had the same kind of UI fubar with Large Fonts
I haven't had these kinds of problems with the WPF programs I've developed.
But then again, I haven't done any kind of custom theming, because that's just not necessary for functional business software.
-
Interestingly Microsoft seems to have figured out the trick in Win8 or 8.1, because our application looks OK with Large Fonts on in that OS.
They don't do "large fonts" anymore, just DPI scaling. Actually I think it does both, but DPI scaling is the default now when you hit "make the text larger". (You have to hit "advanced" to find the font-specific option.)
It's taken OS makers a long time to learn that when all their programs are buggy pieces of shit, you should probably just lie to them about how big a pixel is.
-
lie to them about how big a pixel is.
For all the good our high resolution monitors are for, if we just end up lowering the resolution so we can see shit.
-
But four-kay is the future man!
Seriously, I understand filming in 4k. I can even get behind 4k monitors as you sit relatively close to them. Who the hell will see a difference between 4k and 1080p on a 30-inch or even 50-inch TV (watched from a reasonable distance for the screen size)?

TV nerds (will think they) will.

No theming, just providing the users the ability to scale the entire window up because many of them are Of A Certain Age and can't read the fonts. It has to be done this way for reasons that take a bit too much effort to Swype on my phone.
-

The UI is still exposed as "control the font size", though, IIRC, so that's how we refer to it, so we don't confuse our users.
-

The OS can still render fonts smoothly and any vector drawing commands smoothly.
Anything else, though, and you're better-off lying to the problem about how large a pixel is.

Who's "we"? Do you work at Microsoft?

"Zoom"
I mean I know, it's a risky proposition to refer to downscaling the DPI as zooming.
-
-
Of course not, I'm just always befuddled when people introduce the concept of "we" where it did not previously exist. Who is "we"?
It sounds like he's saying "we" is the people who choose the language to describe this feature, which would me "we" are working at Microsoft.
-
Unless it's royal we.
But we don't do that anymore.
ambiguous post is ambiguous
-
Who's "we"? Do you work at Microsoft?
No, I mean my company. Our application was written a long time ago when people had smaller monitors. One limitation of the language we use is that you can't use arbitrary fonts in a window; instead, there's a list in an ini file specifying a font name and size. Because of this, you can't arbitrarily scale (say) a button label. Instead, you (say) specify font #1 is 10pt Courier, and #2 is 12pt Courier, and when you enlarge the button, you switch from font 1 to font 2.
Yes it's actually pretty stupid but there's not much I can do about it. In any event, in this day of much larger monitors, a window that was originally about 640x480 with 10pt text doesn't look very good, and in older versions of Windows, font scaling or however we care to refer to it just doesn't have good results with Progress applications.
-
I mean I know, it's a risky proposition to refer to downscaling the DPI as zooming.
Look, even in 8.1 the slider basically says "make fonts smaller or larger." When your customer base has a lot of middle-aged office workers who've been using the app for 10 years, you don't say "oh, Marge, it's no longer 'font scaling', it's called 'zooming' now," especially when the slider still says "make fonts smaller or larger".
-
It sounds like he's saying "we" is the people who choose the language to describe this feature
No, "we" is the people at my company, when talking to our customers about this issue.
-
Yeah. Pro-tip? This Blakeyrat guy here? Not fucking telepathic.
-
I had been talking about an application I worked on.
-
Our application was written a long time ago when people had smaller monitors.
Can't you just rip out "dpiAware" from the app manifest and let Windows fix the problem for you?
-
app manifest
For reasons, that's not really something I can do. In any event, the work has been completed so there's no point in revisiting it, Windows 8 obviates it, not that we tell the customers that, and there was another point, but I forgot what it was.
-
I had been talking about an application I worked on.
And therefore...?
I should have been telepathic? I should have somehow known using my telepathic powers that you were part of a team when working on that application, and you'd suddenly switch to saying "we" at some point without ever bothering to explain to anybody who "we" was?
Lemme guess, you write documentation for EFL?
-
And therefore...?
And therefore, yes, you should have understood what I'm talking about, but since you're brain-damaged, I understand that you couldn't. It's a shame you feel the compulsion to shit over conversations and announce your mental defects, though.
I mean, what kind of dumb shit automatically guesses a developer works for Microsoft as opposed to working for someone else? They're not THAT big.
-
I mean, what kind of dumb shit automatically guesses a developer works for Microsoft as opposed to working for someone else?
HOW WOULD I KNOW?
You came up with "we" out of FUCKING NOWHERE! It sounded like you were talking about a Microsoft UI element developed by Microsoft!
Knowing that you worked on an application doesn't imply there's a "we". A lot of individuals work on applications. (Which was my point with the "therefore...?" that you seemed to utterly miss.)
I'm not going to take the blame for not being telepathic. You're in the wrong here, and you know it. You can't just introduce this magical "we" concept where it didn't previously exist and expect people to know what the fuck you mean.
-
we disagree
-
HOW WOULD I KNOW?
I wouldn't expect you to know, with your specific form of brain damage.
-
Good; then stop acting like I'm a freak for asking you to explain yourself.
If you have to consider your audience brain damaged to communicate clearly, then fine, whatever.
-
If you have to consider your audience brain damaged to communicate clearly
Audience in general, no. You in particular, yes. I mean, that's the persona you choose to project, one that's incapable of deductive reasoning, guesswork, or metaphor. Why do you expect people NOT to get bored of it and refuse to waste their time with you?
-
then stop acting like I'm a freak for asking you to explain yourself.
No, no, you're a freak because of the way your persona acts. If you were a real person, the way you switch on and off the psychotic flamage would suggest you need to spend an extended period in a mental hospital.
-
Good; then stop acting like I'm a freak for asking you to explain yourself.
Did you read his previous posts? I did and the context seemed obvious. Did you go back to look at the reply chain, even? Or just start ranting?
-
Would you rather me just assume what people are saying, like people do to me, or to ask for clarification?
Look, you type words, I try to understand them.
-

Are you saying that we should ignore everything in a conversation that came before a particular post? You must be a hoot at dinner parties.
Look, you type words, I try to understand them.
LIES

No, and also i have no idea what you're talking about.
Quoting on winphone is impossible.

It's possible; it's just incredibly fucking awkward…

No you don't, and everyone understands that.

I don't think anything is a barrier to his complaining.

So we'll agree discourse sucks, again, as usuall, is TR , we can go on with our lives and read the last couple posts/whatever people are replying to to give context?
