@lucas1 I didn't think people forgot about Finland. Molotov cocktails are still a thing..though people have forgotten about the Molotov breadbaskets.
TIL:
Also, that thing looks like a giant dong.

@anotherusername Don't most large bombs?

by the goddess..... i can never look at weaponry the same way again.

@accalia Most weapons development were just Richard measuring contests. "My cannon is longer and fires bigger rounds, I'm much more manly" or "My rocket is bigger and lasts longer, I'm manly"

@anotherusername They were propeller fins. There's three, but from that angle you only see two.
-
@theBread I knew they were fins, but they made it look even more like a giant dong than most large bombs.
-
@anotherusername They are fins that were dropped on Finns. But yeah, that one definitely had that look to it, especially with that nose cone.
-
@theBread Being jammed down in the snow like that makes it look a bit sad despite its tremendous size.

@accalia It's not limited to weapons development too, I present to you, New Shepard:

@theBread Well considering I met quite a few people my own age that didn't think the holocaust happened or that we were fighting Russia in WWII. I only knew about it because I read about the "White Death" on cracked.com.

Why would a bomb have propeller fins? You probably mean they’re vanes designed to impart spin to the bomb, so that when it opens (in the air), the bomblets will get thrown out into a nice big spread pattern.
-
@lucas1 It's more a legacy of the Winter war is still around. Many people don't know the origin, but still refer to it.
@Gurth I stand corrected, that bomb is indeed vaney. To be honest, it looks like a torpedo they repurposed into a cluster bomb.

/me looks at the photo again
No, sorry, can’t see it resembling a torpedo overly much. Torpedoes tend to be long and thin, not squat, and don’t usually have fins or vanes projecting beyond the diameter of the main body (because the weapon in most cases has to be capable of being launched from a tube). If it looks like anything (other than what’s already been mentioned), I’d say “bathtub with vanes on it” is about the closest I can think of.

@lucas1 The situation in Finland was incredibly complicated, and shifted back and forth a few times over the duration of WW2. But the key outcome is that the Finns don't really like the Germans very much, and really don't like the Russians at all.
