Badges!!

That's the kind of situation when you only hide the posts (Facebook definition of the word delete) until further noticed.
It's not like you're gonna delete a user only to save some database memory space!?

Behind the scenes, that's what happens here as well. See threads passim about edit histories and why they were disabled.
-
So this is a false problem as long as there's always the possibility to undo the user deletion.
-
I think @Nagesh has got to be in the running, too. @ben_lubar and/or @codinghorror may have him beat on individual posts, but @Nagesh has formed a more consistent mental model.

Ah - not as a single action, it doesn't appear to be. Which neatly describes what the problem is, and what the solution might be.
Trouble is, you then have all the posts where said user has been quoted, requoted, etc, etc, etc. Do you then
- go for the cascade delete,
- modify every post to remove the quote or
12345678901234567890. leave as-is...
Either way it gets messy.
So, usual solution I've seen elsewhere is
- Hide just the offending posts
- Stop the user being able to log in
- Keep an eye out for the user rejoining under an alias.
MPS was a particularly egregious example, and he got 'back-end' deleted IIRC (i.e. Alex bypassed the CS interface altogether to remove his posts.)

My memory isn't the best*, can someone explain what was so atrocious as to require damnatio memoriae?
*
It's barely even DDR
Yeah, I remember MPS being kind of a dick, but not that much else. IIRC, he was also doing stuff on other sites or something. I liked @TunnelRat much better. Now there was a racist troll for you. You don't get racist trolls like that any more.

http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/11308/194716.aspx#194716 probably sums it up the best.
He appears as Farmer Brown in this thread.
This post summarises why a back-end delete was necessary rather than using the CS frontend.
The permabans were because he managed to wind up a majority of the active posters.

Is it fun winding up users?

Ahhhhh....I'd totally forgotten about @Farmer_Brown. Oops.

Derailing a thread is one of the big no-nos that the mods (and the regulars) frown on, definitely. I don't want to return to the days when every thread became a flamefest.
Derailing a thread was a big no-no? My how things have changed.

We want a different badge for giving out like. If I like 1000 post- I want gold like giver.
10000 posts - silver like giver and something. You can keep any kind of metal you like.

I think it was more of which set of rails that it ended up on, rather than the fact it ended up on a different set.
I may be misremembering however..

I remember lots of "DON'T FULLQUOTE THE OP!" rants and subsequent fullquotes, for one. That was a favorite.

What's the convention for showing badges in the popup thing when you click the avatar? I guess it's "latest", but that means that one type of badge can just get spammed onto it. Could it be changed to latest DISTINCT badges?

Judging from looking at mine, Gold/Silver/Bronze seems to have a part to play...
@Sam - any insights?

Well mine seems to be spammed with Good Post exclusively. Looks weird, really.
-
Yeah, seems like it should put the number received (if multiple) or just show some distinct stuff. I'm sure this is part of what @sam meant when he said there was a lot of work to do with badges.
