. What error are you getting?
-
I put pictures in that bug report
Filed Under: now with 100% more pictures!

-
2000? WORKSFORME. What error are you getting?
The error is that neither @Kuro, initiator the the private message, nor @faoileag, the recipient of said private message, are able to view said private message any more.
-
If you can't open it either, it's now private to admins, I guess.... they are the bank to our messages. Hope we don't have to pay for service.
Filed Under: More than half of this message should have been the filed under... oh well

Better yet, why don't we go all the way and also use topics to track bugs? That way, we won't need to test the bug tracker the way we test the forum/PMs!
-

AFAIK Ben's always been part of the "pro" Discourse faction.

I like that satire.

If only there were a button for this purpose...
The heart button is not nearly adequate.
