So this should be pretty self-explanatory.
My current Mech is an Ebon Jaguar. I'll put up some pictures of the thing and it's loadout once the game finishes patching. Currently working towards a Timber Wolf, buuuuut I'm poor still. heh.
So, @blakeyrat, what do you have?
-
@Erufael Why are you mentioning me you dick!!!
-
@Erufael Seriously though.
I like almost exclusively chicken-leg mechs. Which is a problem when it comes to assaults, because all chicken-leg assaults are shit. I currently have a 3-set of:
- Locust (including the Pirate's Bane, perhaps the most overpowered mech per its weight class in the game-- since it's weight class is 20 tons this doesn't really help much)
- ShadowCat
- Ebon Jag
- Catapult (Including my Founder's)
- Stalker (Including Misery, the only one which is... kind of competent at being an assault mech? Kind of.)
I have had in the past a 3-set of Ravens, but I sold all of them except the one with ECM. (3L IIRC.)
Loose mechs, I have:
- Jenner-D (usually with no engine, because I don't like it much)
- Raven-3L (fully leveled because I had a 3-set in the past)
- Centurion-AH
- Cataphract-Muromets (I honestly don't remember when or why I bought this, rarely play it but I keep it outfitted just in case)
- Thunderbolt-9SE (from Steam heavy pack)
- Timber Wolf-C (from Steam heavy pack)
- Atlas-S(L) (Rarely play it, but I keep it outfitted just in case)
The Jenner, Centaurion and Atlas I got as part of that charity pack MWO did back in 2014 or whenever, you'd have to have been stupid to not buy that pack. ($10 to get an awesome stable of mechs, plus 100% goes to cancer charities!?)
Lately I've been playing mostly the Locusts or Jags, and occasionally trying to make my non-Misery Stalkers stop sucking. (People bitch at you if you spend 85 tons of Stalker 5M to toss LRMs, but those people have never tried to build a 5M that does anything else. Crummy mech.) The ShadowCat is possibly the most overpowered mech in the game right now, but I'm not really a huge fan of actually driving them.
My absolute #1 favorite is the old standby, the Catapult K2, possibly the best all-around mech in all of MechWarrior. Definitely the best Inner Sphere mech.
-
@blakeyrat if I may, how do you like the Jags? I really like mine, as long as I can keep the bad guys from blowing off my torsos. And when I stop fucking with the loadout long enough... Currently this is the loadout:
I liked my old Summoner, but found it to be a pretty situational Mech, and the armor just wasn't good for trying to brawl. But it didn't really have the hardpoints or slots for good long ranging, either, unless you only wanted 2 PPC's.
What about the Cat-K2 do you like?
-
@Erufael To answer your question, A Tale Of Two Mechs:
My Catapult K2:
My Jag-A:
I purposefully built that Jag to match my favorite K2 config. (But using Clan equipment, natch.)
-
Both weigh 65 tons.
-
The Jag runs 87.1 compared to 80.4 in the K2.
-
The Jag has a firepower rating of 38, the K2 30.
-
The Jag has 403 armor, the K2 412.
-
The Jag has a heat management rating of 1.35, the K2 1.3.
-
The Jag has 5 tons of AC/5 ammo compared to 3 tons on the Cat.
In short, in LITERALLY EVERY MEASURE (except a tiny differential in armor) the Ebon Jag-A is a better mech than the K2. The addition of Clan mechs kind of stole the K2's crown-- I mean that's kind of the point, the Clan equipment is better, it just costs 3x as much. Since the Jag is basically the "Clan Catapult", there ya go.
The Jag's also a more versatile mech. Your loadout can't be replicated in any Catapult variant, none of them have that many weapon ports.
However, the K2 doesn't have an XL engine (so no side-torso engine crit slots). And some Catapults can take jump jets, although the K2 specifically can not.
That said, I still like driving the K2 better, frankly. Possibly because I'm more used to it. Possibly because it's been my favorite mech since Mechwarrior 3. (The first MW game I seriously played.) Possibly because it's about 1/3rd physically smaller (now that they've fixed the frankly fucked-up Catapult scaling they used to have) than the Jag so it's a bit harder to target, not sure.
-
-
@blakeyrat I must say, I do like the smaller profile of the Cat'. I may detour my grind to the Timber and pick one of these up... I almost have enough for the K2 right now.
I like the triple UAC/5s in my Jag, but the small lasers have such a disproportionately short range, so it makes it a bit more difficult to use all the weapons effectively.
Side note, the Catapult was in MW3? I don't remember that, but its also been soo many years. lol. That one is still my fav MW game, besides Online.
-
@Erufael The re-modeling of the Catapult is the best thing MWO has done in months. Not just because they fixed the size, but it looks so nice and sleek now. I wasn't sure whether to mention it or not, but frankly the K2 is simple a better-looking, more attractive mech. The Founder's is even better because it has that nice streamlined nose, but I have mine configured as a LRM boat right now.
EDIT:
@Erufael said in MechWarrior Online Thread:

