@Magus well, now NodeBB thinks that's a local URL. Try clicking it.
-
@anotherusername Right, because I linked it to localhost port 80. Have five s.
-
@Magus well if NodeBB isn't smart enough to figure out that localhost isn't what.thedailywtf.com on my computer, I'd consider that a bug in its link handling. And I'm not seeing where it's clever or funny enough to be considered a joke.
I see what you did, I'm just not sure how it was relevant. Especially as a reply to my post about the
:
syntax.
-
@anotherusername NodeBB has nothing to do with it. Localhost is always localhost. It is always relative to whatever tries to open it. TYL.
-
@Magus I already knew what localhost is. I don't think you're understanding what I'm trying to say: localhost and what.thedailywtf.com are completely different links that will go to completely different locations on the overwhelming majority of computers (i.e. any computer that isn't what.thedailywtf.com's server).
Although it was 127.0.0.1 in your original post, but in most cases there's no practical difference between 127.0.0.1 and localhost.
edit: then again, you didn't include
http://
, so it was basing the URL relative tohttps://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/14468/til-about-the-dark-arts-of-html/
. Was that the joke?

@aliceif what language is the second example supposed to be?
C#
-
@anotherusername You keep talking about some sort of joke. Perhaps you mean yourself?
-
@Magus said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
You keep talking about some sort of joke.
I didn't know there was one, until you said that I ed it.
-
@anotherusername isn't always about jokes. In this case, it refers to the fact that it took you at least two posts of me saying explicitly that I did it for you to almost take it in, but then you got distracted and thought something else was important.
-
@Magus I understood from your post "It was easy, I just typed
[http://VB.NET](127.0.0.1:80)
" that you did it deliberately... after that, I was trying to figure out why.
-
@anotherusername Cool?

@accalia Ha, except Bing apparently doesn't like that either.

oh. uploads are broken apparently..... @BEN_LUBAR!
imgur upload still works:
-
@accalia Except for those of us behind firewalls.

well if uploads weren't broken that wouldn't be an issue.
it's not my fault uploads are broken!
(the screenshot's just the google search for
neat!
that i got by clicking the link i posted earlier)
-
@accalia I get a Bing search, and other than the fact that the link text says google but the actual URL is Bing, it works just fine.
-
-
@Magus said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
Guess what isn't blocked here!
..... why you screenshot bing? i posted google link......
-
@accalia :D
-
@Magus ah, so the Bing website was actually broken... do you work for Google? Yahoo!? a really shitty employer who can't get DNS to work correctly?
-
@anotherusername The last one. Wikipedia doesn't work in chrome-derived browsers either.
-
Today I tried to get a
.website
file (basically a speshul.url
file that only opens in Internet Explorer) to work on someone's PC. Except... they had Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8.Windows Update tried to open the update.microsoft.com website, which of course didn't work because the default browser was Firefox. And then it didn't work in IE because it tried to load support.microsoft.com which also didn't work in IE:
The same URL worked fine in either Chrome or Firefox, but the "Fix-It" thing didn't show up, and instead had a Download button which sent me to "how to use Microsoft Fix-It".
(note: that's just a random support page I googled to try to take a screenshot, which coincidentally does the same thing in my XP virtual machine)
Then I googled IE, and learned that the browser I was using was not, in fact, compatible with the OS I was using it on:
So I finally just made a shortcut to
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://website/
, and the website worked with IE 8 so I gave up and left him with that.
-
@anotherusername Using the internet on an unsupported browser on an unsupported OS? I sure hope that's only some dumb intranet. Yeah, we have random external websites on anything other than the latest IE.
-
@Magus he's special, he started just after we replaced everyone's computers with newer ones running Windows 7, but of course we didn't get any extras so we had to give him one of the old ones.
And he typically uses Firefox or Chrome as his browser, because IE8 is old. I'm surprised the website in question actually worked on it.
Then again, it's "Enterprise", so it probably supports IE5 or some ridiculous like.
Also, it's not an external website.

TIL if you're in Europe you can get all sorts of publications by the EU shipped to your house for FREEE!!!11!

TIL GitHub has nice support for Inform 7 files complete with syntax highlighting.
This simplifies things and now I have a paid account with a private repo...
-
TIL that Literally Unbelievable started posting again two weeks ago. Nice to see it back.
-
TIL that prog-punk is a thing, and has been since at least 1990. How did I miss this? I need to look more into this, as it could be either incredibly awesome or incredibly awful, but either way promise to be interesting. So far, most of it comes across as The Clash meets Flaming Lips meets King Missile, which isn't quite what I expected, but since I wasn't sure what to expect I suppose that was inevitable.

This, however, is a lot more like what I sort of imagined, a kind of thrash-y version of Yes.

TIL that Pewdiepie lives in the same town I do... Though recently got evicted so might not still live here but certainly did.

i detect a story here. i'll start making the popcorn.
-
@accalia apparently his landlord said he was being too noisy except it's also apparently turned into a debate on homophobia. Which in Brighton, England is about the most insane place to be a landlord if you also happen to be homophobic.
-
@Arantor said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):

well, he's a youtuber, a certain amount of noise is expected...... that's no reason to....
@Arantor said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
landlord [...] homophobic.
oh....
i'm not a huge fan of pewdiepie (not a fan at all really) but that..... that's utter horse shit that no one should have to deal with.
-
@accalia homophobic landlord is one thing, but in fucking Brighton, where everyone is so open and liberal... Fucking hell, even walking down the road as a polycule, holding hands, and the most reaction we got was from a slightly drunk guy who was very enthusiastic to see one guy, two women. Brighton is that sort of town, everyone is interesting and open minded. One of the many reasons I love it and am proud to call it home.
-
@accalia Oddly, that and disney's most furry movie are my favorite ones. But I mean hades was amazingly entertaining, and the song the rooster whistles is just too catchy!

I don't know hardly anything about pewdiepie, so that's not far enough, except unless you're using the anime definition of 'trap'.

No, unless you're talking about my cousin. I googled Piewdiepie, found his Wikipedia page, which mentions a girlfriend named Marzia, and doesn't say she's trans.

Well, I'm still confused, so you can just slink off quietly and I won't say anything.

I don't know hardly anything about pewdiepie,
He's an obnoxious asshat making wildly popular videos on YouTube. Got kicked out due to noise complaints, claims on Twitter the landlord heard him making a video and thought he was having gay sex. Also claims he soundproofed the studio so the landlord hasn't heard him at all. You wrap your head around that.
And Bridget is from Guilty Gear - basically a hot chick until you start paying attention to the cutscenes and realize that's just how men dress in that universe.

-
@Maciejasjmj not to mention comments like how the landlord called him a faggot, and how he was served eviction papers before the noise complaint.
-
@Maciejasjmj said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):

Dubious. Anti-reflective acoustic tiling != soundproofing. I'd want to see evidence of lead sheeting behind those tiles before giving much weight to that claim.
