I'm not familiar with the Yes Doctor.
-
you're not? shame. he really is the best doctor.
-
My favourite's Tennant.
But then I only started getting into Who in 2005, when it restarted with Chris Ecclescake.

Is this another ret-con thing like the War Doctor? I haven't made it past Capaldi's first season.

I'd say Tennant, then Tom Baker.
-
okay, i wasn't sure before but now i am.
You sir, have been wooshed.
I answered "yes" in the sense affirmative.

< Yes the light switch is either on or offI'll leave it up to the rest of the forum to decide if that is of sufficient woosh quality to earn a

I don't think his Doctor is technically canon though
-
He has a shitload more screen-time than McGann.
-
I Jeffed 6 posts to an existing topic: In which we discuss a Doctor Who whoosh
-
True, but he's never counted as one of the Doctors; it's always Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, Davidson, Baker, McCoy, McGann, Ecclestone, Tennant, Smith, Hurt, Capaldi.
-
He fought the SHIT out of Daleks. Now you're gonna tell me Daleks are non-canon! I DON'T THINK SO.
-
Now now, no need to get ridicul-
Oh, of course. Carry on ;)

@accalia's answer is meant to say that all the Doctors are awesome.
Even Cushing!?
Can we say all the regenerations of the Doctor are awesome, but not all of the actors who portrayed him have done so awesomely?Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be beaten senseless by all sides.

amen.
/me hands @HardwareGeek a wooden round shield

Even Cushing!?
He didn't play The Doctor. He played a human doctor, last name Who. Literally Doctor Who. He is a separate character, AFAIC.
-

Thanks. I appreciate the thought, but a wooden shield isn't really the best protection against flames.

true, but i'm not giving up my frost shield. not until i stop getting flamed!

I'm confused ... Who are we talking about?
-
Capaldi > (Smith = Eccleston) > Tennant
Tennant just needed to be loved. Don't give Doctor Tennant the satisfaction. Also, Tennant is a huge over-actor. His performance had about as much nuance as a Dalek's.
-

If Cushing was non-canon, then Daleks are non-canon. YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.
(Robo-men can stay non-canon, though. Those guys are idiots.)
-
How about the Rastan Robot?
-
Capaldi > (Smith = Eccleston) > Tennant
Um.... what?
Tennant just got the leftovers of a bad companion.
He and his companion weren't compatible. Eccleston was more compatible with his companion.
I loved Tennant way more than Smith. Smith was too political for me.
"Look guys, I know I've favored humanity, but suddenly aliens are more like animals and animals matter more than humans, go Peta" is not a good introduction to a Doctor.
Then they equated him with Jesus.
It wasn't until they got away from the political stuff and focused on the relationships between the characters that I liked the show more.
Tennant met Satan and was scared, making him more human.
Nothing Smith faced felt more serious than that.
And....
BBC considered ending the show in 2010 as they thought the show would fail without him

Rose was a fine companion. And so was Martha. And Donna. What is the common denominator? Doctor Tennant, who sucked.
Also, He never had a plan.
Seriously, name an example of a great plan in a Tenth Doctor episode. There isn't one. There's never a moment like you get with Eleven where you realize that he's been playing a misdirection game the whole time. Matt Smith's Doctor was a Machiavellian trickster, whereas Eccleston's Doctor approached situations like a soldier assessing the situation on the ground and reacting accordingly.
Ten, though, most of the time his solution to a problem is to pretend to be drunk or clumsy or silly, push a lot of buttons, and run away from the boom. He shares an M.O. with Bugs Bunny. His innate gift for quick thinking usually saves the day, but it's never planned that way. He's not a chessmaster. He's more like an idiot savant that has no idea what he's doing.QFT.
Also, he spent a lot of time whining and crying. He is apparently bipolar. How boring.
-
Martha
Ugh. I always found her switching between boring and grating. She really didn't have a character of her own until those few episodes in series 4 IMHO.
Fortunately, Donna made me forget her in like half an episode.

