Nobody beats Google at finding novel and innovative ways to irritate users.
Went to sign in to my school GAFE account today, using auto-type from KeePass as always.
With 99% of sites, KeePass can use the same default auto-type string:
{USERNAME}{TAB}{PASSWORD}{ENTER}
. Google, being the precious special flower that it is, has for some time now required its own special auto-type string:{USERNAME}{ENTER}{DELAY 2000}{PASSWORD}{TAB}{TAB} {ENTER}
. This is because Google requires two login pages, one for the username and the other for the password. Unless, of course, you've already logged in with that browser and failed to uncheck the "stay signed in" checkbox on the second page; do that, and you won't be prompted for a username at all next time. Which is why my Google auto-type string ends with{TAB}{TAB} {ENTER}
; when I sign out, I want to be signed out, not left in some kind of Google half-remembered account limbo.Today's innovative new Google UX: turning off "stay signed in" actually blocks the login. Instead of signing in, you're taken to https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/2917834?p=securesignin&hl=en&rd=1 to be sternly admonished for failing to choose the more "convenient" option.
The trouble with establishing democracy in the Middle East is that the dumb bastards keep voting for the wrong candidates.

Ok, let's run through the possibilities here:
-
You're the only person who has access to the computer. Why are you logging out of Google? Why not just stay logged in if you're going to store the password on the machine?
-
You're not the only person who has access to the computer, but you trust the other people who can access it. There's a thing called a "user account" built specifically for this purpose.
-
You don't trust the computer. WHY ARE YOU ENTERING YOUR PASSWORD ON IT?

Because the only thing I ever want to give Google an identity for is Drive, which I only use at all because school administrator.

you forgot #4: You don't trust google and want as little exposure to their data mining as possible.
.... have you heard of firefox in that case?
or IE? i know older versions of that were shit but the new ones are actually halfway decent.
or chromium? that's like chrome but with a lot of the google fluff not yet added in.

If I ever have to login to my account in a public computer, I do it in private mode, just to make sure. So I don't have to care whether I "stay signed in" or not. The downside is people might assume weird things if they see you do that.

I don't see that happening in my machine. I do get a tooltip with a link to that page, but it doesn't block me from logging in.

I wager what's really happening here is that his "tab tab enter" no longer unchecks "stay logged in" but selects a help link which says something like "what does secure log in mean?"
I mean Occam's Razor here. What's more likely, that Google would chide customers for using a feature they themselves implemented and provided, or that they just changed the tab order of the page slightly?

don't ask me, ask @flabdablet .
i'm personally of the opinion that if you don't trust google, then you're totally boned.
of course if you do trust google and google turns out to have been unworthy of your trust you are equally boned, so there's that.

Yeah, but at that point it's like, what else is new? The whole system of trust in megacorporations on the internet and that browsers are safe to use by grandma has dissolved entirely at that point, and the golden age of the internet would be pretty much over if Google were caught doing something egregious with our data.

Looks like I've hit some kind of race between the link on that tooltip and the main Submit button about which of them activates on Enter.

Has anyone found a way to force the username/password to show up on the same page? Would be helpful if that was a thing.
I'm really starting to despise how Google is trying to force a platform on us. If I wanted a Google platform, I would have a Chrome OS.
-
@Sumireko They kind of backed-away from that a bit by relaxing the conjoining of YouTube and Google+, but they still haven't created any way for people who conjoined the two because they had no choice to undo it.

IIRC there was some fudging you could do with the useragent to get it to show. Can't recall the thread though (the whole keepass can't enter passwords on google logins was discussed previously).

I think somebody from Google must have been reading that thread, because I can't make that work any more.

@accalia What sort of tone were you going for here? Sounds slightly too formal, really.
You could go with "HENTAI! DETTEKE!" if it's a disgusted 'go away!'.
Hmm, I feel like this isn't pedantic enough.
What is it missing?
Oh, I know! The reason it sounds too formal is the "anata wa" which, along with being possibly too intimate (One might expect "kimi" or the more slurred "anta") makes the sentence really heavily structured. This is amplified to the "desu", which could otherwise be said playfully or definitively.
There, that's probably worth a :badg- we don't have those anymore...
...what a waste.

blame google translate for that....
i've been meaning to learn the language for years, but never made much progress.
-
@accalia I took a year or two in high school and got nothing out of it except hiragana and katakana, and then I took a year in uni and did horribly. Watching anime while I play games, and listening to japanese music seems to help. But it might be more effective to just have keyhole tv going in the background as you do things.

Cause I want to. I hate computer companies telling what my workflow should be, how to love and have sex, how to like, how to live my life.
-
-
@Magus And no, anime isn't so bad that you only know how to say things like "I am the superdarklord of dragondeathflame, be made nothing by my dragonbeamcannonlazerblastexplosion!"
...though I probably could.

i can swear in about eight languages though if you get me angry enough
-
@accalia I took spanish when I was younger, and couldn't do it at all. Japanese was somehow easier for me, since it wasn't a romance language. Probably depends on the person. But anyway, immersion is always going to be the best way to learn a language.

absolutely, if i ever win the jackpot on the one lottery ticket a year i permit myself i'm going to get a ticket to japan and see how long i can stay there.
if i manage to figure out how to get the credentials and apply for it i can probably get a job as an english teatcher which will let me stay there nore or less indefinitely

TIL NodeBB disappears the Refresh button somehow...
Either that, or maybe Apple has really fscked up the browser even more...
Then again, you are using an OS that treats its users like they're wearing biohazard gloves, so YMMV....

NodeBB disappears the Refresh button somehow...
I have no idea how it's supposed to work, because this is the only "smart" mobile device I've used (and it's badly out of date), but for me the whole address-bar header disapears unless I'm at the top of the document. Chrome, too, but it slides back in if I scroll toward the top of the doc; too bad posting is completely impossible IME.

I feel sad for you, truly, and maybe a bit horrified.
For me, the address bar (and tabs, in chrome) appears the moment I scroll a pixel towards the top of the page (of, if I'm there, it's always visible). It causes a moment of jiggery with Node's titlebar appearing as well (which affects the page height for some reason), but other than that I can usually refresh at any point in time for any reason.
@HardwareGeek said in GOOOOOGGGGGLLLLLEEEE:

Yeah, I recently picked up someone else's device and finally found out what everyone's talking about. I blame the device for pretending to be the size of a wristwatch. Seriously, I could operate it with my fist and be just as accurate...

Can't repro with Edge or Chrome; in fact, the "stay signed in" box is actually GONE, and it just decides to remember who I am for me--only prompts for a password.
It does repeatedly ask me to get Chrome, though, which makes up for the lack of the other irritation, I guess.

Screw them! I do it not just because I don't want my logins potentially remaining active in some manner, I also do it because I hate when people fill my history with random bullshit. I tend to use the guessing ability of the addressbar to find stuff in history at times and I hate having other people's junk in there. I'm not polluting someone else's history for that reason.
