On iPad/Safari, the top is animated, the bottom is not.
iPads don't support
<video muted autoplay>
?
-
@ben_lubar survey says no.

This much is true. It's not something that inconveniences the users, though.
Until it breaks. Like it did here.
-
@ben_lubar neither, it seems, does edge. Which is good, that's a completely horrible tag.

no one should. auto play video is like the evilist thing possible to do.;
like worse than the worst evil.

I don't care if a muted video autoplays. Just the unmuted ones.

Surely a video (using the video tag) that doesn't autoplay still downloads, ready for when someone presses play?

on mobile browsers? not usually.
data plans and all that.

@accalia Ah, well, fair point then.

So... they're better than GIFs. Because even if the GIF also doesn't download until you press play, it's still several times larger than the equivalent video.
-
@anotherusername correct, unless they autoplay then they are pure evil

I fail to see the difference between an autoplaying video with no sound and a gif apart from how the gif has a shittier compression format.
-
@ben_lubar you make it sound like i'm happy about the GIFs
i'm not.
the correct thing to do is put the video in place with a proper supported codec and click to play.
anything else is

How about if a browser doesn't want to support autoplay, it has some way for the user to play the video that isn't autoplaying?
-
@ben_lubar how about not autoplaying any video ever. because that's evil.
i might, MIGHT evedntually be convinced that autoplay is a good thing for a video site like youtube,
but i'm not yet convinced there and i'm certainly not convinced for sites like this.

I think you mean on SMALL WIDTH browsers.

@Lorne-Kates those too, yeah.
