So what? There's too many of them already.
[edit] "Them" being "kids", obviously. Fuck, can nobody take a joke around here any more?

Ok, seriously, get the fuck out of my thread you bigot. @mods remove this waste of oxygen please.
-
@Vaire Sorry, but "bigot"? You what?
-
Oh Maddie McCann, Maddie McCann, If you can't find her, nobody can.
@Vaire As you don't seem to be responding, here's a comment before I get, as you say, "the fuck out of your thread". I was way too drunk last night to respond to you in a coherent manner.
You seem to have assumed that because I don't like either the music or the marketing concept behind your favourite band, that somehow means I'm massively bigoted against the Japanese. Here's a clue. It doesn't. I still think what I think about Babymetal and its fans, though, and your later comment in this thread
@Vaire said in Holy shit, they found him alive!:
If kids are involved, and I was in charge of the universe,
doesn't do much to help your case as far as I'm concerned.
OK, calm down, I can feel you typing @mods right now. I am aware that there is ambiguity in what you wrote, and no, I'm not assuming it means you want to have sex with children. Regardless of your taste in music.
So, let's look at the message I posted. I assume the part you'r taking offence at is the second bit, "There's too many of them anyway". Given that it was in response to a comment about Japanese children committing suicide, that gives you four options - That I think there are too many Japanese, too many children, too many Japanese children or (for the pendantic) too many suicidal Japanese children. As long as you assume that I was actually saying what I think, because everybody on the internet does that, amirite?
It's ambiguous. Too ambiguous, in fact, and I apologise for that, but in mitigation it was typed fast and slightly drunk. A good way to respond to that would have been, for example,
@Vaire, in a perfect world where he doesn't jump instantly to conclusions said in Holy shit, they found him alive!:
Do you realise how bigoted that makes you sound?
rather than
@mods @mods @mods remove this piece of shit waste of oxygen from my thread waaaaah
It's generally a good idea to assume "least harm" from internet comments. It's also a good idea, especially around here and with me in particular, to assume "bad taste joke". So another good gambit might have been
@Vaire, in a perfect world where he doesn't jump instantly to conclusions said in Holy shit, they found him alive!:
Oh very funny. Not.
… or leave the "dislike" button to do its thing
… or, just possibly, grow a fucking skin you whining manbaby.Thing is, you see, the only actual bigotry in that badly worded joke was coming from your shoulder aliens. It wasn't an attack on you, or the Japanese. It was a badly worded joke, that's all.
And by the way. Do you know what a significant number of the people round here call someone who jumps instantly to the aid of another group of people (who are perfectly capable of defending themselves) over some perceived slight?

Because this thread is not in Look at Me! the OP does not decide the rules.

And when was that policy enacted?
-
@Vaire what rule did you intend to apply?
-
@Vaire the look at me and the help categories have different etiquette than the rest of the forum. I'm not sure when the help categories earned their status, but probably over a year at this point.
The look at me stuff started out that way.

What about threads that are not about a specific person, but which the OP doesn't want to turn into a flamewar? Currently, the only option for that is the lounge, which is not publicly accessible.
-

threads that are not about a specific person
You could make basically anything you want to talk about into "a thing about a specific person". Watch this:
A TOPIC WHERE
subject name here
DISCUSSEStopic name here
The device is now more valuable than the organs and combined incomes of everyone in
subject hometown here
.
-
@ben_lubar Yeah, but that's kinda stupid. Also, I suspect there are people who ignore the Look at Me! category.
I'm just suggesting that it might make sense to have a place for troll-free and on-topic discussions outside the lounge.
-
@asdf said in Holy shit, they found him alive!:
Yeah, but that's kinda stupid.
That's the best kind!
-
@asdf mods have jeffed things out of look at me topics because of rules
-
@fbmac Yeah, but what does that have to do with my suggestion?
-

All the categories are subject to the mods jeffing offtopic stuff out of threads, especially if it becomes a significant number of posts.
-
@anotherusername That doesn't prevent threads from turning into flamewars due to trolling, though. There's no "pls be serious here" category here for general discussions, only for help threads and personal stuff. The only category for general discussions where trolling is (pretty much) not tolerated is the lounge, which is not accessible to everybody.
I'm not saying that we absolutely need such a category. I'm just suggesting that it might make sense to add one. @Vaire, for example, might want to put a thread like this one in there.
-
@asdf Suggested category name: "Civilized Discourse™".

@anotherusername 733 bytes is not between 504 and 502. DENIED.

@ben_lubar IIRC, didn't count characters inside quotes or HTML tags.
-
@anotherusername That doesn't matter, we can be discoursistent about it.
