@accalia How does the chick in your avatar keep her top on?
Let's ask the important questions here.
-
@blakeyrat Based on the overall style of the picture - through magic.

same way the supermodels that don't want to become pornstars yet do it. Industrial strength double sided tape.
-
@Adynathos Question 2: what do you think the key on her necklace unlocks?
Lessee if Google will give me the full image... hm nope, only the DailyWTF cropped one. Oh well.

google and tineye seem to have trouble with rotations that are not multiples of 90 degrees.

You remember the movie "Robinhood men in tights"? You remember the garment Maid Marrion was wearing that required a key?
That.
-
@accalia Someday I hope to date a girl who wears titfeathers.
Well it's fucking terrible, but at least it's not anime, so you score a couple points there.
-
@blakeyrat i recommend finding someone who enjoys cosplay then.

Compliment.

Only in hipster nirvana Seattle.
-
@boomzilla Well, given the only reason my office space to date so far has had ceiling tiles is because they can't be arsed removing them (though they can be convinced to paint over the moldy ones)

Really? There's a place where new office space doesn't look like the inside of a parking garage?

over here on the east coast it's pretty standard to have acoustic damping tiles in the ceiling. the really schwanky places have active noise cancelling white noise generators in the ceiling too.
-
@accalia That's because east coast office space was invariably last updated before The Matrix came out.
-
@boomzilla I don't think I've ever worked in an office with noise-cancelling ceiling tiles. But then it doesn't get hot enough often enough over here to make AC a requirement; we're more concerned with not freezing during winter.

Staplegun.

not so. our office was last renovated three years ago, and i know of at least four completely new construction butildings in teh area that also have noise cancelling features built in.
the one on fore street even includes fooseball AND airhockey in their noise isolated break room. Major Jelly there.

What does A/C have to do with it? Honestly, I don't recall the last time I was in an office, anywhere, that didn't have ceiling tiles.
-
@dkf You know that hall of horrors I posted pics of in the WtfCorp thread? That's a break room.
-
@boomzilla Without AC, that's half the HVAC gone already. Basic ventilation has never been an issue anywhere I've worked, and heating can be done with silent convection heaters. Hard to be distracted by something that doesn't make a noise and is off for half the year anyway ;)
@boomzilla said in Recruiting Giants:

Depends how old the building is; quite a few in the UK are decades old, if not a couple hundred years.

This isn't satire? His entire site isn't satire?
I ... wow. I need a drink.

Yes, but what do you do with one of those things? What is a “break”?

It's that thing you dream of being able to have one day while typing one-handed and trying to cram a sandwich in before the next bugger rings you with a super urgent requirement.
We have a canteen, I think I've used it just once when my bowl of soup was too full to safely navigate back to my desk. I'm sure someone came and found me before I was finished though

Yes it is, I get paid to do it. Fuck off.The day we signed the contract we became employees. And employees get paid. I want. My fucking. MONEY.
(If I can make a valid counterargument by paraphrasing Michael Bay movies, then it's clearly an astonishingly stupid set of slides.)

It's also illegal in the EU thanks to the Working Hours Directive, which puts the limit at 48 hours.
Working Time Directive. Which can be opted out of. It's also an average over X weeks which doesn't rule it out completely even without opting out.

@dcon Well, several of them have fallen and nearly struck employees. I'm waiting for my black mold and asbestos laden soggy worker's comp claim lottery win.

It's that padded room they put you when you have a breakdown. Right?

I think all classes in the university I attend to mandates some Management 101 courses. I only attend Higher Diploma on Mathematics there but I also have 6 credits on the subject.

Hahaha! Where's that article about CEO being sociopaths?
Oh, here it's
It's psycopaths! Not even sociopaths but psycopaths, like those who murder women and children!

For those still reading this, here's a response to TFA from a game developer. I liked reading it.

Those are synonyms.
-
@MrL said in Recruiting Giants:
synonyms
While both are basically Antisocial Personality Disorders, there are differences. For one, Psychopaths are generally believed to have been born that way, where Sociopaths are made that way by their environment. Also, Psychopaths are less likely to be easily identifiable (appear normal for the most part) and will plan out their actions to reduce risk, where Sociopaths are more impulsive.
-
From what I read, 'sociopath' was introduced as a more accurate, more modern term for psychopath.
The older term was to be phased out of literature, but it didn't happen and both are still widely used.
Every time I read that their meaning differ, the differences are described differently, borders are blurry
and it seems that every doctor/psychologist has his own opinion.
-
@Weng Even out here in Silicon Valley, we try to avoid pulling crazy hours. We all have lives and take breaks. Most everyone from the CEO to sysadmin leaves for home by 5:30. Its really only early stage startups out here where you find folks working crazy hours. Unless of course someone chooses to work late. I'm a DBA and on call for one week a month. Its no worse than anywhere else and actually its better than other places I've worked.
-
@nullptr said in Recruiting Giants:

I think it's more that they're terms used by different fields; one field thinks that it's an inherent property and so calls it “psychopathy”, and the other that it's something induced and so calls it “sociopathy”. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there was some of column A and some of column B in the majority of cases…

I will start a KickStarter to fund his legal fees and unemployment costs if he'll go kick this guy in the nuts over and over, shouting "NUTKICKING IS MY PASSION! I'M A FUCKING GIANT!" over and over.
He might even be able to claim he's Aspergers and get a bonus out of it.
