Java finally got its shit right!

How many major versions has java had, exactly?
Is Java Micro Edition considered a major version?
-
Also, Discourse supports <small> but not <big>. Discoursistency!
Depends on what style you're using at the moment."Default Discourse" has
big { font-size: 28px; }
;"TDWTF Default" and "Widescreen+minimal" have
big { font-size: 14px; }
;@PJH, what's the deal yo?

4? There aren't even 4 versions of .NET in existence, as far as I am aware. (Are you counting Mono as one? Maybe?)
BECAUSE EVERYTHING SAID HERE HAS TO BE 100% LITERAL RIGHT?Counter blakey'd!

No, Java Micro Edition isn't considered a major version. It has the same version numbering as Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.

JAVA_HOME is worthless if the two different apps need two different versions of Java. I guess I can start making batch scripts to set the environment variable but....at this point Java is a piece of shit and should never be deployed to end users.
-
I guess I can start making batch scripts to set the environment variable but
Put a copy of the JRE in the directory for the app which requires the specific version, and have./jre/bin;
at the start of PATH.
-
You could increase the numbers if you want.
-
JAVA_HOME is worthless if the two different apps need two different versions of Java.
Not if you run the java executable via the full path and set the variable, both via a batch file. It's awkward, but it works.

What version is that at, anyways?
There are several thousand distributions of it, so it's hard to tell.
-
0.8, which follows 0.8. Apparently, v0.8 is going to be released soon

THAT WAS NEVER A PRODUCTION READY RELEASE YOU DICK

Not automatically patched JREs sounds like a minor disaster waiting to happen if said app handles external data.

I thought it needed a specific version? You can't keep a specific version and keep automatic updates.

Maybe I want Java 1.7 which is "current" but also specific and keep 1.6 global and default installed? :P
-
Java 1.7 which is "current"
1.8 is current.
also specific and keep 1.6 global and default installed?
-
I clearly specified that the team I was walking through a project needs the JDK 1.7 installed. They all rushed off to the HelpDesk to get it.
Two of them showed up with 1.8 and one showed up with 1.6. Thankfully 1.8 can compile to target 1.7 anyway.

Clearly you can see how much I keep up with it
Not that I want to...ever
Really fucking annoying SuperMicro's IPMI viewer is Java based.
