@Nagesh said in βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:
So many ideas and so little time to build them all.
So many of those ideas make the stupidity that our freshman students come up with look the very model of wisdom.
They have to create adverts for their proposed products; they're put up on some noticeboards at work. Some of the ideas are very clever and might even be things that they could (with effort and gumption) turn into real earners. Most are more apt for this thread (though not fair game as they're just freshmen) and some are just astoundingly bad ideas, directly into βthat's illegal, you moronsβ territory. It's good fun.
No pictures. I don't think it's fair on them.

I saw this:
- A bounty is being offered to everybody who kills a rat in the Pakistani city of Peshawar. From Tuesday, residents will be paid 300 rupees (Β£2) for every rodent apprehended in the worst-affected part of the city. That bonus is reduced to just 25 rupees in the rest of the city.
As entrepreneurs start farming rats...
ps. Got it from the BBC Magazine Article April Fool's Day: 10 stories that look like pranks but aren't:

Yes, Unless you are literally Youtube.com Autoplay video/audio is a very bad idea indeed. and even then you should never do it on embed.

@boomzilla I knew Axl was doing something with AC/DC; didn't realise he was the substitute vocalist.
I just don't see it working. At all.

eeeh. i'm actually willing to give youtube a miss on that one given that they are a video playing site.
i would like to see them add clicktoplay to their videos when arriving directly on the video page from a referrer that isn't youtube

Nah, I consider Youtube unusable without Flashblock (which, fortunately, also blocks HTML5 videos and so on). I tend to open (and have) a lot of background tabs, so auto-play will turn my browsing experience into a cacophony.

hmm... there was that extension for chrome that muted automatically any backgrounded tab... IIRC it only allowed the currently active tab in any non minimized window to play music.....
i wonder if i can find that again.
-
@accalia said in βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:
extension for chrome
That would be great, especially since I use Firefox. ;-)
I also do like background tabs that play sound (e.g., talk, music or whatever that I'm half-listening to while doing something else). FWIW Flashblock works great for this. No stupid autoplaying flash thingys ever, no stupid HTML5 video/audio autoplaying ever -- I really don't see any reason why I would want it any different.

I'm not sure about this being a good idea or a bad idea, really. On the one hand, if I were working in a zoo, I really wouldn't want to get in an enclosure with the animal that scared the shit out of a guy who spent his time playing with fucking crocodiles, funnelweb spiders, and Eastern Taipans.
OTOH, I also would really, really want to make sure that that two tons of cuddly-looking omnivorous territorial imperative on legs didn't get a toothache.
I'm so conflicted here.

@ben_lubar I found the real Bad Ideas thread for you!

Just read about this fustercluck. Commit a crime to help you win your patent case, get found out and then commit escalating crimes up to finally trying to have the judge murdered. Bonus: The original crime wasn't even necessary to win the patent case
The Cadence group Quickturn was also involved in a series of legal events with Mentor Graphics/Aptix. Mentor purchased rights to an Aptix patent, then sued Cadence. In this case, the CEO of Aptix, Amr Mohsen, forged a notebook in order to make the patent case stronger. When suspicions were raised, he staged a break-in of his own car to get rid of the evidence, resulting in charges of obstruction of justice. Trying to avoid this, he attempted to flee the country, only to be caught with an illegal passport and a pile of cash. While in jail for this offense, he was recorded offering money to intimidate witnesses and kill the judge. In order to fight the new charges, he tried to feign psychological problems, but left a trail of evidence of his research into this defense, and how it might be done. He was charged with attempting to delay a federal trial by feigning incompetency, but was convicted anyway. According to the lawyers concerned, the original notebooks were not needed for the trial. The patent filing date, which was not in dispute, would have sufficed.</quote>

@anotherusername I agree that having an open jar of petroleum jelly in the middle of a store with a sign asking random passersby to stick their fingers (or other appendages) in it is not very hygienic, but why goggles?
-
@ScholRLEA better recheck the user/post I was replying to. That wasn't it.

@anotherusername I know, but the juxtaposition seemed amusing...

@ScholRLEA well, either way you should google "goggles california" and it should immediately become clear.
