Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems

@cartman82 Funny you should ask. I was looking through the users page today and noticed that @galgorah had one.

GAH JESUS! That thing is horrifying.
Tell you what, I'll change it to something less animated now. But if I can do Godzilla, I'm putting Godzilla there damnit. As soon as I get home.

Pretty cool. M.U.L.E. was one of my favorite games from the Commodore era. Good times.
What was that? Avatars? Yeah, I'm glad to have Tails' other frame back, even if it doesn't get to stay long. I don't turn off animated graphics completely, but I do block ones that are too annoying.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
-
@blakeyrat BUNNY!!! EDIT: Got changed, sadly.

Aspect ratio all wrong, so I did a google for "Doofy avatar images" and I like this result best.
-
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
See how quickly you get used to the M.U.L.E.?????
I can't believe the way they "protected" the site against GIF uploads was to literally just tell the OS not to show .gif files in the Open dialog, and nothing else. Ridonkulous.
-
For Christs sake, will you people stop changing your avatars? Profile page is not a toy.
-
@blakeyrat I wasn't "used" to the M.U.L.E. at all.
Well, in theory they convert all avatars to pngs based on the setting in the admin page. Obviously, that isn't working:
-
@cartman82 Oh man I got a M.U.L.E. avatar and I've annoyed the fuck out of Cartman82 and Boomzilla. This is my lucky day.
-
@blakeyrat I liked you more when you were a depressed wreck.
-
@cartman82 said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Don't make me change yours ...
-
@boomzilla I was going to joke that it's probably being super-clever and converts animated GIFs to APNGs, but then I realized: ain't nothing ever supported APNGs nor will they.
-
@blakeyrat I wondered about that when I first looked at it but chrome's inspector told that me your avatar was a gif.
-
@blakeyrat It's sad, MNG was a cool format!
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
YESSSS my avatar is now the M.U.L.E.
Damn, I knew that was familiar. I played that on my Atari 400.

I've had animated gifs disabled for damn near a decade now.
Hands up, everyone who was surprised that Grandpa Lorne turned those off.
*pause*
Well, now, don't all wait for the other person. Nobody? Yeah, that's what I thought.
-
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
. Animated avatars, OTOH.
Meh, lots of forums allow it. You gotta be pretty y for it to be an annoyance.
Or whyever @Lorne-Kates does it.
-
@FrostCat I think it depends on what the avatar is; some animations can be pretty annoying
-
@RaceProUK You either allow them or you don't. If you allow them, then you pretty much allow everything, unless the site TOS forbid certain things, and then the users just have to realize if they cross the line there may be consequences, starting at having their avatar changed out from under them. It's not a novel concept. When Free Realms existed, you could pick a name from a list of first, middle, and last names, or you could use your own, but all custom ones were subject to moderator approval, and IIRC you got some kind of generic name until yours was approved.

@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
SPECIFICALLY SPENT TIME TRYING TO CRASH BROWSERS AND THE FORUM SOFTWARE
No, that was just Discourse acting as expected.

They all raised their hands, but since I have animated gifs turned off, it just looks like no one did.
And BTW: Animated GIFs are "old school ancient" technology. Turning them off is actually more modern. So there, fuckpoop.

How would you be able to tell the difference, you snow-addled fool?
Ah-HA, that's what I thought.

can you post what was that for the late?
-

@boomzilla: Yeah actually I didn't realize it was animated. Hang on one sec while I change it... ok done.
-
@FrostCat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

You say that like there's something wrong with it. No, it's the people with the animated avatars who are wrong.
-
@fbmac said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

A video game from the 80s.
Google is your friend.
-
@FrostCat I was thinking about the animated avatars people were using
-
@fbmac An animated version of the icon on the Wikipedia page. Looks sort of like an AT-AT walker.
-
I'm upping the priority on "stop notifying me about likes and people 'following' me and other pointless shit like that". The notifications are KILLING ME.
And BTW, other than putting stuff in the bug tracker, what's the process for getting any of this shit fixed? I thought we switched to this forum because the developers were so quick, zoom, zoom, but development seems to have come to a virtual stop.
Hell Boomzilla seems to be working three times faster than the actual NodeBB developers.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Eh, I wouldn't say that from looking at their commit logs. We definitely got some quick fixes during the transition and shortly after. I think the main guy we were interacting with, @julianlam, went on vacation recently...not sure if he's back yet or not.
I think a lot of the remaining / new issues aren't of the quick fix variety. Ignoring topics certainly isn't.
-
@boomzilla No I get that, but there's a lot of simple stuff on the table still. Like your bugbear, blocking .gifs in an actually-working way. I don't know Node.JS, but I don't see how that could possibly be more than a 5 minute fix.
Or expanding the drag&drop target to actually match the text entry field.
And the "showing mobile mode on desktop" thing may not be a quick fix (although it's not too tough; even I've figured out exactly how to code it), but it ought to be pretty high priority to them considering a ton of new users are seeing the mobile version first (with zero indication that there's a better text-entry method available to them) and getting a bad impression of the product.
But I guess if open source people cared about their product's first impression, they'd stop releasing products that were so shitty.
-
@blakeyrat Fair enough. BTW:

Don't pngs support animation as well these days?
-
@flabdablet APNG? Yes it's a thing, but only about four people use it.

sorry for the notification, but this one deserves an upvote

You could try always including racist statements so all your posts only get downvoted I guess.

I think you pissmelled 'statements likely to be interpreted as being "liberal"'
-
@tufty What's the difference?
-
@tufty No?
-
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:
@tufty What's the difference?
It's the result of subtracting one number from another.
-
Here's a fun one, either:
- NodeBB arbitrarily banned my account for a half-hour, or
- Some moderator here banned me then had Boomzilla lie about it to me on Twitter
I'll be generous and assume it was option 1. WTF?
-
@blakeyrat You weren't on the banned list that I could see during the half hour. I think NodeBB lied to you about why your login was rejected.
-
@Yamikuronue said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Quality.
For the record, my login was exactly correct (the password was typed by a super-genius mega-machine which always gets it right). My account was just banned for awhile.
-
@Yamikuronue No, and that shows up in the "event" log in the admin area. There haven't been any user bans today. Maybe there are some server side logs that @ben_lubar could see. I have no idea if stuff like that gets logged.
-
@blakeyrat said in Blakeyrat pointing out NodeBB problems:

Yeah, better forum software would have kept you out for good.
-
@boomzilla If you guys banned me, I'd have an excuse to not come back here again without people bitching to me about rage quits. You'd be doing me a favor.
-
@boomzilla I grepped the logs for several things related to "blakeyrat" or "uid 13", but nothing came up. There's a lot of "/login: invalid csrf" but that seems to be a sockbot that never got told we migrated.
