@FrostCat Mmm no, not quite.
-
@blakeyrat SO THE GAUSSCAT. Findings:
- I only either do REALLY WELL with this Cat or REALLY AWFUL, there is no mediocre.
- When I do really well, it invariably runs out of ammo before the round is up. Not sure if I can do anything about that.
- The Gauss requires basically the entire head of the mech to be in the open; you can't peek over hills like you'd be able to do in a similar build on a Jagermech. In fact, for this use, I'd say the Cat is pretty much inferior to a similarly-configured Jagermech any day.
- It's still fun to play so fuck all that. Plus Jagermechs are ugly.
-
@blakeyrat When firing AC's, do you shoot them all at once, or chain-fire them?
-
@Erufael Depends on how many I have and how big they are.
AC/2's I'd tend to chain-fire to keep up a constant cockpit shake in the enemy and because misses aren't that costly. If you've ever been on the receiving end of a Kodiak firing 4-6 AC/2s in chainfire, it's quite an experience.
An AC/10 or bigger I'd definitely group fire because if you miss you're out a lot of tonnages, relatively speaking.
AC/5 is somewhere inbetween. If I have two of them, I group-fire. If I had 3 or more, I'd probably chain fire.
-
@blakeyrat Additionally: 90% of the time when I died, it's because my Gauss was hit and exploded. Which is enough to take out a Cat, a heavier mech might survive that. Sigh.

The downsides of an actual physics engine.
First world problems.
-
@blakeyrat AND AGAIN. The Gausscat is as delicate as a Raven, but without the speed to make up for it. Sigh.
Ok let's move on to more weird Cats. How about... single AC/20? Maybe?
-
@blakeyrat That sounds like a horrible idea. lmao. Would love to see how that turns out.
ETA: Oh, you managed to keep the lasers. Hm.
-
@Erufael Well a single super-heavy ballistic instead of 2 super-heavy ballistics lets me re-equip the 300 engine and up-laser to mediums instead of smalls. It's basically the original mech I posted but the dual AC/5s + ammo replaced by a single AC/20 and much less ammo.
I still have a weapon with an immense number of crit slots that, if crit, would easily take out the entire mech-- but at least only on the left side this time, haha. Right side towards enemy.
I just took it out on a test run and ended up solo-killing a Timberwolf and a Stalker and doing substantial damage to an Adder. So far it's batting WAY over its weight class.
-
-
@blakeyrat That's a sexy paintjob.
-
@Erufael It's just solid glossy black. I only did it to make the "mini-Misery" joke. I'm going to paint it back to the orange tiger stripes.
-
@blakeyrat Well, I'm stuck with just the default yellow-ish thing, and the blood red I got from some event a while back. xD
-
There's doing another personal challenge this weekend, also doing rankings like last week but with light mechs instead of mediums.
If you log into the website, those tables update in real-time. (Ish. 15 minute delay I think.)
-
@blakeyrat Thanks for the heads-up!
-
UrbanMech
Pros:
- Cheap (only about 1 mil cbills)
- Only mech with a full 360 degree torso twist
Cons:
- Slow
- Ugly
- Shitty weapon mounts
- Shitty armor
- Turns out 360 torso twist isn't actually as useful as you'd assume it would be for a light mech, especially a slow light mech with crappy armor (the locust's 126 degree torso twist is more than enough)
Ugh. There's 1.3 million cbills down the drain. SELL SELL SELL.
-
I was going to suggest a RAC/10, but then remembered that it's set in 3051.
Maybe an ARROW-4? :-) Meh, playing exclusively as FS is not much fun.
Filed Under: not sure if they have them in the game anyway.
-
I haven't played myself since it was in Beta, mainly because I only have a Thinkpad T-410 running Linux right now, and even if there was a Linux version, and Linux didn't blow for games, playing a video game on most Thinkpads is full of suck.
OK, I took a look at the wiki, and yeah, a lot of the less common CBT weapons aren't available. Thankfully, this includes hatchets and swords, which let's face it are only useful to impress the crowds on Solaris. No Infernos, either, those can be a nightmare to deal with. It does mention that the Arrow-4 is something that might be added some time in the future, along with the mech-mounted version of the Long Tom.
