I've never understood the "K" notation. This is a lot like the "2h" date/time format, where you try to make something pretty, but you cause data to be lost. Please get rid of it.
-
Well, when you're getting to the K level of things, the substrata of data tends to be less useful anyway.
If you're already at 15,000, does it matter significantly if you're at 15100 or 15200 or 15300?
-
This depends entirely on your OCD related to prime numbers.
-
Probably not, but what's wrong with just showing the stupid number?
-
I much prefer to know there's X.Y K posts, or X.YK likes rather than 15678 posts, 22435 likes
It's a space thing. The large numbers start crowding the columns, making it difficult to tell which column it's in.

Make it a user option then.

Please. It's 15.9 × 103 guys. Every other format is for pussies.

If you're having issues fitting 6 characters versus 1, you definitely have some formatting issues...
-
Can we make another user option too?
In spirit of X of Y posts (or just X, if > 999)
Change the progress bar to be percent based!
10% through topic
50% through topic
100% through topic...Filed under: No. Don't actually do this.

Are those kiloposts or kibiposts?

I want all my numbers on this forum to be in base 7

@sam I'm blaming you.

If we're switching bases, we gotta go for e. It is the most efficient after all.

I thought 15.5x210 would have been more appropriate for on here....

Oh good, next up someone's gonna file a bug report about floating point errors.

What FP error?

Yes, this is a minor bug. @neil can you make sure Suggested Topics uses our standard "15.9k" style formatting number shortener on likes, to be consistent?
-
No, I disabled any and all forms of email communication, immediately.
I get the blue popup over the IM window looking thing.

String theorists and their extra dimensions nobody can prove, at a guess.
I'm looking forward to the announcement that it's all been a big mix up and that string theorists have been doing all their work in base 2.
11 dimensions? Shit, we forgot time...

In other news, there are way too many number base jokes going around here at the moment.

In the wrong thread too! What has this forum come to? I expect higher standards here!