Oop, you're right. I must have been thinking of 4. Ehwell.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah that's one thing about the Jag... The model doesn't adhere to any of the traditional designs of the 'Mech. I loved the look of it in MW3.
-
@Erufael The Jag's arms are also wide as hell and sometimes get caught on shit and get you stuck. The downsides of an actual physics engine.
-
Random note... For some reason I now have all of the Omnipods I ever bought from the Nova, Mad Dog, and Summoner I had in my inventory.... No idea why...
-
@Erufael Why wouldn't they be? Omnipods are just parts like any other. You can sell them if you want, make some $$$.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah but that's the thing. I never kept any of them, I sold them all. I should have mentioned that. heh.
-
@Erufael Hitting the SELL button doesn't bring up the selling dialog... Hmm...
They also all have a quantity of 0, I guess that's why. They're taunting me because they know if I could sell them I'd instantly have that K2. lol
-
@Erufael Keep in mind to build the K2 I have you need to spend probably another 750,000 - 1m on the Endo, Heatsink, and Ferro upgrades. I don't think the K2 comes with any of those stock.
EDIT: there's an event going on this weekend where you will get, among other things, a bonus 500,000 cbills if you earn 2m cbills.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah I figured on at least a million on upgrades. The stock engine is also only a 260, whereas you have a 300. Of course I can live without that until I get the other stuff first.
Thanks for the heads up about the event, also!
-
@Erufael Yeah engines are expensive as fuck.
-
@blakeyrat Indeed. One of the reasons I like Clan 'Mechs. Well, besides the fact that I've always liked Clan 'Mechs... hehe. I know that the up front costs are higher to compensate not having to upgrade all that shit, but it still feels nicer to have a fresh Mech off the line and not have to worry about getting another 4mil just to get the good stuff.
-
@Erufael Clan mechs are ok, but usually with those you don't even have the option of upgrading the engine, or dropping jump jets you don't need, or what-not.
Also Clan lights suck, although that's mostly because the ShadowCat is the best medium in the game. Still, there's no excuse for the Adder and Kit Fox being SO GODDAMNED SLOOOOOW.
-
Trying a new Stalker build:
I was using a 4 ER Large Las build, but the problem is they (and required heatsinks) take up so much weight I had to down-gun to a LBX10.
Since I really wanted an AC/20 I started from there and build around it, ended up with a triple Large Pulse Laser build. Had to ditch the AMS, but AMS only reduces missile damage by maybe 20%, so not a huge deal.
Played one round with it, it did pretty damned good. Ran out of AC/20 ammo, per usual though. 21 rounds is... not enough.
-
@blakeyrat said in MechWarrior Online Thread:

