Loud motorcycles dying?

My hope for the future, "the manufacturer still faces challenges with younger consumers."
I would be okay with all loud motorcycle manufacturers going out of business, or having laws passed to ban them, or both. Or, I suppose we can just create communities for them similar to no-pet, no-children neighborhoods, except they would be where you can live if you want one of those things. Someone in my neighborhood has one of the things, and I swear to god, he lives 4 houses down, and 3 streets up, and I can hear that fucking thing like I am standing next to it when he fires it up. That wouldn't be so bad, except that for some reason he likes to fire it up, and then just SIT THERE for like 5-10 minutes doing FUCK ALL while revving the engine. It is a good thing for him there are laws against setting people on fire.
Sorry, I am not normally this cranky in the morning. Christ, where's my coffee =_=

-
@lolwhat You know how the asshat could avoid having to do that and disturb the entire fucking neighborhood? By NOT buying a mode of transportation that has that problem OR not buying one that is loud enough to wake the dead.
When I get in my car I turn the ignition, and I can just go. Right then. No revving in the driveway for up to 15 minutes pissing off the neighbors, waking children, and getting every dog in a 5 mile radius to bark. And my engine is even quiet.

Any reason Harley is still stuck in the 60s? Even NASCAR's moving to fuel injection!
-
Here we have morons that will remove the piece responsible for noise reduction, in a normal bike.
One of them argued me that was for safety, to make sure the cars will hear him.

@fbmac doppler effect, the sound doesn't reach a fellow driver on the road until the motorcycle is literally right next to that driver, or IN FRONT OF THEM.
E.G. it is NOT a "safety" feature.

you have bikes that break the sound barrier?
because otherwise they'll still be audible ahead of them, just at a higher pitch

One of the things I sort of regret about getting a supercharger is that it would be counterproductive to get a lopey cam. Because lopey cams are great at irritating non-gearheads! On the other hand, they suck for daily driving.

-
@accalia From experience, when sitting in traffic. I don't hear those fuckers AT ALL, until they blow past me and startle me. It may not be the doppler effect, but their loud pipes are not aiming the sound forward. I do not hear them coming as a warning.
And frankly, even if their loud pipes DID work that way, I wouldn't care. The things are a massive public noise nuisance, and should be banned. You want to ride around on an organ-donor toy, be my guest. Just do it quietly, please. (Yes, I have the same issues with people who have stereos in their vehicles that are dialed in to insane noise levels, I am an equal opportunity noisy-fuckers hater^_-)

I've seen bikes break Mach 0.25 in the 1/4 mile. Those guys have balls of steel.
-
@accalia And probably somewhat quieter than if it were ahead of them, travelling in the same direction, because the exhaust pipe(s) normally point backwards.

Basically this. I let my bike warm up for 5-10 minutes, especially in the morning if I'm using it to commute to work. I'm not a complete jackass, though, so it's not a Harley and actually has a muffler, and therefore doesn't wake up the neighborhood.

@Groaner I actually saw a tricked-out car, while visiting San Jose, shake their car so bad because of their shitty and over-powered stereo, that they wrecked the vehicle. I am not a mechanic (nor inclined to be) so I couldn't tell you what they did. All I know is that I heard them yelling at each other after they fired it up and then had to quickly pull over because something had shaken loose/broken because of their rattling of the car.
Good times. My schadenfreude meter buried the needle then :D

I do not approve of the language they used, but South Park did an episode on them that was RIGHT ON THE MONEY. They want attention, and to be seen as bad-boys/rebels. Plain and simple.

Wouldn't the pitch actually be lower, because the sound would be traveling slower than it usually would with respect to the vehicles which are traveling. The only way the pitch would be higher, would be if the bike is accelerating faster than the car it is approaching is traveling. Aw crap, I forgot to compensate for the fact that the source of the sound is moving and that's what changes the pitch.
Ok, so the sound would be the same if both vehicles were moving at the same speed as if they were stationary. Only if the bike is
accelerating towardtraveling faster and also behind (thanks accalia) the car, would the pitch be higher.Freaking physics.

