The Official Status Thread

I suspect that *nix boxes talking to honest to goodness TTYs insert the CR somewhere at a lower level...(I'd have to do some research to be sure, though)
Later teletypes had a switch for line ending type.
-
there is no such thing as "8-bit ASCII",
Yes there is, it's an encoding where you have 7-bit ASCII but you allow unknown bytes with the high bit set to pass through unchanged.
-
Why are you even using the pile of brain damage called HP-UX to begin with?
I have no idea. I rarely have to interact with the OS at any level, given that I'm maintaining and developing a Java EE app, but that's par for the course here. There's still a fairly sizable group of COBOL programmers somewhere in the building.

Once again, being in a good mood, I did not let the cats eat it.

- A Steam account can only be logged into from one computer at a time. This means that updating your dedicated server will log you out of Steam on your computer. Additionally, the Alien Swarm dedicated server automatically hooks into Steam when you start it, so you can't play Alien Swarm on the same account that is running the server unless you close the Steam client before you start the server.
Erm...
-
Yeah, I frequently have steam logged in on my laptop and my desktop at the same time. Sometimes through my phone too, since someone built a working app finally. Too bad Valve won't but it's a Windows Store app, which means that it is Pure Evil in the Eyes of Gaben.
-
And me - it even pops up the whole sharing thing where I can run the game on my desktop and it streams to my laptop.
-
How? I had to register a second Steam account just to run the Unturned dedicated server on another system.
-
Well in the Android world we have to deal with either a a shitty offical iOS port or a fan rebuild of it that manages to be better than the official app
-
I... don't know...
Maybe the Linux/headless (?) server version of Steam doesn't allow simultaneous logons? Or one of your clients is way out of date. I know they enabled that functionality several months ago...
-
Maybe it's specifically SteamCMD that logs you out. Which doesn't make sense because it can only download dedicated servers and it doesn't let you do any other steam-y stuff.
-
I know they enabled that functionality several months ago...
Oh. This was sometime last year.
-
That might be it. Which would be -worthy indeed
-
Ah that might be it. I honestly have no idea when they let you do it, but I do remember it would log me out before.
-
I don't really like anything about how steam is designed, so it doesn't surprise me at all that a third party app would be superior. But they won't even release a SteamAPI for WP, only iOS and Android, so the one guy who managed a working chat app is rather awesome. I'm pretty sure that they changed the chat to not be xmpp all those years ago just so third parties would have a harder time.
-
Oh wow. Yeah the third-party Android one I linked to is basically just a reskin to make it not look like a horrible iOS port.
-
They don't mind having an app in the iOS and Android stores because you buy totally different games there, and they're usually not games that get released on PC except through Steam. But the Windows Store runs everywhere, and more-so soon. It's the worst thing imaginable for Valve: a software distribution platform that comes with the OS, with full DirectX support.
As soon as they heard it, they called it the worst thing ever, publicly, and started getting their unix compatibility working, and put a whole lot more effort into steamboxes.
-
Yeah, see, I don't really see the Windows App store competing with Steam in the near (or far, for that matter) future, given the Steam userbase and the amount of utter shit apps on the Windows store right now... I know of no games I'd pay money for on the Windows store at the moment.
Doesn't excuse Valve not making a client though, that's just stupid.
-
Status update: Completely stunned. I've just been told that every application that uses these HP-UX servers has been required to strip or replace every non-ASCII character, including irreplaceable characters like Ñ. This is the biggest telco in the country. And none of their invocing systems are capable of displaying our language's full character set in a printed sheet of paper.
I've never seen something this retarded in my life. The worst part is that IT'S A FUCKING USER SETTING. Any competent sysadmin should be able to switch the default character set of your Unix users. I'm sure I could with a few minutes of googling.
I'm not gonna stay long in this company, that's for fucking sure.

Status: Just completed the campaign of Alien Swarm with me and three bots on normal difficulty. Apparently this is the first time I've ever completed the campaign without someone dying because I got this achievement:
Complete a campaign on Normal difficulty or harder without any marines dying.

