"Beta", eh? I can see that.

It's Ulaxi! It's a site to help you compare your options for getting somewhere: Uber, Lyft, or taxi. Leaving aside the obvious WTFs (like the name), we see this software is in beta and limited to San Francisco only. Okay, let's try an easy query: Market and Powell to SFO. Notwithstanding that this would usually be a BART trip.
That's ... interesting, I guess. Maybe I can poke it a little, make it work better.
.... There we go, I fixed it!

If you want to be accosted by an insane, naked man, then sure. Or maybe you want BART Officer Barney Fife to accidentally shoot you in the back when he gets his taser and gun mixed-up*. Or just enjoy the aroma and delightful attitudes of San Franciscans.
As for the app, it looks like in the first one it got the distance and cost right (although the quoted time is hilariously optimistic.) As for the second, it apparently isn't very good at parsing addresses. Presumably they're just passing that shit directly on to Uber, Lyft, etc. and since those apps work in more places than SF they don't know what to make of it.
(*Hint: The gun is the one that goes bang-bang and that no BART officer is qualified to carry. The taser is the one you use for electrocuting bums when they're jerking off in public.)

The problem is it's not local ENOUGH. It should only cover one block.

That's why it's "better than paid hosting". You certainly wouldn't want a website that you're actually paying for to go down.

Nice :)
Although the authors of this pile of poo clearly spent (0.0000001 * Avg(PricePerFabergeEgg)) on the development and hosting!

That would still imply they spent a dollar or two..

It does say San Francisco only, and SFO is not in San Francisco (it's in San Mateo County).

Except, that's clearly not the problem. The problem in the second photo is that "powell and market" is ambiguous as it doesn't include a city name so it picks something at random way outside of San Francisco and then gives the cost/distance to SFO. It clearly recognizes SFO as an address. Go to the site, type "powell and market sf" in the first box, in the second box type sfo and select "San Francisco Airport", and it gives the correct amounts.
As for the first photo, it actually gives the correct distance (or really, really near it.. maybe it's working off of fennec's device's location which is really close to powell @ market). However it displays the [object Object] value, which I can recreate by typing in an address and then hitting "Enter" before it has a chance to load the auto-complete list.

I guess Alpha is the new beta in Silicon Valley.

Cut this site some slack. This is the first major step forward in achieving my dream of visiting all of the sites shown in the opening credits of Full House as economically as possible.

Speaking of god-awful SF-specific "apps", you missed the Dolo thread. It's got everything: hideous shirts, "bespoke apps", ugly European cars and some ideas for establishing a profitable working relationship with abortion clinics.

Where do you think I've been the last few years? I was sitting in that goddamn park waiting for anyone else using the app to be my friend. My loneliness was finally broken when I met a clueless tween who should have been searching for "YOLO," but was very much out of the loop socially. Needless to say, we bonded over our shared love of hideous shirts and the Peugeot 1007. We're to be married next spring.Cut this site some slack. As a tangential follow-up, I just noticed this part. Google's new-maps may be a WTF in the UI, but this is scarily accurate:

Naah, the only ones that are really useful for getting to Pier 39 are Powell (for the cable car transfer) and Embarcadero (for the F).

Hey guys,
Author here - thanks for the feedback!
Fennec pointed out that the app doesn't process intersections that well. This is because the program uses Google Maps API, and it's not interpreting the address correctly at this moment. I tested with Google Maps and it's able to correctly interpret it (though not always), and so I need to figure out why it's not working through the API. Definitely have added to my fix list though. First step would be to add a map back in and see where it's pointing to!
As far as the [object object] error, I've definitely noticed this as well. There's probably a way within Google Maps API to handle this, because it doesn't happen when you use Google Maps, but I haven't found it yet.
morbiuswilters pointed out that the time estimates are optimistic. I definitely agree - I even mention this on the Methodology page. The estimate is provided by Google Maps and seems bullish. I want to add a drag factor, but I need to work out how to ask the user for data after their trip. Any suggestions?
And of course, the server crash. I had no idea I'd get that many hits from Hacker News, and now that I see there's at least a fair amount of interest, I need to find a better webserver. Are there any servers this group would suggest?
All in all, definitely a beta and thank you for taking a look, though I'm cool calling it an alpha as well! As I pointed out on Hacker News, this is my first program in a decade or so. No boot camp, just learning on my own. All constructive feedback as I learn is much appreciated :).
