Canonical link is canonical
-
Just found this in the
<head>
of all pages on the Initrode site:<link href="http://www.initrode.com" rel="alternate" hreflang="co-FR" /> <link href="http://www.initrode.com" rel="canonical" />
Initrode called us because Google didn't index their site properly. The
canonical
link is supposed to help search engines use the correct URL for every page. Instead, all pages on this website told the bots that the homepage is the only correct URL. I don't even clown who did this?alternate
links should point out pages with the same content but in other languages. The Initrode site is mulitlingual, and it does switch language based on browser preferences. So having onealternate
link, to the homepage, in one language, is an insult.

No repro..

You may want to sort out that
Expires
header while you're digging around in there however...

That's because I fixed it
And in case this was not obvious to anybody, the company is not called Initrode.
Expires: -1
Ah, no I get this. It expired in-transit.

So I tried to explain over the phone what I found
Me: I'm sorry I can't explain how those shitty lines got there.
Them: Do you... do you think we got hacked?Well I actually suspect that this SEO-clown they hired added that. But I'll have to check whether he was given access. After similar experiences we've gotten retentive about giving file access to suchlikes.

Do you... do you think we got hacked?
Standard response from a non-technical user when something weird starts happening. A few years ago it would have been
Do you... do you think we got a virus?
I've had someone suggest a problem with end-of-day totals on a very simple, non-internet-connected POS system must have been a virus

Not impossible...
Do you work for Target?

Standard response from a non-technical user when something weird starts happening.
For a little while after the "have we got hacked" question, I was silent while my mind was racing to find a scenario where you get illegitimate access to a site and then decide to insert a wrong canonical tag. Then I realized the absurdity of the situation and said "no", even though "unlikely" would have been more correct.

A virus transmitted by barcodes?
-
barcodes
It wasn't that sophisticated. You entered items on the squishy keyboard and it printed an order for the kitchen (Restaurant tills)

Didn't know co-FR was a valid locale.
-
I also enjoy that phrase and will use it from now on.

>Do you... do you think we got a virus?
Back in 2000 I worked for a company with offices in multiple Central and South American countries. We got hit by the I Love You virus, and the central Exchange server did a good job of stripping the attachments so it couldn't propagate, but every once in a while for a few months someone from Uruguay or somewhere who apparently wasn't using AV would try to spread it again.
-
I remember the I Love You virus. One of our developers received an email with an attachment from a suspicious source and recognized it as a virus. Thinking he was being helpful, he forwarded the email (and attachment) to the whole company saying something like "If you see an email like this, don't open the attachment." Several people didn't read his message, they just saw an email from someone they knew and immediately opened the attachment.
-
Didn't know co-FR was a valid locale.
Me neither, but I will do anything to anonymize so I picked one at random.
-
I tried using ILOVEYOU to test our AV. So I copied it onto a network share (I'm the real ) and asked a colleague whether he could help testing.
So we want to see whether the AV on your machine scans exes on network drives. Please open
network drive
random shit
and thenloveyou
now let's NO DONT oh damns. Let me unplug that. Pretty fireworks though. That guy was so conditioned to click on anything looking like an exe, well, my fault.

Hey, it's a better story than the ten thousandth whineyrant about git from you.

Ah, no I get this. It expired in-transit.
So we can skip the ER and bring the stiff straight to the coroners?
EDIT: FECKING HELL DISCOURSE! WHY DID YOU HAVE THIS TOPIC MARKED AS UNREAD IF IT WAS FIVE MONTHS OLD?!
-
I think you may have time-oed a little bit there.
-
Because fbmac replied and deleted his post.

ohay, that explains why the thread was marked as having new posts. doesn't explain why discourse thought that the OP was the only post i had read, nor does it explain the lack of a necrotoaster.....

the lack of a necrotoaster.....
There was a post less than a week ago, so of course there's no toaster.
Though last time I noticed that effect, it was because there was no '5 months later'.

i suspect he was riffing on several people's recent habit of deleting posts
