@obeselymorbid It would be better if they just made it an intersection. It really sucks to drive through, though I suppose there is some benefit to filling up the roadway in the circle with cars. They've done ridiculous things with circles, pretty much all of which have lights, some have inner and outer circles! At least, the most famous, Dupont Circle, does:
Note, it has lights at most (all?) streets and the main street, Connecticut Ave, also has a tunnel that goes under the circle if you're driving through. FYI, this was where Jason Lee's character dies in Enemy of the State.

Spoilers, dude!
Hmm, judging by the fact I gave it 10 stars on IMDB, I must have seen it.
But neither your tunnel death mention, nor the plot description ring any bells.I guess I'll have to watch it again, but this time I won't be able to enjoy it because I'll spend all the time anticipating the tunnel death scene. Hope you are happy.
-
@obeselymorbid It's the one where they take a video of a paper bag, build a 3D model of it and deduce the contents. From a single 640x480 video camera at 15 FPS.
-
@Onyx Now I certainly have to watch that.

Clearly, the building was moving more slowly than the van, so it should have yielded to it.

Right after he slips the game into Will Smith's lingerie bag he runs out of the store and takes off. I think he maybe falls into the road going into / coming out of the tunnel.

As for roundabouts, I agree, even a simple two-lane one has people driving according to however they think it should work.
Roundabouts should be illegal. And designing one with multiple lanes should be punishable by death.

Du-uh! They haven't learnt Python yet.
I'm more concerned about the misleading
setGoal
method name. Makes it sound like they are overriding the value of a single "Goal" property a couple of times.

@Zecc indeed, should be
addGoal

If they knew how to write that in python then "Learn Python" probably wouldn't be a goal.

Given the other example where the first word (
Var
) was capitalized, I'm willing to bet this was typed in Word and then pasted to the web...

-
@Zecc Well, if it's goals, then shouldn't it be Prolog instead of Python?
is_goal(make_varsity) :- true. is_goal(get_elected) :- true. is_goal(learn_python) :- true. succeed(X) :- is_goal(X), accomplished(X).
The
accomplished()
predicate is left as an exercise for the goal-setter.

@Tsaukpaetra said in βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

There are quite a few places where that's been done, but that particular one is among the worst because of the sheer volume of traffic it carries. It also used to not have the slip roads so that even vehicles taking the short paths would still have to go onto the roundabout, and I think at that stage it also lacked traffic lights. Unfortunately, about the only way to fix that mess properly is to rip the whole lot out and put an entirely new junction in, but traffic levels make that a difficult taskβ¦
As I said, it's a big part of why I don't drive to work.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that.
Still, the so-called Magic Roundabout beats it by a long, long margin...

Bad idea: getting on a container ship whose owners went bankrupt:
Sadly bngbng quoted part of an interview with her where she demonstrates she's not very smart--or, more charitably, probably doesn't know a lot about economics.
The fact that nobody is rushing to buy these containers off of us shows that they cannot be needed that desperately in Asia. In some ways they feel very valuable (surely some contain food?!) but apparently they are worthless.
The contents of the containers don't belong to the shipping company.

I don't get your reasoning. True the ship can't sell them, but someone shipped those containers. That's their money trapped in a shipping container on a ship that can't offload.
Insured maybe? But what idiot insurer would pay off on this? If a bonding insurer, why not pick up the port fees and save as much of the bond as possible?
I vote with her: lack of interest by the
container ownersanyone suggests not much value in the containers.Declare the ship salvage, I guess.

The ship can't dock. How do you propose to get the containers off of it? Those things require large cranes.
Edit: I don't know what the procedure is in a case like this, either. If you click through to the Vanity Fair article, all the crew seems to have expected this to happen, so it makes you wonder why they even sent the ship out in the first place.

In Dwarf Fortress, you wouldn't solve world hunger, you'd just end up with one infinitely tall stack of hamburgers that people would take turns eating from.
Even though each hamburger is finite, the fact that there are infinitely many hamburgers means that eating one hamburger from the stack is infinitely satisfying.
-
@CoyneTheDup
You can't legally touch them. Even if they are in Port on the shipping companies property. Once bankruptcy is declared everything on property is locked down until it is cleared by the court, practically the people the court appointed to handle the bankruptcy.

They seem to be mostly empty, heading back to be filled.

@Luhmann said in βπ THE BAD IDEAS THREAD:

I thought that might be the case, too. Presumably everything has to be accounted for so that the bankrupt company doesn't steal its customers' goods (or some of its own, to sell off before the process.)
-
@boomzilla Interesting. A few years ago I read something that said the Chinese were leaving a LOT of containers here in the US and not bothering to round-trip them.
-
@FrostCat I imagine that eventually no one will keep them all and the ship's gotta go back for another load anyways.
-
@boomzilla True. And with the world economy not exactly going gangbusters, there's probably an actual cost at this point to leaving all that material overseas instead of just making more.
-

They actually reuse those in significant quantity? I'm pretty sure I've heard it's cheaper for them to collect the scrap value in the US and manufacture brand-new containers in China than it is to ship empty containers back.

I'm sure that has happened, but the scale of container traffic is so big I'm sure there have always been some empties going back. I suspect whoever reported that gave an inaccurate picture of just how many were being scrapped.
Googling around, managing empties seems to be a major concern of the shipping companies who own them.
