I'm actually enjoying my two weeks of freedom from my students (and they of me, of course!).
The weather is weird: Last week until yesterday had sub-zero temperatures and everything covered in snow.
Today everything's green and like: "Snow? What snow! Dunno what you're talking about!"

We're on Spring Break (10 days of freedom) at the end of this week, but my comments for mid-semester are due tomorrow. Today's a writing day, and I foolishly left all my comments until today.
As far as the weather, starting yesterday it got chilly (65 F). It's been in the 80s for weeks now. The rest of the east coast is being hit with an arctic blast, so I'm not complaining.

I understand why the deadlines are the way they are...we have to have time before Spring Break to proofread and fix any last issues. Still find the whole thing pretty useless. Not as bad as writing comments for the graduating seniors at the end of the year--at that point there's nothing that can (or will) be done. They're gone. Go away.

We had a major WTF last year regarding presents - pretty much anyone working is subject to rules regarding presents, right? I mean, it makes sense to combat corruption and stuff (in fact, my own physics teacher was offered a Mercedes once if he let a pupil pass his exam).
For example, we German teachers are not allowed to accept presents worth more than 10€.So, we had this graduation class who, after receiving their diplomas, presented a bust of Loriot (a famous German comedian (yes, those exist. Some actually manage to escape the salt mines)) to their mentor. Everyone had given 10€ only, so they thought they'd get away with it.
Of course not. Reason the judge handed down: They could've tried to influence their grades.
Not sure how they were supposed to do that after graduation.
-
@rhywden that's a for sure. We don't have rules for gifts, more like guidelines. Anything under $25 is usually fine, anything major needs approval. That's the benefit of working at a private school--flexibility.
Our graduating classes traditionally give a class gift to the school as a whole--they raise money and pay for a "thing" (depending on the year--we've gotten fancy water fountains, decorative elements, etc). But that's to the whole school, not to any teacher individually.

Status: My work laptop installed the Fall Creators Update, and our stupid vpn software started blocking all access to my network driver. The IT guy said uninstalling that should work, and it did. BUT: Something is still very wrong. The Windows Firewall Service (Not Windows Firewall itself, which our company does not use) is not only disabled as usual, it's fully GONE from services.msc. This means Powershell doesn't quite work right.

Status: Finally unpacked that gift from LEGO Education from the teacher's faire two weeks ago.
It's supposed to be a small vehicle you can use for various mechanical problems in physics. The manual shows, in usual LEGO style, how to assemble the undercarriage.
And from there jumps right to the completed product, never showing how to actually assemble the most complicated part (the engine).
Guys, this is not how you convince me to buy your products!

Sounds like something went wrong with binding and pages were left out of the middle section.
Is there an online version of the manual?

The manual is only a leaflet. And no, of course there's no online manual. Only for the included "teacher's instructions" which actually aren't teacher's instructions but pupil's instructions.
Proper teacher's instructions always include an analysis where/when to use the material, some more background information on the concepts involved and hints on what else you can use the material for.
Another mark against them, I guess.I mean, I can do those "teacher's instructions" myself, no problem. But then I hardly need them if I have to do it all on my own, don't I?

Status: New router get!
Decided to finally replace my aging Cisco/Linksys router with an Amplifi HD. Setup was fairly easy, and using the same network name meant that the various devices all just reconnected to it fine enough. Only real thing I didn't remember to capture off-hand was my port forwards, which I didn't really use many of at the moment anyway, so if I really need them I'll just recreate them then.

You should work from home instead of working from rollercoaster.

Molly's started to figure out she can press squares on the iPad to make other videos come up. Which has dipped our toes into the very shallow waters of the deep cesspool that is YouTube Kids. Nothing bad so far, but the Finger Family songs start to get Uncanny Valley Eat Your Soul really fast.
Though as creepy as seeing people with tiny versions of themselves on their fingers are-- it doesn't top the mental image I got tonight. Molly was listening to a Finger Family song as I made dinner. But this one included, like, fifty verses all along the family tree.
If you aren't familiar with Finger Family songs, it tends to be a silly song like "Father finger, Father finger, where are you? Here I am, Here I am, how are you?"-- and the character on screen holds up one finger. Sometimes there's a finger puppet on that finger. It then enumerates through a
cis-het normative oppression unitstandard family most kids recognize-- Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, Baby. Five members, five fingers. And that image has been ingrained in my brain (ingrained in the membrane). So as this song went on and on, adding more and more family members (cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, grandparents)-- my brain automagically mentally added more and more fingers-- until all I could picture was this star-dammned Eldritch horror with an infinite-expanse of slithering tentacles coming out of a hand that once looked human, each appendage engraved with the screaming face of family members long dead, each of them beckoning you to surrender to the inevitable.
...
YouTube Kids.

Strangely enough, VR rollercoasters just aren't the same...
I decided to play it safe in any case. Performance was tanking quickly enough that being out at work was decidedly worse than being at home.
I can drive with only 12 percent nominal mental facilities, but that's if I'm stable and this certainly was not the case.

@lorne-kates when I become a parent, I'll only play them traditional kids TV channels, and only show YouTube when they're old enough to be weirded out by it.

They are… if you've got a motion pod to simulate the accelerations on the body. That's not exactly home kit, of course.

I have more sophisticated sensory nodes enough that anything less than a six-axis gyroscopic unbounded suspension setup won't fool me for very long. Especially if I don't disable skin-touch....

It doesn't have to do it for very long; a rollercoaster ride is over pretty quickly. Also, these pods come with plenty of other things to fool the senses; it's your senses of orientation and acceleration that are hard to fool and which need the funky hardware. This (↓) is a low-rent version. The better ones are fully enclosed and also have hydraulics a bit like you get on full flight simulators. (Also, you can fit a whole small group in one at once, for all that extra “shared fun” dynamic.)

Status: Bought a FlashAir card. Basically, it's an SDcard with WiFi on it. This allows me to update the files on my 3D Printer without the rigmarole of "Pull card out of 3D printer" => "Insert into card reader on PC" => "Write to card, remember to eject safely" => "Go back to 3D printer in other room and reinsert."
Alternatives would have been:
- Connect laptop over USB (with multi-hour prints, that's a bit of a non-starter)
- Raspberry Pi Zero as a controller hub - that one's connected through a (slow) serial port, though, which does not play nice with the Linear Advance feature of the printer.
-
@rhywden that sounds like a wonderful idea! I wonder if they added a reinsert command to it though. Most devices cache the FAT and therefore don't recognize modifications to the card unless you eject and replace the card...
-
@tsaukpaetra It seems it's more of an issue that the printer doesn't rescan the card periodically. If I mount the card in Windows any modifications over WiFi show up instantly.
-

That's.... Almost exactly as I said. Did I phrase it incorrectly?
-
@tsaukpaetra @Rhywden's printer might detect card through other means than whether there's current on connectors, in which case power-cycling might not be enough to trigger rescan.
-
