Re: And now for something COMPLETELY random
That's not particularly random. Lots of people like etymology here.
Here's something more random: Any dudes on here with Natural Hair? I'm looking for tips for a friend who's a 4b or a 4c (not sure which). I was raised white, so I'm not sure what resources are good outside the few I use for my own hair (3b).
InB4: "What do those numbers even mean" "As a white guy I demand to use the term Natural Hair" "My hair is made of silicon lol" "in dwarf fortress..."

Huh.
After googling, I found this:
...but I'm still not sure what "natural hair" means.

Today I identify as a person who can use the term. And also a 6-foot Asian princess.

As a set term, it's African-American hair (so in the 4 range) that isn't permed, relaxed, or whatnot, just left free. For many years it was taboo to wear your hair natural, as white folks thought it was "unkempt" and "dirty" and "unprofessional", but the Natural Hair movement has been really picking up (you know you made it when Oprah does it)

That's for women though, I'm asking for a male friend. Less styles and more product recommendations.
-
@Yamikuronue Yeah, that's what I was finding. But your description makes sense.

I've never had anything done to my hair, but I keep it cut short, so I don't know if that counts.
-
i have hair, it's kinda dark and really curly..... i wash it regularly with whatever soap happens to be in the shower. lately 'ts been the kind that smells a little like sea breeze mixed with motor oil..... before that it was the kind that smelled of strawberries...... look, i'm not the one that does the shopping for the house!
oh and i do have my hair cut occasionally, but that's it.

What about phased-plasma hair in the 40W range?
TIL there's a numbering system for hair, not that it's easy to find details.

Is that a proper term?
Either way, knowing the age and gender range of these forums, a better question would be "Any dudes on here with any hair?".

Doesn't your photo occasionally show on the front page?
-
@PleegWat pst. it's a wig!

I am the crackeriest cracker who ever crackered so I have less than no idea what's going on here.
-
and i'm just here flummoxed about the term "raised white".
-
@Yamikuronue Based on your definition of "natural hair", why would he use any product other than shampoo?

I grew up surrounded by people like Weng.

Conditioner is a must-have.
-
@Yamikuronue So by "natural" you mean "not at all natural".
-
@blakeyrat Clearly.
-
@Yamikuronue Unga Boonga the caveman really enjoyed his oil-derived hair care conditioner product!
Here is an illustration of a caveman from Google Image Search:

Not likely. I have had Ethiopian royalty[1] call me "so white."
[1] A distant grand-nephew or something of the king deposed in the 70s.

I have had Nigerian royalty call me "RECIPIENT OF THIS MESSAGE"

@Yamikuronue Impossible. I am unique.

Not quite formal interview hair but should be fine in the office once you're a known quantity. I have fairly long hair that I tie back when sales bring people into the office. The rest of the time I let it down. It makes me feel more rock and roll but I suspect hobo look would be more accurate! =D

no dreds, no weaves, not chemically straightened, colored (that always requires bleaching first) treatments.
Don't you have specialized hair salons and shops in Murica? Even in the middle of historical Brughes there is an African Hair Shop and there are shops selling African beauty products. I wouldn't recommend to get your hair done there ... not because they are bad but ... euh ... it's run African style. Make an appointment, it's ok, arrive and wait an hour because there are 5 people waiting for you.
But going to the Matonge quarter in Brussels, that's the African/Congolese part of town isn't any better. There just let you in a chair and half way they just walk out to go grab lunch.
Conclusion: I'm glad with my easy to maintain, privileged, white hairdoBut to go further on the real question ... just go to a specialized shop and ask. Once we where in Paris and apparently we forgot some hair care product. Although I was looking sharp as ever, this was a High Priority Item. So we just asked the first Sister that crossed our path ... two Sister later we where lost in some banlieu, it could have been Banlieu 13, but with the Right Items.

@Luhmann
Did I just write two paragraphs about hair care? is wrong with me?

Another fan of the Lush products then. :-)
(More seriously, I kinda like their solid shampoo bars, way nicer than the soapy liquid stuff.)

I assume it's got something to do with loaves of bread. I've no idea why you'd put them in your hair, but it's not something that I plan to worry about.

The term is stupid, though.
Not really. The alternative (perms, weaves, and coloring) produce a very fake effect compared to the more natural look of wearing your own kinky hair "natural".
-
@Yamikuronue
And ... people with, say, naturally straight hair, who don't color their hair / don't do various other possibly harmful things to it aren't allowed to call it "natural" why exactly?
Are those people made out of chemicals?I find that restriction of the word "natural" arbitrary and stupid.
-
@aliceif said in Hair care tips:
I find that restriction of the word "natural" arbitrary and stupid.
Oh, that's not what I got from your statement. I won't bother explaining that here, it's not going to end well.
-
@Yamikuronue Then explain why the term used in France for it doesn't arbitrarily restrict a word that could apply to everyone from universal use.
-
@aliceif I know nothing about France.
-
@Yamikuronue
But everyone else has to know about American activism.
-
@aliceif Okay whatever.
I opened a thread asking a question in the board devoted to questions, using the proper term that's used in my dialect of English for this sort of thing, and I get nothing but crap for it. I'm not inclined to answer any more questions at this point. I didn't invent the term, people.
-
@aliceif said in Hair care tips:

Uh ... I think you just need to hang out a bit with African(-American) people. They have a different relationship with Hair then us white ass western people.
The things they do to their hair on a daily basis to get the look right is just amazing. It's weaves on top off straightened and bleached hair. If it falls out you put on a wig.
And don't think those famous people are better. They just have more money to throw at it.
Leaving that behind for them really is going natural .
-
@Yamikuronue I saw what you wrote in the fine print in your opening post. You began this whole thread with race BS. Instead of explaining what "Natural Hair" means to you, you just made it seem like it's a thing white people aren't allowed to do and white people deliberately intrude on. And that it is somehow "common knowledge".
-
@aliceif I wrote that in the fine print because I knew where this thread would go: exactly where you're taking it. I knew if I mentioned anything related to race at all it'd become a huge flamewar, so I self-consciously pointed it out ahead of time so people would know I'm not an idiot.
-
@Yamikuronue You are an idiot.
-
@aliceif Yeah, fuck you too. I'm out.
-
@aliceif said in Hair care tips:

I don't get what you are aiming at here.
Look, it's just a sub-culture way of describing a trend and styling. It doesn't have to apply to anyone but the sub-culture. I have the impression you are overthinking this.
-
For the record, I have no idea what French term @aliceif is referring to. Though that might be because I'm white and don't usually discuss hair styles (mine is completely straight and I keep it short because letting it grow would make it very annoying).
-
oh, a topic about hair, it's probably boring
lot's of being exchanged
grabs