Rising sun artwork on Yen-lo-Wang: critical research FAIL. OTOH, so are the names and official crests for Draconis Combine and Cappellan Confederation (it seems likely that the cultures got reversed by FASA somewhere along the line, much as the FedSuns and Lyrans did on the map after the first ed), so it's a hot mess across the board.
Hmmn, they don't have a DW-WM in the hero mechs? shrug Probably come out as DLC eventually. Oh, wait, all of the Hero mechs are IS (or SL, like the Stalker and Orion), I guess that makes sense given that it takes place in early part of the Clan Invasion.
-
@blakeyrat Well, look at it this way: You wasted a lot fewer C-Bills than I do in a week. lmao
-
@Erufael Still working on getting a Summoner. Then decided to go back to laser-vomit EBJ. So there went 1-1.2mil right there. Need ~14mil just for the 'Mech, now at 3.2mil.
-
Splurged and bought a Jester with the MCs I had laying around:
Configured it like this:
Look at the speed on that bitch, that's one fast Cat. (Still only puts it on-par with the Ebon Jag, alas, but still. Fast.)
Might ditch the AMS for a couple more tons of heatsinks.
-
Just had a match where one of our lights got behind the enemy team on Polar Highlands. So what do they do? They all turn around! We slaughtered them.
-
@Erufael A lot of players are easy to kite (like with a dumb MMO AI) and you'll see like 5 heavy and assault mechs chasing after a Raven like idiots. It's stopped surprising me.
-
I do this every time... I can't decide if I want to re-grab the Mad Dog or the Summoner first.
ETA: Either way it's likely to start out as pretty much a SRM boat. @blakeyrat do you have any insight here?
-
@Erufael I don't like either of those mechs.
I was going to say for an SRM boat the ideal is a mech with lots of missile launchers but no doors covering them, but both of your options (I believe) have no doors. (Missile doors are great for LRMs but useless for SRMs. Even in my LRM mechs I usually keep them locked-open.)
Between the two I'd go with the Mad Dog because the weapon loadout is balanced on either side of the cockpit but I really have no strong preference.
EDIT: something like this build https://www.mechspecs.com/threads/mdd-p-srm-trolley-6x-csrm6-a-2x-cerml.7471/ but replace some ammo with 4x mlas instead of 2x, which I believe is possible on that chassis. The downside is your close-in support ammo-less weapons (the lasers) are on the arms and could be blown-off before your main weapon, which could be a problem late in a round if your SRM ammo were low or out.
EDIT EDIT: Oh they're both Clan mechs. Clan don't use missile doors at all, AFAIK. They're also both Omnis, so the variants don't matter, you can just mix-and-match limbs as needed. That's nice.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah the arms definitely don't last on the Mad Dog. :/ The Summoner is more tankier if you can spread the damage, but it also has the problem of all your weapons on the arm. No energy weapons can be torso mounted on that thing.
Really the worst part of the Summoner is the shit weapon options. You hardly get any slots to actually put weapons in. On the other hand, it has jump jets.
-
@Erufael Jump jets are not going to help a SRMboat very much, I don't think. Not a heavy one at least.
-
@blakeyrat True, but knowing me I'm gonna prolly end up trying to stick a PPC on it eventually. Hm. I wonder if a PPC would fit with 3 SRM-6's and ammo... But that's prolly a terrible idea.
ETA: My more successful Summoner build last time around had a pair of small lasers on one arm, a UAC in the right torso, and SRM-6's (3) everywhere else.
-
@Erufael I wouldn't put a PPC on a mech unless I could shoulder-mount it. Personally.
If it's on the end of an arm (assuming it's not a shoulder-mounted arm, like in a Jager) you'd be better off with a large pulse laser with the same weight and roughly same heat. LPLs have no minimum range; PPCs are useless up close.
ER PPCs are great for sniping, but only on a mech where you can peek up over a hill, take a shot, then duck down again. Right now that means: Catapult, Stalker, Jager, Ebon Jaguar (if you take the right variant) and... that's about it. And only really the Stalker and Jager are built for that use-case specifically.
-
@blakeyrat Good point. A pair of mediums on that arm would likely be even better since its even less weight, and is more in line with the range of the SRM's.
....Did i really just talk myself into spending even more time trying to save another 4+ mil to buy the Summoner?
