Find a public park and walk there. Force yourself to do a mile a day until you can do it consistently without stopping. I recommend the hour before sunset. Then move up to an hour a day. Once you can do that, then it's time to get a gym membership.
When it's not 112 degrees outside in the evening, that's what I do with my mom tuesdays and thursdays. We've switched to the gym pool thing for the time being. I can complete about four laps in fifteen minutes or so.

If you have the space, buy a cheap Windows Mixed Reality headset and Beatsaber. Set it up for third party tracks and go nuts in No Fail mode.
I have a Rift and do (did) AudioShield. I can usually do about four songs before I collapse.

Status: eBay, your user interfaces are just the worst.
Decided as my cheap-ish 3M half-face respirator just broke I'd treat myself to a professional full-face Dräger one.
Found a really nice NOS one I can afford on eBay, description explicitly says they ship internationally so I go buy and:
No problem, it's obviously an oversight so I'll just click Contact, Shipping:
Ok, Contact the seller it is then. I'll just click that and...
Oh for the love of...

@tsaukpaetra Also, having Fitbit and a food tracker app (MyFitnessPal or similar. The one built into the Fitbit app is shite) guilt you with as many notifications as possible is helpful IME.

food tracker app
I could probably backtrack that for about a year or so, I have all my receipts from lunch, breakfast is typically a bowl of cereal, dinner is whatever.

status playing mobile games waiting to Gimp and all its dependencies (which are many) to compile on an ancient MacBook Pro, because there are no recent binary releases. Sigh. About an hour now.
-
@benjamin-hall Update: 1.5 hours total. Worst part is I'm going to be switching laptops in a month or so (and getting a iMac, all school-issue), so I'll have to do it all over again, plus all the other things I need to do my job. Won't be fun, even though all my data's in Google Drive.

@benjamin-hall said in The Official Status Thread:

Can you not transfer the binaries? Or is it having to set up XCode and all that junk to let you have your developer signing certificate et al?

@tsaukpaetra not sure. I don't know if I'll have both machines at the same time. I used MacPorts, so it was simple but long.

Your fat. Fix that by eating and moving a bunch.
That's part of it. You should definitely do that. (BTW, he probably said “eating less” or maybe “eating less calories” or “eating less sugar” or “eating less carbohydrates”.) Yet the “moving a bunch” is also important; you want to both increase calorie output and decrease calorie input. Note that any changes here should be gradual, but definite. And stop snacking; snacks are Bad.
There are drugs too, some of which are pretty cheap as they're off patent (provided your body tolerates them). They are not a substitute for the “lifestyle changes”, but they help.
Minor nitpick: Moving / doing sports helps less with losing weight than you might think. It's important to do sports for health reasons. But in order to lose weight - not so much.
Changing dietary habits will have the deciding impact.

I'm amazed how most people choose to understimate this part when trying to gain/lose weight.

@rhywden OTOH with a "typical" nerd sedentary lifestyle, base metabolic rate is so low that anything but the most extreme diet won't make a difference on it's own. That first step into nominal exercise is positively essential.
-
@benjamin-hall Thank you.

The base metabolic rate doesn't change that much.

@rhywden sounds like you need more exercise

Status: 139/90, 112bpm. Finished exercise, replacing dishes and completing pot and pan dishwashing. Time taken: 32 minutes.

@tsaukpaetra What the fecking hell is your resting HR?
-
As of <whatever update I've gotten recently>, if I turn Bluetooth off, my machine BSODs.
Microsoft is going down the shitter with these rapid releases.
Edit: The Bluetooth stack also seems to get into a stuck state wherein a device shows Connected even though it's off; at that point I can't disconnect and I can't remove/unpair the device (through Device Manager, even). Fuck this stupid shit. I'll just use my phone rather than my computer.

@weng said in The Official Status Thread:

Less than that? I'll read when I've not done anything for ten minutes, which should be in... five hours.

I can happily report that after vegging for two hours, I measured 128/87, 65 bpm.

Then much of your problems are probably just chronic stress.

Maybe. Probably not though, I'm basically this (fingers distanced three inches apart) close to being asleep and essentially motionless. I have no idea if this is typical, I carefully engineered my situation do to this test.
How idle is idle?

I bought a thing on Amazon yesterday night (technically today) at 0:40, with standard 1-day shipping (so estimated delivery: tomorrow).
It arrived today morning before 10 AM. WTF Amazon, that's way too fast. It was almost creepy.

Also status:
I had an old VGA LCD display. It had been malfunctioning for a while: the darker parts of the image would show a weird "noise". However the noise would almost disappear if you hit or moved the screen just right. So it was clearly a bad connector somewhere.
Since I'm a frugal kind of person, I thought I'd open it up and see if I could fix it by reseating some cables.
My god, compared to the laptops and stuff I've taken apart before, this thing was an absolute pleasure. I mean, it has proper screws! No glue (almost), no one-way snap-fit plastics, no ultra-flimsy screws or screw holes designed to break as soon as you touch them. All cables use connectors so you can take them apart, all the screws are placed in accessible places.
The problem instantly vanished after opening it. It works like a charm now. But I know it will return as soon as I finish putting it back together.

Could be as simple as a connector working loose in that case.
-
@dkf Yeah I just managed to find the culprit connector. The cable was originally held in place with some tape, but it lost its adhesive and came loose, which would push the connector away when it moved.
I also discovered the board has the holes for a DVI connector. I wonder if it would work if I soldered one there? Not likely, but definitely possible.

I'm working from home today.
Freshly made coffee (okay, the coffee at the office is pretty good too)
Windows that can be opened whenever I want, without automatic sun shades fucking around 30 times a day
A proper internet connection (FttH!)
Not being in a hen house all fucking day long
SimCity 3000 sound track playing in the backgroundWhat's not to like? :D
-
@anonymous234 McMaster Carr (an industrial parts supplier) also has creepy shipping. I've ordered things at 3am and had them delivered by noon... From 3 states away. I don't know that I could drive there that fast.

Half tempted to just say "Screw the current issues, I'm going to bed" and go home.

Also, if you think RAM prices are too damn high, you haven't seen graphics cards.

Probably not, check for missing chips that the traces don't go to.
