Why does your username disappear from the top as you scroll down?
-
Is there a reason the user name is dissapearing within a topic?
Scroll down

It disappears when the site logo is replaced with the topic title, probably to give it a bit more room.
-
Might be related to this post from morbs, who seems to have been in a discussion with ben_lubar about something similar.

I don't see the point of it in desktop mode where you can guarantee a reasonable amount of horizontal space.

What is that “desktop” you speak of?

I believe it's what people who actually do shit call their computer.

Don't believe him. He has quoted another post. You can't do that on mobile.
Filed under: unless it's so well hidden I haven't found it so far.

You can type it out.

You can quote by highlighting the text. I don't know if that would work on all devices, but I've done it on WP8 and an Android tablet.
-
I'll file that under "sarcasm tag not used".
-
Keith beat me to it
-
Ok, I'll try that the next time I'm desperate enough to follow TDWTF's forum on my mobile.

Don't forget to enable the user preference first.

Enable quote reply for highlighted text

Oh. There. Sorry, the dropboxes sort of overshadow the "smaller" options below. Yup, had that checked already.
-
Indeed it probably is but it still remains strange. Why display the user name in the first place? It gives you hardly any new info.
Thanks @codinghorror for confirming this explanation by ninja changing the topic from bug to meta. Really helpful.

Your link is doing it WRONG. It should point to www.XXX.com Don't you read the http://thedailywtf.com/ ?

I think they forget: "0. Don't be a jerk"

I think they forget: "0. Don't be a jerk"
If you follow all those rules, you won't be thought by other people to be a jerk. It doesn't matter whether your inner jerkishness is still there; it's about public perception.
-
It is not because you follow those rules that you won't show off that what you are: a jerk.

I started pointing all my not-really-links to http://zombo.com for nostalgia.

I will give that a try the next time I'm using Discourse on mobile.
-
Ok. I tried. At least five times. I can mark a bit of text, but I can't quote, no matter what. Yes, the settings should be ok, feel free to check. Perhaps there is a secret touch sequence I don't know? Anyway, Discourse on mobile sucks.
-
Select-to-quote seems broken on my computer as well.
Anyway, Discourse o

What browser and os, with versions? You too @ben_lubar.
-
Weird, it's working for me now.
I did accidentally push ^Q about an hour ago and I had to start Chrome back up, so it may have been fixed by the refresh.
-
htc desire, Android version 4.0.4. Browser is firefox.
The "Quote reply" pop-up dosen't seem to appear, just the orange markers delimiting the selected text.

We only officially support the standard/default browser on a device (in this case, Google Chrome/Android), and technically Android 4.1 is our minimum supported version:

We only officially support the standard/default browser on a device
Given that you require people to use a specific browser on specific operating systems and that you've previously said you don't support pre-release browser versions, I can only assume you're having to do a lot of work to maintain compatibility with each browser release. What's going to happen to the communities that have installed Discourse if your vision doesn't pan out and you decide to stop supporting the product?
I'm not trying to be unkind about the product, but it seems very fragile.

The problem is that "alternative" browsers on mobile platforms are extremely quirky. Like.. extremely, nutso freaky crazy quirky. Try Chrome on iOS, it is quirk town USA. It does things I've never seen any version of Chrome do on desktop or Android.
We've had virtually no issues with Android/Chrome or iOS/Mobile Safari browser releases from early 2013 to now.. no reason why we'd expect that to change. That's a solid year and a half of new default mobile platform browser versions, zero of which have caused issues for us.
So based on that experience, I don't anticipate any problems.
(I'd also add that current version mobile browsers are so damn good in terms of features and performance there's zero reason to install an alternative browser for 99% of users. It's not like a brand new phone is running Windows XP and IE 6 and needs an upgrade to be usable.)

Necro! But I just found this:
Well, so much for that idea!
-
Why does @Luhmann keep necroing topics that nobody cares about anymore?
-
Ah this brings back memories ... the days that Jeff moved your topics around and bike shedding was new.
-
He has quoted another post. You can't do that on mobile.
Sixteen months later, and you still can't. Not without experiencing 43846576843209.6 bugs in the process, anyway.
-
That .6 of a bug is the one that gets you. After swallowing so many whole you choke on an oddly shaped one.
