You do know that Opera 12 and earlier had javascript driven UI, right?
You could script parts of it in JS, yes. Because Qt, in which Opera was written in, supports scripting. But the browser itself was written in C++, and used native(ish) OS controls. And you know, was written in a compiled language that didn't have to run a complete JS runtime just to show a button on the screen.

According to Opera devs UI was handled by Opera javascript engine (Carakan) - it's pretty close to 'web technology driven UI' to me.
But anyway, I don't see a problem here. UI based on Node or any other newest coolest shit will be less efficient than native UI, sure, but impact of that on user will be none. It's just too simple a task, to cause noticeable performance loss.
The real problem, of course, is the engine they chose. Abilitty to open 50, 70, 100+ tabs without choking your system to death, was one of the greatest things about Opera. With Blink it's impossible, that crap can eat any amount of RAM.
-
Abilitty
what piece of software is that? i'm not familliar with it and my google-fu only finds people trying to spell ability and @accaliaing it, and people with the last name of abilitty.
from the name i would guess it's a terminal multiplexer?

#õ_Ô ?
You may want to read the sentence again:Abilitty to open 50, 70, 100+ tabs without choking your system to death, was one of the greatest things about Opera.

Oh... shit...
Tab... tab stacking... it works... I... I can stack tabs again...
*bites lip*
No, this is wrong! I will not use a browser written in Node! No! NO! NOOOOOOO!!!
<small>Tab stacking works...</small>
I...darn it now I have to try it...
(although the tab stacking in the Firefox Tab Utilities extension is good enough that it would need something else I like in order to keep me)

I've been using Vivaldi since this thread was posted, just to see what would happen.
It's really rough around the edges (can't drag tab to new window?!?!?) but hopefully it will mature.
It's fast. It's handling some things that were choking the life out of Firefox and Chrome, so to me it's an improvement over all.

So I had this thing open for purposes of testing Discourse brokenness. I remembered one gripe I have with Opera: mp4s (presumably h264 encoded) don't work. Well, it loads the player, but won't play them. Something about licencing, no proper support for
ffmpeg
on Linux or whatever... This requires testing! So I got meself a link to an mp4 from chat logs...
Well... that's new.
Note: In case you're tempted to type that into your address bar, I have no idea what that video is. Probably something stupid. You have been warned.

35.54KB? I wouldn't touch it with a fifty-foot hammer… except to smash it into oblivion!

It's 9gag. That probably means it's a nothing more than a GIF wrapped into an mp4 just to be an asshole to people who use anything other than Chrome.

-
I just typed a long diatribe about how it makes no sense but... Have you seen how GIFs are being used lately? Like that 31MB monstrosity linked in the status thread?
I think they may be doing it because video files actually turn out smaller.
It seems that Imgur is doing something similar as well, but they are using webm.
-
Oh, also, confirmation of "colouring by looking at the favicon" theory. I have that "update favicon on updates" feature turned on. As soon as the favicon gains a number:
It's red, usually.

As soon as I saw these leaked office '16 screenshots I came over here as fast as I could.

Good job I guess?
Did you... come here for any particular purpose... or...?

s/STORYBOARDING/Waterboarding/ for the CIA version.
Also, why is there a smiley in the corner? Who would want to put anything like that in a presentation, report or other professional communication?
-
Hey, I found a very limited use for it (cross-posting from the status thread)!
Yes, I'm giving it a fair shake. I'm actually using it for forums and general web stuff "at home". 99% of the reasons I use it basically tab stacking though. Not overly impressed by anything else atm.
-
Maybe it's for feedback?
Like, things you like/don't like?
-
Well that's an improvement from Office 2013 with three shades of grey ranging from very light grey to a bit less light grey.
-
What the... Really?
If I saw this in something like Code::Blocks I'd raise an eyebrow and make a comment in the vein of "Ok guys, you could at least try to appear professional"
So... this is now in Visual Studio... Combined with the Win8 BSoD, my faith in anyone remaining professional, in appearance at least, is slowly disappearing.

Would you like to have VS2010 back?

I don't know. I didn't use it. Your threat / generosity cannot be properly parsed using the data set I have access to.

Hey, I got 4 replies from that post, dont knock it.

Aside from the capitalization Discoursistency (the Team Foundation Server plugin was written with Office 2013 in mind, which capitalizes ribbon titles), not a WTF at all. Color is a big part of the Office branding now, and this helps you find the Office program you're working with. I wish they retained amber for Outlook, or made it Entourage purple, rather than the "slightly different shade of blue from Word" it is now.
-
I'd rather have the black theme from Office 2010 back. I hope that's an option.
Of course it's irrelevant because here we're just moving onto 2010 so won't be on 2016 any time soon.
-
It's also visible at the bottom of lync 2013

Quick! Ask @wood to add one to Discforce!

Well, except when trying to do something complex, then it's every damn time.

Ah, yes. A linear expression of one's experience when meeting Discourse for the first time.
While @aliceif did a fine job, I find @dkf's use of

I guess I can't argue with that logic.
I still have no idea why you posted it in this thread though.

Because, like @Zecc implied, you didn't read the thread?

I read the thread, the Office screenshots come out of nowhere for absolutely no reason.

You cannot be that obtuse. It is painfully obvious how that is relevant to the conversation for every other person reading this thread.
