Status: Still tired. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep last night — stressed -out about the move. When I did sleep, I had weird dreams. I woke up from one dream with a weird and very lame song running through my head:
ARM must arm.
ARM must arm.
ARM shall win this war.Or something like that. That's ARM® as in Advanced RISC Machines. Maybe it made more sense in the context of the dream, which I don't remember, but I rather doubt it. It might also make more sense if it referred to Known Space's Amalgamated Regional Militia, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I was thinking of.
I also had a dream of conflict with my ex-wife (in itself, not so strange; one of the things causing me stress is the need to pay back alimony) in which she got a job with HP and was moving to a site in the middle of the Mojave Desert. IRL, she's a Special Ed teacher.

I've had enough.
I immediately drive to my car mechanic.
Mechanic: "Ok let's drive around, so I can hear."
We drive for like 5 km. Not a peep.
FUCK.

I was just reminded that C# doesn't have a mode where you can just paste a bunch of html or json code and get a multiline string
(I may be late to this party...)
Discovered recently that in VS2015 C++ you can do:
wchar* pText = LR"(This text is multiline with no escaping for "quotes"!)";
So I can paste that html or json code.

Status: WTF, DropBox, adding someone else's shared folder counts against MY space?!
That's exceedingly retarded on so many levels....I suppose it's there to prevent people from daisy-chaining free accounts to get essentially unlimited storage?
-
@Tsaukpaetra What's annoying is that if you have a free account and add someone else's top-tier paid account then they can easily run you out of space without even noticing. Which is exactly why I don't share a thing with my boss, despite it being one of her favourite collaboration tools…

This is exactly what I noticed when Dropbox sent me a helpful email that (all of the sudden) my box was full, despite me having literally nothing on it, except the shared folder and a few pics.
Disappointed, to say the least.

That's exceedingly retarded on so many levels....Even worse, you can't comp someone else's DropBox subscription. You can't buy a "gift certificate" or anything.
Back when Rantis were doing Robots In The News weekly, we ended up using DropBox after all peer-to-peer file syncing tools disappeared (which, BTW, WTF? An entire CLASS of application disappeared in like 6 months). The huge video files were eating up his free quota, so I was like "look, I'll just buy you an account." Nope! Can't do it!

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Were they all killed by DMCA or something?
It's almost like the "Sharing" feature is more like "lets put your box in with another person's box, and share space, so we can technically still call it 'sharing' but it isn't really".
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

They all saw DropBox and Box.com's success and said, "wait a minute, we're basically doing what they are BUT FOR FREE! We should buy a couple servers and rack in some $$$$$".
Note that the BEST of those peer-to-peer file sync tools belonged to Microsoft. It actually somehow morphed into OneDrive, which doesn't even slightly hint that it used to support direct peer-to-peer file sync (back when it was called SyncToy, then FolderShare, then Live Mesh in previous eras...)

We've had pretty good experience with Google Drive, particularly for the integration with Docs and Sheets. It's not the world's fanciest system, but it seems to hit a sweet point that our users tend to like, and it's very easy to work with other than the perennial problem of organising thousands of files. Nobody's cracked that (and yes, I have seen what Sharepoint does with competent configuration).
OTOH, we're also investing into the corporate version of dropbox, which apparently has some extra interesting capabilities. (I've yet to investigate what exactly they are, so I might be back here ranting about half-assed idiocy yet… )

I've been considering authoring a real cross platform sync tool using the lessons I've learned about such shenanigans through WtfCorp. I, too, feel the lack of a functional tool that isn't herpderp putitinthecloud!

I'm talking about peer-to-peer folder syncing, not cloud storage or online documents or whatever you're on about. AFAIK, Google has never offered that.

@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Ah, I misunderstood. But to be fair, our users really don't care if there's a remote server that mediates the communication with their peers; they just want to get shit done. They're way too busy engaged with the tech that they're specialists in (robots, funky analysis instruments, that sort of thing) to care all that much about folder synchronisation details.

-
@cartman82 Good clients don't force you to pop holes in your firewall/NAT device. They also use the OS' filesystem notification system so they don't have to spin-up sleeping drives or poll on a timer, like a rsync solution would. There's also typically a quota so the remote guy can't be a jerk and fill up your drive without your supervision, etc. No need to fumble around with crappy CLI SSH tools to make things secure.
Rsync is shit by comparison.
