Does anybody here own a Wii-U?

because it's designed for the little kiddies who want to play games while their parents are using the TV.
It's also an input device for apps which require credit card information or passwords (touch keyboard). You don't want your PW to show up in your TV, do you?
-
@asdf But (IIRC) you can't ever change your wifi password.
-
@Yamikuronue Yeah, also not your CC info in the store. As I said, all sensitive information has to be entered in the gamepad. It's a bit annoying, but makes sense.
-
@asdf said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:

They could have done the same as they did for the Wii, or something like what MS and Sony did for the Xboxen and PlayStations
-
@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
Toys R Us disagrees with you.
Maybe they built their own. It's definitely not the official controller.
-
@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
You'd think the game page on Nintendo's webpage (which is awful, BTW) would have a simple icon or something that says "requires gamepad".
The Wii U comes with a game pad. Every user has one. So why the fuck would that be important information?
The supported controllers are listed in the store, though, so you know which other controllers you can use.
-
@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
You want a DLC? Fine. Buy a plastic toy.
DLCs don't require Amiibos. Amiibos sometimes unlock mini-games, yes, but it's not like the are required to play any game mode or DLC in any Nintendo game.
-
@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
There ain't no OS in the universe that assumes you have a mouse. Even the shittiest one ever. (Keyboard, for the older ones like GEOS, maybe. Mouse? No.)
-
@TimeBandit That doesn't stop Windows from starting or being usable
-
@RaceProUK Neither does it prevent the Wii U from starting or you from playing games on it. No difference there.
-
@RaceProUK He said "assume".
Beside, Win98 is unusable even with a mouse
-
@TimeBandit Looking for a mouse and asking the user if they want to connect one != assuming there's a mouse; in fact, the fact it checks that a mouse is actually physically connected is proof it doesn't assume there's a mouse
-
@RaceProUK It assume you have a mouse and throws an error because it is not connected.
It doesn't assume you have a printer, so it doesn't complain if it doesn't find one.
-
@TimeBandit Again, it doesn't assume you have a mouse. It asks if you want to connect one if it doesn't find one, but it doesn't assume you'll have one connected. And if you choose not connect one, it'll boot up normally anyway.
Also note that the error comes not from Windows, but from the BIOS; Windows simply dresses it up in a nice frock for the user.
-
@blakeyrat so Microsoft does not force Microsoft to use an xbox feature? I.e. Microsoft does not want to use said feature…yeah that has nothing to do with the Wii U.
-
@RaceProUK Again, it doesn't assume you have a printer, or a joystick, or a network card, so it doesn't throw an error because it doesn't detect those.
It does assume you own a mouse, so it complains that it is not connected.
And nowhere does it says that it's an error from the BIOS. The BIOS will complain if it doesn't detect a keyboard (unless you disable it). Never saw a BIOS complain about the lack of a mouse (except maybe those AMI BIOS back in the day that needed a mouse to navigate it).
-
@TimeBandit If it assumes you have a mouse, why in the fuck would it check? It checks because it doesn't assume you have a mouse.
-
Hey @blakeyrat, I did some googling for you and found
Which is not entirely "don't use the controller" but at least a "you don't need to swing the controller around like an idiot". Afair, the giant ass tablet DID have buttons on it.
Filed Under: I want it known that I posted this upon following the first google result. If it is wrong, I am not liable to be called a "liar"
Also Filed Under: I don't own a Wii (U) nor will I own any in the forseeable future.
Also, according to some German review you can use the pro-controller for second player. So I am not entirely sure it doesn't work for single player.

@TimeBandit If it assumes you have a mouse, why in the fuck would it check? It checks because it doesn't assume you have a mouse.
Assume (verb) : to take for granted
If it does not assume you HAVE a mouse, when it doesn't detect one connected, it would assume YOU DON'T HAVE ONE.
It checks to make sure it is connected !If I ask you "is your car manual or automatic", it means I assume you have a car. Else I would ask "do you have a car".
This is fuckin ridiculous
Here, have a

Microsoft isn't an asshole and sells the Xbone without the Kinect at a lower price
Now they do. They didn't to start.
@aliceif said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
I can't think of any stores where I live that do that.
The only stores I can think of that do it like that are Walmart and Toys R Us, which are stores where I wouldn't generally buy games from anyways.
@asdf said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
it's not like the are required to play any game mode or DLC in any Nintendo game
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD has a whole dungeon that requires the Amiibo that comes with the "special edition" to unlock. There is no other way to get access to it. And as far as I know, they don't sell that Amiibo separately (and like DLC codes bought in the store, it only works on one system/account, so you can't loan the Amiibo to a friend who got only the game).
-
@TimeBandit You do realise that definition you posted doesn't support your argument whatsoever? If it was taking the presence of a mouse for granted, it wouldn't fucking check first! The fact that it does check means it's not taking the presence of a mouse for granted.
Now stop being a fucking moron and admit you're wrong.