It's simple. They refuse to have a competitor, or acknowledge that a competitor exists. They'll move to Linux if they have to, but they must be the only one to be happy. If EA made software that could have steam involved in some way, they wouldn't support that either.
The only game I've bought from the windows store so far is Blazblue. They only have Calamity Trigger afaik, and it's the arcade version, and it's unplayable on touch (but has gamepad and keyboard support, so that's not such a problem!). I know Arc is terrified of piracy, so maybe they'll release one of their newer games at some point.
And that's on 8, where it's hard to do that.
-
If EA made software that could have steam involved in some way, they wouldn't support that either.
To be perfectly fair to Valve, I wouldn't either. Origin: All the crappiness of Steam, without the userbase or (relatively) gamer-friendly parent company... :)
-
Wasn't the reason that Valve wanted to get away from Windows originally that Microsoft said they would only allow store apps to run or had some statement that was misinterpreted to mean that?
-
This is the biggest telco in the country
oh boy...
oh boy...
which one of the two?
Tell me it's not the same one that uses smalltalk
-
To be perfectly fair to Valve, I wouldn't either.
Right, but when that reaches the point of hurting phone users who pretty much buy games from you exclusively, you're making a mistake.
Wasn't the reason that Valve wanted to get away from Windows originally that Microsoft said they would only allow store apps to run or had some statement that was misinterpreted to mean that?
If so, they have 0 reading comprehension. But it's pretty unlikely. I think they just don't want to become Mozilla. So they decided to go with Linux. Like Mozilla did. Maybe Origin will Chrome them.
Disclaimer: I don't want that to happen and know nothing about Origin except that it is universally reviled.
-
Alternatively, Valve decided that they wanted to leverage the general dislike of Windows 8 to promote their new hardware and OS.
-
Whoa, jellypotato when I press reply?
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised about that either, but Gaben did say that the store was the worst idea he'd ever heard.

Erm...
Oh right.
The funny thing is I actually read Ben L's post back when he posted it, and it didn't occur to me what he was typing hasn't been true for like 3 years.
RARE BEN L TIMEPOD POST!

Origin: All the crappiness of Steam, without the userbase or (relatively) gamer-friendly parent company...
But Origin has customer support and a refund policy.
-
Alternatively, Valve decided that they wanted to leverage the general dislike of Windows 8 to promote their new hardware and OS.
Well considering the HUGE EXPLOSIVE RECORD SALES of the SteamBox, that was really a successful strategy, wasn't it?
-
Except that my post was written using knowledge I had acquired that day. Which has already been established in this thread.
RARE BLAKEYRAT TIMEPOD POST!
-
Considering Windows 8 has less market share on Steam than 32-bit Vista, and 8.1 has less market share than Linux, I'd say it was a successful marketing effort.
-
32-bit Windows 8 has less than 32-bit Vista. 64-bit Windows 8.1 has more.
32-bit Windows 8.1 has less than Linux. 64-bit Windows 8.1 has significantly more. What's your point?
-
Oh. I didn't notice that they separated 64 bit out because it doesn't say 32 bit for Windows 8, but it does for every other OS.
-
Whoa, jellypotato when I press reply?
There are some remains of jellypotato around. Got it few times on "X users liked this", too. Not sure if it's the link or the usercards after a delayed click, but it never happened before the avatars loaded. Can't get a reliable repro though, so...

It's Telecom. I don't think there's any Smalltalk here. What there is is a veritable mess of Big Software Vendor Solutionsâ„¢ accumulated over the years. Among all those is a shitty Unix version and an incompetent sysadmin team. Java EE 6 with a thick Swing client seems like a revolution among the software I'm seeing around here.
I guess there's a small relief in the irony of a huge telecommunications company being unable to grasp the basis of communication, our own fucking language.

That would make the now-live Steam Streaming an impossibility, no? I mean, I have Steam on three machines, and be logged into it on all three simultaneously, and have been able to for longer than I've had three devices with Steam installed ;)
-
We've established that the SteamCMD tool is what causes the issues.
-
So the UI client has multi-device support, but they couldn't be bothered to add it to the CLI version
-
Microsoft said they would only allow store apps to run or had some statement that was misinterpreted to mean that?
no, Gabe Newell listened to all the idiots about "how horrible the Start screen is" and said Windows 8 would suck for gaming.
Meanwhile I can (pointlessly) get up to 600fps in Minecraft in ideal conditions, or 200+ FPS on Ultra in full HD in WoW.
-
The CLI version that can only install dedicated servers and therefore is pointless to have DRM on, yes.

Well, it involves standing in front of a wall.