It's easier to just assume relativity, since you'll be right most of the times I can think of.

Considering how they drive around here, they might be. While lane splitting.

...... yeah.... that's not good.
They're not supposed to go more than 10 mph over traffic (differential), or when traffic is moving faster than 30. I've seen them split when I'm doing 65 or 70. (not saying all, there are a few that follow those guidelines)
-
@fbmac said in Loud motorcycles dying?:

You didn't provide an opinion on this, but for what it's worth there's actually ZERO evidence that there's any safety benefit to this at all.
Nah; what these guys are after is attention. They want people to look at them and pay attention to them. And we're hard-wired by our instincts to look at things that suddenly make loud noises, so they get "attention" that way.
-
@dcon So it's not just int he UK where the shittiness of road conduct is inversely proportional to how protected the road user is.
I'm not kidding either. On UK roads, the best drivers are almost always lorry drivers, and despite their reputation, vans are normally fairly well driven. Car drivers tend to be more variable, but you can usually tell which ones will be cocks by the badge on the bonnet (four rings, the driver's a total anus; a lion on its hind legs, the driver's a braindead moron), and the majority across the whole country are driven acceptably.
Then you get motorbikes, who are more than happy to weave through motorway* traffic at 100mph or more.
But nothing compares to cyclists. To a cyclist, red lights are optional. Fuck, to a cyclist, being seen is optional; they'll happily ride at night with no lights whatsoever. Fucking suicidal they are, a quality shared by pedestrians, who will gladly walk out right in front of a ton-and-half of metal and plastic hurtling towards them at 30mph.

the preferred method for a car owner to express he is an idiot here is modifying it to get lower. that has the side effect to make very unpractical to drive one of these in brazillian roads.

Nope! I also stop (not necessarily foot down) at stopsigns. I've broken off from riding with groups because they're assholes.

Nope! Shiny and reflective for me.

Oh, we have those idiots, too. My car is pretty low to the ground in its stock form, and after scraping my front bumper on just about everything, I can't imagine why people would willingly subject themselves to that kind of punishment.

I love it when they put that privacy tinting on their back windows, then turn on the rear defrost in winter and it all bubbles-up.

@Groaner and we have large speed bumps everywhere, it's pretty usual to see someone with a lowered car driving almost sideways to be able to pass over a speed bump

@RaceProUK You've never ridden a bike (or motorbike) on UK roads, I take it.
I used to commute across London on a motorbike and pushbike, and worked as both cycle and motorcycle courier - although I have done my share of fucking stupid things (including getting a very well-deserved, and frankly rather generous, 5 points for "due care and attention" - I was lane splitting the A40 between Hangar Lane and Northolt at something around 50mph above "ambient" speed and hadn't seen the blue flashing light behind me) I've also lived the life of "most likely to become a corpse". When commuting, once a day on a pushbike and around twice a week on a motorbike, your life flashes before your eyes. You have to ride as though everyone else is psychotic, because they are. You don't want to know about being a courier. Life expectancy is low.
Lorry drivers are generally pretty good, but they can't see you. If they can't see you, they will kill you without knowing about it. Van drivers are in a hurry. If you're in the way, they will kill you. Car drivers got their licences free with a pack of Shreddies and all read the Daily Mail, thus hate anything on 2 wheels. They will kill you just because they feel like it.
So what happens is this. You've survived a very hostile environment for a week. A month. Six months. You are obviously invincible. It worked last time, so why not this time. I can get past that dithering cunt. If I slip past him, then dive left, I save myself 3 minutes on my delivery. That twat doesn't know where he's going, so I'll just whip past him. I'm holding up the couriers behind me, I'll shoot through on orange.
If you're lucky, you have a near miss, or the plod pull you over and tell you off, and that calms you down for a bit. If you're not lucky, body bag.
Anyone that tells you cyclists are irresponsible is a fucking moron.