It's true, she was a little boring at first. Mostly because she wanted to get on Doctor Tennant, and he was like "No, my heart aches " But she did become a good character in her own right.
-
If Cushing was non-canon, then Daleks are non-canon. YOU CANNOT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.
I'm not saying he was non-canon. I'm just explaining the character Cushing played. He did not play a time lord. He played a human named Dr. Who.
And by the way, daleks showed up before Cushing. So I could have it both ways!

This video just crashes my phone every time I try to play it

That's not the actor.... that's the writers.
I thought we were discussing the actors, as indicated by actor name.
If we were discussing the characters, I would expect them to be named by number.
I suppose it's just a nuance of the character itself that created the ambiguity.
To clarify. I liked Tennant as an actor better.
He had more theatrical presence, whereas Smith just seemed a little ignorable until the writers gave him a clever plan plot twist, then he started with the theatrics.Had the actors swapped places, the show would have been better overall, during the 11th doctor's season, but likely would have never made it there with nothing holding up the 10th season.
Matter of fact, everything you blamed the 10th doctor for, the 11th doctor was the same way for the first few episodes, and every filler episode where he didn't have a companion.
Without a companion the 11th doctor is not just depressed, he's also useless.

That's why you were talking about Jesus? Makes sense...
I don't think there's a point separating the actor from the character, since all I care about is the end result. Tennant didn't bring the acting chops to the table, and his Doctor suffered for it. Hammy overacting is no substitute for nuance.
Quality
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC_jddH_0MI&t=3m1sHonestly, Rowan Atkinson did a better job than Tennant

Hammy overacting is no substitute for nuance.
You're talking about Doctor Who, not Masterpiece Theater.
If the script is as wacky as a typical Doctor Who script, I'd say hammy overacting is about a perfect fit.
"Man, I like this show about brainwashed humans-turned-into-pig-monsters and I like the lesbian lizard woman buried underground for 65 million years and the werewolf protected by British monk-ninjas trying to bite the Queen of England and the pill that makes fat people's bodies explode into toyetic rejected Pokemon monsters, but the guy playing the main character is just a BIT too hammy." Seriously!?
-
Capaldi, Eccleston, and Smith do a better job as the Doctor. Much better actors, and it shows in their work.
-
None of them are Tom Baker, who once did an entire long scene with a giant booger hanging out of his nose.
But of course the cliche is "the best Doctor Who actor is the one you were first introduced to" so there you go.
Anyway, Cushing was Grand Moff Tarkin, so he's got sci-fi chops you can't even imagine.

I used to have a good friend who, when asked what his favorite movie was, would always answer Stargate. (This was before the TV series.) The brilliance of this is that while Stargate is definitely not a good movie, it's perfectly feasible to believe that somebody somewhere considers it their favorite movie. When you pressed him, "what about Aliens? Star Wars? 2001: A Space Odyssey?" he'd just continue to claim that, no, Stargate was by far his favorite movie of all time. It was infuriating when he did this to people who didn't really get the concept of trolling. They'd get literally angry at it, "how can you consider Stargate your favorite movie? Are you saying it's a better movie than Star Wars!?" I was laughing but he was always steadfast and deadpan.
Anyway, the point I'm getting at here is Cushing is the best Doctor.

I was first introduced to Sylvester McCoy; however, my favourite is David Tennant.

Eccelston was my first, but I rank him #3.

Blasphemer!
We all know it's Flash! [A-aaah! Saviour of the Universe!]
Yes, I have to write it that way. There is just no way I can mention that name without that bit of the song.

BRIAN BLESSED, LOUDEST ACTOR EVER, STARRED IN FLASH SO YOU HAVE MADE A GOOD CHOICE!
He was also in an episode or two of Doctor Who. And he was the evil preacher in the 3-part pilot of Blakes 7, IIRC. Also Space: 1999.
He's no Peter Cushing, though.

Oh man, I loved him there.
I wonder if there are enough people who know it to justify a Blakes 7 thread.

Colin Baker was by far the saddest Doctor. All he wanted to do was play The Doctor on TV, but by the time he took over the role, the head of the BBC was determined to kill the series with budget cuts and random rewrites. So now everyone remembers him as this weird clown Doctor that got the series cancelled, but it wasn't his fault!