ETA: Also, PPC's have a min range? That would explain a few things...
-
@Erufael http://mwo.gamepedia.com/PPC
Scroll down to the chart at the bottom with all the energy weapons, and you see that compared to a LPL the only thing a PPC gives you is more range.
And yeah, normal PPCs do no damage at less than 90 meters. ER PPCs have no minimum.
-
@blakeyrat said in MechWarrior Online Thread:

Ahh, okay. I've been using Clan so long and they only have ER-PPCs. lol
-
@Erufael Oh yeah. I'm still not entirely used to the Clan stuff, most of my mechs are still IS.
I'm thinking of buying a set of Kodiaks when they come out for cbills.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah Kodiaks have some sweet dakka-dakka. Being a heavy driver, I don't really fear them, but I do have a good deal of respect for them. Especially when I'm in front of one.
-
@Erufael I'm kind of tempted to grab that King Crab with all the ballistics, I've seem some builds on those which are just insane. They're relatively cheap too, only about 11 mil cbills.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah those are really nice, too. They seem a lot more armored to me than a Kodiak, with comparable firepower. Nasty.
-
@Erufael I just hate their horrible cockpit. It looks like a corporate suite at a baseball stadium.
EDIT: oh man people who bought the more expensive Founder's package than I did got that Crab as a loyalty bonus back when it came out. Sigh. Although I got an Atlas AS-7 so I guess I can't complain.
-
@blakeyrat Well, think of it this way: The King Crab is currently 35% off, so around ~6mil.
-
@Erufael Oh shit right, I forgot the Assault sale/ladder started today. Maybe I'll pick one up. I think I have a few extra garage slots.
I wonder what the Stalker ladder will look like, maybe I'll give it a go. I skipped the Medium and Light ones.
-
@blakeyrat I haven't been paying attention, but has there been one of these events every week for the past few? I don't seem to recall a heavy one.
-
@Erufael They haven't done heavy yet. Presumably that's next, since they've done every other weight class.
I wish you could buy the chassis "pre-stripped" and get a discount. Like 1.5 million of the purchase price of that Crab is going towards those AC/20s I'm going to immediately sell, haha.
-
@blakeyrat That would be really cool. Usually end up selling half the stock weapons anyway. lmao
-
I think I've come to a decision. Get the Mad Dog now since I almost have enough C-Bills, then start saving immediately in anticipation for a heavy 'Mech sale to hopefully grab a Summoner.
-
@blakeyrat I seem to recall a MW2: Mercs walkthrough/player's guide which repeatedly used the phrase, "...and for the Urbanmech pilots, congratulations for surviving this far into this document!" Starting in the first paragraph.
OTOH, Sophianna, the friend who showed me that, always liked to keep a lance of Urbies in her regiment for city fighting. And she would paint the miniatures as soda cans.
-
@blakeyrat If you couldn't tell, I seem to enjoy pain. Why else would I do this. lol

@blakeyrat Damn, that doesn't look ANYTHING like the MAD-3R I remember...nor does the 3R thumbnail on your screenshot.
FASA (the original distributor of Mechwarrior) didn't use the model for the Marauder anymore after they were subject to a lawsuit, due to similarities with the 'mechs from the anime series Macross. It's not exactly clear who stole from whom (or if both parties were sold the designs from the same guy without their mutual knowledge) but due to a settlement, details are sparse.
The Marauder wasn't the only victim, though. It also affected:
Locust, Stinger, Wasp, Valkyrie, Ostscout, Phoenix Hawk, Shadow Hawk, Griffin, Wolverine, Thunder Bolt, Ostroc, Ostsol, Rifleman, Crusader, Archer, Warhammer, BattleMaster, Marauder II, Goliath, Scorpion, Locust IIC, Phoenix Hawk IIC, Griffin IIC, Shadow Hawk IIC, Rifleman IIC, Warhammer IIC, the "original" Longbow, and the Marauder IIC.
Still have the source books from the time before that :)

That one just recently made it into Online. I tend to call it the Veritech. xD
-
@Erufael Mad Dog get:
Just need a few more c-bills for the last two lasers.
-
@Rhywden Considering how shitty the original line art was, I can imagine the judge just shrugged and said, "I guess?"
