Merging topics
-
I have no magical powers here and frankly, I really can't be arsed to set up my own DC installation because I value my sanity.
I know DC can merge topics. Given the insanity of piti ids (post id/topic id pairs), what the fuck actually happens when it merges? Does it just shove the second thread entirely at the end?
Is this a source of more amusement for TDWTF denizens? I don't recall seeing merged threads anywhere.
-
I value my sanity
Then why do you hang out here?
I don't recall seeing merged threads anywhere.
No, we all know someone who had the hots for splitting threads, but so far if anybody has tried merging, it's been pretty inconspicuous.
-
Because here actually helps retain my sanity, as ridiculous and contradictory as that sounds. Here I am amongst people who understand what it means to deal with WTF, in a way none of my regular friends or family can.
And yeah, that's what I mean.
-
Well, leader powers only allow me to move, not split nor merge (if possible). Shame, hoped I finally found a use for them.
-
Not even basic moderator powers? What fucking use is leader anyway?
-
Level 3 gives you the ability to recategorise and rename topics, access to The Lounge (a category in meta, only Level 3 and above can post to /view) and have any links you post not nofollowed as they are by default.
Hope the manual quoting works, since you can't highlight and get a "quote reply" option on threads you can't otherwise post to, even if you're already working on a post (since the draft wouldn't show up there for me).

Merge test topic 1598, post 2

Merge test topic 1598, post 3

Merge test topic 1598, post 4

Merge test topic 1598, post 1.
Edit: It appears both the topic and post numbers get changed.
-
Absolutely no indication of a merger in this topic. Lovely.
-
Merge test 2, posted in "Merging topics" @2215UTC

And Merge Test topic still exists and has its OP.

That's your indication then
True, you can just search for it! Wait...
-
And from that I summise that 'merging' a whole thread copies the first post and moves the others to the end of the topic they're being moved to.
-
Now, for an absolutely silly question, since "private messages" are just topics where people are invited, can they be merged or split or otherwise messed with in the same way?
-
That would seem consistent but still flawed if you end up happening to merge an older thread with a more modern one which can cause all kinds of odd disjoint.
-
Probably though they might require URL manipulation to make happen?
-
Merge test - PM -> public topic
-
So, yes.
-
Now, for an absolutely silly question, since "private messages" are just topics where people are invited, can they be merged or split or otherwise messed with in the same way?
Yup. This...
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/merging-topics/1596/23?u=pjh
started off as a PM from me to you.
-
I'd still expect the arrow indicator on the merged topics though, like they are linked from the topic they came from. Not ideal, but at least you'd be able to follow the breadcrumb trail.
Merge test - PM -> public topic
Then again...
-
That seems dangerous.
-
That seems dangerous.
It seemed perfectly safe to me until @PJH merged a PM. Which is... can't decide what it is, really.
-
Just edged you out by posting the screenshot for everyone.
I still find it absolutely silly (like @Arantor) that private messages are just threads, so you can't get rid of any that you don't want yourself. Not that I get any, though, beyond the system one and @PJH's test one.
I also noticed all the action links are part of the "private message" threads, too. Really cements that they are just threads and not something even slightly segregated.
-
I moved a post to an existing topic: Merge test - PM -> public topic
-
I'm not against the notion of reusing data structures since in both cases you're talking about a collection of messages in a bucket, the difference being access controls and appearance. The fact you can blithely switch one to another is, however, somewhat disconcerting. I'd have assumed that even if they were using the same data structure that some logic would be in place to prevent such.
(Yes, I know you can copy/paste but that's a wilful dissemination of information rather than the merge which could almost be accidental)

I moved a post to an existing topic: Merge test - PM -> public topic
Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...
-
This is amusing.
-
This is amusing.
Did you get a notification for that? Or just followed the link from here when you saw it?
-
I followed the link. I didn't think to check for a notification since I was in the topic when it happened. I'll keep an eye out if you want to try again.
Also, to reply to the post I originally replied against, can you actually have it not show the "moved posts to X topic" when you do it?
-
I followed the link.
You lucky, lucky person - you're the only non-mod who can. Or at least should be able to...
I didn't think to check for a notification since I was in the topic when it happened.
I meant a PM notification, not a 'this topic' notification.
-
+1, ran out of likes
-
You lucky, lucky person - you're the only non-mod who can. Or at least should be able to...
I assume because it is a topic I have access to. Not logged in, I get this if I try to follow the link:
I meant a PM notification, not a 'this topic' notification.
I didn't think to check, and they go away as soon as I look at the PM, no matter how I get to it (since someone else gave me a new PM and I didn't go through the notifications pane to view it).
-
Something actually works in Discourse...?
-
and they go away as soon as I look at the PM,
If it's recent enough, there should still be the notification there - the one from PJHH here for example; it's been read, but it was the most recent notification.
-
Leader powers don't help either. Darn. I really hoped we found another 'sploit here.
-
Well, I thought you meant the green bubble.
I have a notification that links me to the 2nd post, the move notification, but no notification taking me to the third post that you merged into the PM.
That URL at the bottom left is from hovering over your PM notification.
And yes, I obscured the identity of the person who sent me another PM that I can "never get rid of".
-
@PJH, check flags.
Also, why does flagging offer me to notify myself?
Edit: Oh, it errors out... well, that's something. I guess?
-
Notifying yourself in case you want to remind yourself that you've done something worth being notified for.
-
It seemed perfectly safe to me until @PJH merged a PM. Which is... can't decide what it is, really.
Dangerously Dicsourse

Can you move a flag notification too?
-
Can you move a flag notification too?
Yup. They're guess what.....?
Edit: Onyx's post #46 was originally a flag.
-
Everything's a topic so everything can be merged and abused. Awesome!

What I normally see before clicking Reply to what is a PM/Topic:

And this is all considered a good idea? WUT.