Ouch. I ran into that problem the last time I tried anything with a Clan LBX-20.
-
@Erufael The Clan's normal AC/20 is so badass, I wouldn't take a LBX-20. LBX is good in some situations, and great if you've stripped the armor off a mech (hey, here's like 15 chances to get a crit in less than .1 seconds!) But you'd be better off in general with the normal AC/20 I'd think.
-
@blakeyrat I think that was my conclusion as well. I'm always torn though between the AC's and UAC's for more dakka dakka. But the jamming of the UAC is a pain in the ass.
-
@Erufael That is one thing about the Clan UAC, they seem to jam about twice as often. Nothing's worse than having to wait to clear a jam.
-
@blakeyrat This Stalker just put an AC/20 round through the cockpit glass of a Locust, destroying it instantly natch, in what is frankly the best shot I've ever made in this game.
-
@blakeyrat Daaaamn! Nice shot!
-
@Erufael Well the Locust made the #1 Locust mistake, which is never run directly towards your opponent because it makes it way easier for them to line-up a shot. Still proud of it.
-
I just managed to get 464,060 C-Bills last match. No idea how. This is a new record for me by far!
-
@Erufael That's nice. Must have knocked off a lot of limbs.
-
@blakeyrat Could be. It was Conquest at the HPG Manifold, and I was in the basement. The bad guys decided to try to come in one at a time. Heh.
-
Doing good on Stalkers today.
I wonder if the math works out to make a dual-gauss Catapult K2. Without downsizing the engine TOO much...
If only there were a Stalker frame with ballistics in those high-up weapon slot, that would be a demon with gauss.
-
@blakeyrat It'll work if I can manage an XL250 engine... expensive upgrade though. Only 40 rounds, 20 shots of ammo, but managed 2 med las for a backup weapon... hm.
Trying to decide whether to hit the "buy" button... stupid XL engine costs.
EDIT: damn this is pissing me off because I do own a XL275 but its just a bit too heavy to pull it off.
Maybe my raven has an engine I can use...
EDIT EDIT: I have a buddy who sometimes drives a dual-AC/20 K2. That's actually easier to build, go figure-- AC/20s only take up 14 tons. ... actually nevermind, the AC/20s don't allow the side-torso crit slots XL engines require, with a standard engine the build doesn't work. Gauss is a bit better.
-
@blakeyrat Is there any tonnage left for backup weapons on the dual-AC/20 build? And what engine would that take?
-
@Erufael My friend is insane, so probably no backup weapons.
I'd guess he has a 175, maybe 200 in it. Standard, as the AC/20s preclude XL engines.
There is a bit of psychological warfare involved, as the LAST thing you expect to see out of the nozzle of a K2 is a Gauss or AC/20 round. Partially because the weight situation is so stacked against it, but also because the game art doesn't program barrels that large on the Catapult frame (so they both visually look like AC/5.) It's not like an Assault with a AC/20 where you can see the big-ass cannon barrel sticking out.
-
@blakeyrat Ahh, I see. A 175 or 200?! Jeez, I feel slow with a 260 standard!
-
@Erufael Oh yeah. It's glacial. I think he plays it more as a "OMG I can't believe you can fit dual AC/20s into a K2!" than a serious mech build.
BTW, if you ever see a Catapult K2 with no lasers in the "ears", you should expect shenanigans from the ballistics. "Huh, that's weird-- why does that K2 have a dummied-out energy slo-- OH SHIT RUN!"
-

hahahahahaha I will keep that in mind! I can't wait to upgrade to double heat sinks in mine. Those four med lasers really heat up... I'm not used to that, being from Clan 'Mechs. Well, not used to the heat going away that slow, that is.
-
@Erufael The one I pictured towards the top of the thread, 4x medium laser, 2x AC/5 is probably the most practical K2 build. But it's a fun mech to play around with and do weird things.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah I usually start with a build from online, the decide to
tweakcompletely redo it, which is one reason why I'm always broke.
-
@blakeyrat Is the Marauder in this game? I only ever played one of the ancient 80s-era MW games...and pen-and-paper a couple of times--but I always thought the Marauder looked cool.
Old-school, that is:
-
@blakeyrat said in MechWarrior Online Thread:

They fixed it when they remodeled the Cat!
The AC/20 and Gauss now have their trademark barrels on Cats.
-
-
@blakeyrat Damn, that doesn't look ANYTHING like the MAD-3R I remember...nor does the 3R thumbnail on your screenshot.
-
@FrostCat Yeah well the original art for the Catapult looked like this:
IMO MWO does a pretty damned good job making actual machines of of those crap ink drawings.
-

This, with a few exceptions. (Ebon Jag...)
-
-
@blakeyrat I was thinking more the MW3 look.
-
@blakeyrat I spent the moneys, build this mech, played a round-- it kicked quite a bit of ass. 20 shots is enough if you're careful with your aim.
Limitations: VERY crappy vertical field of fire with all my guns nose-mounted. If someone's more than 20 degrees above me, I'm useless.
-
Thinking of re-buying my Mad Dog or Summoner for a SRM build. It was fun in the Summoner. I sold it cuz money. >.< And now, I still have no money. Wooo.
-
@Erufael That emote totally is not what I was going for.
-
@Erufael You weren't going for "I'm having a tough time squeezing out this poop"?