@Kuro said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:

Never played Star Fox Zero, but in Splatoon those gyro controls are pretty awesome and part of why the game is so much fun. Not sure why people don't like it, it feels a bit like VR. Admittedly, though, you look like an idiot while playing.
-
@RaceProUK Calm down, dear.
-
@ChaosTheEternal said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:

OK, then they chose a weird way of unlocking their special edition content. My point is: They don't sell games that require you buy Amiibos to actually access the advertised features. It more like: "Oh, you have a matching Amiibo? Here's this cute little extra thingy." I think they struck the balance between rewarding collectors by adding little extras to the figures and not annoying/ripping off players pretty well.

@loopback0 Go away, Michael Winner; I already have car insurance :P

@asdf said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:

Xbox and Playstation owners do that every day, and somehow it hasn't resulted in the collapse of civilization as we know it.
-
@asdf said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
DLCs don't require Amiibos.
Liar.
There was a Legend of Zelda title that used the plastic toy to unlock a whole new dungeon.

@bb36e said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
@blakeyrat so Microsoft does not force Microsoft to use an xbox feature?
Phrased more correctly, Microsoft doesn't dictate to their owned studios what they should be doing. The studios do what they want.

I admit I was wrong to assume you understand English.

@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
That's a BUG, idiot.
That's how Win98 react if you boot without a mouse plugged-in. Idiot
-
@TimeBandit Coming from someone who completely undermined his own argument, yet somehow has deluded himself into thinking the exact opposite
-
@RaceProUK Hey you and @TimeBandit BOTH shut up and get the fuck out of my thread.
And from now on, only people above the age of 7, please.
-
@asdf said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
but in Splatoon those gyro controls are pretty awesome
The only time I played around with a system + game with Gyro was on the 3DS with some weird pre installed game. I tried to play it in a car... it was terrible.
Now, to be fair, in your own home you have more freedom than in a car and if nobody is watching looking like a complete fool is probably less of an issue... I still don't think it's worth it.That is not to say you are not to enjoy playing Motion controlled games, though. If it suits your fancy, more power to you. I am with blakeyrat on the matter (as far as I understand him) and like "regular old controllers" more.
Filed Under: To each their own... and hopefully to as many people as possible the same things!

According to your logic, Windows takes for granted that you have a printer, a joystick, a network card and all kind of other peripherals, since it doesn't check if they are present.

@blakeyrat Liar? I own that game and I had no clue until a few minutes ago? Also, apparently it's some kind of special edition thing, see above. It's not like Nintendo sells a game and then tells people to buy Amiibos to actually use it.

Yup.

What if I want to play Nintendo games and also be an adult who doesn't collect shitty plastic toys?

Holy shit, can you even read what I wrote above? None of the existing games requires an Amiibo to play the game. Apparently, you're resistant to facts and just want to bash Nintendo. I'm out of this thread.

@Magus said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
Those were those vampire games by Capcom, right?
I went and looked--it was Boktai: The Sun Is In Your Hand, and it was a Konami game, not Capcom. There was a sequel but I never played it.

Interesting. I had the game right but the maker wrong. So apparently it was made by the now-hitlersatan of game companies. There were definitely megaman crossovers, though. You could get that weapon in the fourth battle network game, and it was kind of awesome. Worst game in the series, but whatever.
-
@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
The problem is this isn't 1992 and you can't do that any more because every store that sells games keeps them locked behind glass.
Except that if you ask, they'll take it out for you to look at, especially if you say why you want to look at the box.
-
@aliceif said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
I can't think of any stores where I live that do that.
Places like Wal-Mart hide 'em in locked cases, because they don't do the think Gamestop does where they put fake boxes out. Gamestop frequently use the aforementioned fake boxes, that's basically just a picture on the front and a blurb on the back (because they're lazy fuckers), and so you can't see whether the gamepad icon's there or not.

That's certainly not true for the 2/3/DS.

While that's true, my son and I just got the new(ish) Fire Emblem games--we each got the different one. He bought the 3rd path at the store, and they gave him a code and said don't lose the receipt before you enter the code in the console, because they can't reprint it (which is mildly WTFy) but again, once it's downloaded, it's tied to the hardware, so if your DS breaks, you're fucked.
Well, in the past, there was a facility for transfering SOME information from one console to another but I am not sure how comprehensive it was, and IIRC even if you could copy a game, you couldn't copy your saves.
-
@FrostCat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
Gamestop does
Gamestop generally takes real copies and guts them to put on the shelves. I haven't seen any Gamestop near where I live that still uses the promo cases or printed covers in generic cases once the game is "on their shelves" so you can see everything you need.
-
@FrostCat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
That's certainly not true for the 2/3/DS.
I would imagine the 3DS doesn't require a WiiU Gamepad to change your password, yes.
-
@asdf said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:
Liar?
You must remember that part of @blakeyrat's nature is that, not being human, he doesn't truly understand some human concepts and thus makes up his own definition. For example, while the rest of us understand that telling a falsehood is only a lie if you know what you're saying isn't true, he misses that nuance, just like a bug is behavior he doesn't like, even if it's designed behavior and thus by human definitions, not a bug.
Or like the way he can't pronounce "dagger" correctly.
-
@blakeyrat said in Does anybody here own a Wii-U?:

Then, like the Dread Pirate Roberts, you are at an impasse.

Sometimes they're lazy, though, and don't take down the demo cases. Perhaps that was what I was thinking of.
