😈 The Evil Ideas thread

Continuing the discussion from The bad ideas thread:
alias vim=rm -f
In the interest of using Discourse The One True Way, I made a separate thread for ideas that are intentionally harmful as opposed to merely stupid.

Pretty much any use of Junction in a frequently used location.

I'm taking that as implicit agreement that I should be a moderator.

I regret that I have but one like to give for this post.

And that's the topic ladies and gentlemen! Good night!
Someone award @chubertdev the "Penny on the rail" badge.
Also, you broke Discourse. Trying to quote your post gets DC stuck in infinite loading.

I WIN!!!

You might as well do
alias vim=rm -rf
to nuke directories, too. I often do
$ cd project $ vim .
and have NERDTree come up automatically.

Appears to have cleared; quoting it works now (but I've nothing to add so I didn't bother to try posting my test).

Evil idea of the day: change my avatar to promote certain profane ideas

It's a FF specific bug, see:
http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/infinite-loading-on-quote/1359
Still happens for me in any case.
Ummm... onebox? Wakey-wakey? Oh, fuck it, I don't care anymore.

BELGIUM!
Excuse me, I think you should restrict that sort of language to something artistic.
-
Like a statue of a pee-ing boy? In this case giving his support for the national Belgium soccer team.
-
I nominate @Luhmann for the "Most Gratuitous Use of the Word 'Belgium' in a Serious Post" badge.
-
Oooh thank you, you're to kind. I didn't prepare a speech but I just wanted to thank Belgium for the support in this matter.

On the contrary, the fake two-party system is perfectly on topic as an evil idea. Having the two parties bicker about cosmetic issues and issues that can't really be resolved to anyone's satisfaction is the perfect distraction from the fact that there's no significant difference in what the parties do when in power.

See, this is what I'm talking about. I have no problem with him posting it, but derailment is now bound to happen. We're gonna switch to the topic of "is it an evil idea" and then to general political WTFery, and then... who knows.

That's all part of the evil. Meta-evil, if you will.

Implicit type conversion
-
Between the people who swear implicit type conversion is Teh Devil and those who swear implicit type juggling (i.e. type jugging without the permanence, a la PHP) is Teh Devil, we might as well just say that loose typing is flat out an evil idea.
-
Works for me.
-
I'm not entirely against the idea despite the fact that I do a fuck load of PHP, whereupon I greatly lament the lack of the crazy-flexible array structure in Unity's C# implementation.
But if we dropped loose typing, the overall quality of programming would undoubtedly improve because too many slapdash programmers couldn't cope without it.
-
Type inference.
-
I first read that as 'type interference' and realised that there's no substantial difference between the two.
-
That's why if I ever become World Dictator of Programming, my first official act will be to ban all programming languages except Haskell and Ada.
Filed under: Yes, I am mad, thanks for asking

x = "2" print(x + "2") x = 2 print(x + 2)

But if we dropped loose typing, the overall quality of programming would undoubtedly improve because too many slapdash programmers couldn't cope without it.
But if you use a type-strict programming language, there's a good chance that you'll spend a lot of your effort just writing shims to let you wedge data in one type into another type so that you can hand it off to the next main part of the program. Why? Because the two have strict types and have a different way to write the same thing (because reasons). Which wouldn't be too bad, except you find this happens at nearly every single module transition in the whole program.
Wait, you're expecting everyone everyone to use a single type system that works well together? Ho ho ho…
-
It wouldn't solve interoperability issues, but it'd make modules cleaner internally.

Serves me well most of the times. Of course, that's a a framework feature, not a language feature, but hey! It works.

I tried to work out which house I was in. It wasn't pleasant... I'm not smart enough to be a Ravenclaw, I'm not brave enough to be a Gryffindor, I'm not unpleasant enough to be Slytherin, which means I must be a Hufflepuff.
