@AyGeePlus Just mucking about with some 3D stuff and SDL 2.0.
Trying to work out how this http://gafferongames.com/game-physics/fix-your-timestep/, works with a standard game loop. The integration, derivative stuff is kinda making it a little confusing, but I think I got the idea now.

It's probably because the person setting things up just didn't think of opening up the config ability to anyone else.
no, that one's enabled by default. you have to explicitly restrict it.
-
@accalia Oh, so whoever is running that project on Slack is semi-malicious in their incompetence. I can believe it…

how often do you wish to delete your posts?
how often do you want to delete your OP and have it delete the entire discussion happening in the topic?
because if the answers aren't "Rarely", and "almost never" then i need to update my lists of known alts for "He who must delete"

Usually only when network problems or cooties cause a double-post.

Just suspend him until 2243.

can we just revoke non mod+ users permissions to delete things full stop?
From my reading of the current state of the config, it shouldn't have been able to have been deleted by the OP. Currently testing it.
I've restored the thread BTW.

I just deleted a post two days ago.

So far, never, because I wouldn't want all y'all to miss out on my wit.

Banning shit because a vanishingly-small number of people abuse it is not cool. How often it's legitimately used isn't relevant: the fact that it is, is.
If one person's egregiously abusing something, and nobody else is abusing it at all, then the solution is to either take away that power from that one person, if possible, or to ban the person if not.
-
@accalia
I'm for the removal of the OP's right to outright delete the thread. That's just a silly thing NodeBB does. It removes content not owned by the user.

what's wrong with teh modulus operator?
Nothing, when it is applied to integers. When it is applied to strings though…
-
@HardwareGeek said in The Official Status Thread:
Example from the code I was grousing about.
print "writing DS as %s and EXP as %s to %s" % (dataSet.getDataSetCode() , experiment.getPermId() , filename)
When applied to a string,
%
is a format application operator. Because doing something that complicated via an operator makes total sense.

banning people seems to be a thing that the admins of this site have decided is not a thing they do (and fair enough to that)
so banning the offender is both out and disproportionate response.
Confronting the offender and asking them to stop has resulted in.... well a tantrum and no change in behavior.
I have seen no moderation interaction with the offender to date, although i have no access to private communications channels so it's possible they've tried and failed to modify the behavior.
we are left with changing permissions. if the offender kept to one account then yes removing their permissions would suffice, but they do not. i know of at least five confirmed alts the offender has used in the last two weeks, and i suspect he has more. so single user permission editing is out.
what are we left with to modify the behavior then?
either a ban, which due to the sockpuppets will probably fail, or removing the permissions at large.

Python string formatting uses the
%
operator.someValue = 12;
someString = "Test"
someFormattedString = "%d is an int and %s is a string" % (someValue, someString)
print someFormattedString
outputs
12 is an int and Test is a string

Oh, of course. I'm just learning Python, and I don't use it often enough to remember its quirks, even basic ones like string formatting.

@accalia There are good reasons for having an easily accessibly delete. Also, delete-happy people could just edit their posts instead, which leads to the same level of annoyance.

Sure you did. Ben starting logging his deleted posts or whatever the hell it was. That made him cut back. Although I think that's about when he started in on the sock puppetry in earnest.
While only one or two people have ever been banned, our sock puppeteer's been egregiously obnoxious enough for long enough that IMAO he's justified his own banning. Although, as I've already said twice, I'd prefer to just take away his ability to delete stuff. Unless he created sock puppets to get around that...which, oh look, he already did. Which, again, in my book would be grounds for at least banning the extant sockpuppets, with a warning that any further attempts to get around the delete-ban would result in all new accounts being terminated on discovery.
But again, taking away my ability to delete posts--and everyone else's--because one person abused the facility, is not cool.

Now that I think about it - he commonly does edit his posts to have no text content when he deletes them.
-

Editing the OP of a thread can't delete the rest of the posts in the thread, though.
And going on an abusive tear of editing posts instead of deleting them, after having your ability to delete taken away from you, seems like taunting the mods, which, again, IMNSHO, opens the door to being banned.

Paging @xaade?
In all seriousness, I don't have any other problems with @xaade editing stuff other than NEVER KNOWING WHEN HIS POSTS ARE DONE! :P
-
It sound like someone really should write a bot that stalks him and other unnecessarily null-edit/delete-happy accounts that are probably sockpuppets and quotes his stuff.
Barring moderator intervention it would work perfectly.
-
@Onyx You've never seen a deleted post, I assume.
If you delete a post, the content is still visible to the mods, just greyed-out and with different buttons next to the post.
Well, @clippy usually erases the content of his posts before deletion.

Status: Working from home today.
I'm so demotivated, I wonder if I can even spend 4 hours at the grindstone today. I was in the office yesterday and barely managed that. Sigh.
Maybe I should be "working" on my resume.
Ironically, I didn't feel nearly this demotivated until we had the company all-hands meeting where the very first question was "there's a huge morale problem, why is management doing nothing?" I just felt kind of bummed because my awesome boss left.
Also interestingly, yesterday was the first time I talked to the CTO who is (at the moment) my direct manager in like a full month. Our conversation went like this:
"Take out from ###, huh?"
"Yeah they do great curries."
"I got leftovers from ### I brought from home."
"Enjoy."
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

If management didn't do anything post-meeting, I wouldn't expect much to change.
-
@AyGeePlus See above where I edited in the very motivational and exciting "where did you get your lunch?" conversation from the CTO.
The CEO doesn't seem to understand the problem at all. I don't know if I already typed this, but when the meeting was up he was just talking about how great the product is, how big the market need is, etc.
What he didn't address is how I've been here 2 years and in that time I've seen exactly zero people from engineering promoted (despite the fact that we have at least 3 managerial positions open right now), and I've seen zero raises, and I've seen zero bonuses from the bonus program our company (allegedly) has.
Frankly, there are a LOT of good companies doing great work in a needy market, and a lot of them give raises and bonuses.

I left a job because an awesome boss left.
Well, also because right after that they moved us into a different building, and my team went from a 6 or 8-foot cube into a 3-foot one used for telemarketers...because they put us next to a bunch of telemarketers. Actually bill collectors, which was kind of worse.
-
@FrostCat We also moved to a different building about a year ago, and while I have way more space (in fact, the building's half-vacant), the commute got about 20 minutes worse.
-
@accalia It's not like you really care about that topic, and you just can't resist telling people what they can or can't do.

i care about the topic, i care about the discussion, and yeah i care about not having one (idiot/troll/asshole)[delete whichever two are inapplicable] delete the entire discussion just because they can.
it's one thing when you delete your own posts, that's annoying as fuck, but at least they're your posts. but to delete entire threads?
that's not cool. not cool at all.
