This is so shameful, so un-American, so cowardly... I don't even know what to say.

News today: Republicans tripping over themselves to do exactly what terrorists were hoping they would do
Guy on BBC Radio 4 this morning said "ISIS' goal is to drive a chasm between people who did not hate each other before these atrocities".
It's working, by all accounts :(
-
Resettlement applications are handled by the U.S. State Department. The process takes between 18 and 24 months, and applicants are screened by the Department of Homeland Security and interviewed before being approved to relocate to the U.S.
Two fucking years of screening and they're still worried? I mean I would maybe kinda understand if they had hundreds of thousands of people rushing the border, but two years of screening for, quote-unquote:
resettling as many as 425 refugees in his state.
425 people. For fuck's sake. If one in 425 refugees was a bomber, Europe would look like bloody Fallout by now.

Not to mention that a moratorium on accepting refugees from countries that have a war with crazy violent psychopaths going on is pretty much the exact opposite of what the institution of a refugee was created for in the first place.
I mean fuck, correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole point of asylum is to provide shelter to the people coming from places where shit is boiling. And they refuse asylum to the people because in their country the shit is boiling. I mean Catch-22 has nothing on those guys.

so un-American
We have a history of this shit. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, unless they're from

It was wrong then, it's wrong now. I don't care if it's happened a million times, it's un-American and fuck that noise.

resettling as many as 425 refugees in his state.
425 to a state? The uproar around here is at hundreds per village. We've got how many thousands of refugees per day coming in now?
-
Acting in direct contradiction of the US Constitution would be an un-American thing. Uncle Sam controls immigration, not the States.
We seriously need to make politicians pass the Naturalization exam before they can run for anything higher than village idiot.

To try to maintain some semblance of staying on the original point, this article articulates the ISIS position extremely well (selective, but unaltered, quote);
"Now it is using tactical skills acquired on Middle Eastern battlefields to provoke an anti-Muslim backlash that will generate even more recruits within Western societies. The United States and its allies must respond quickly to this threat.
The Islamic State's strategy is to polarize Western society — to "destroy the grayzone," as it says in its publications. The group hopes frequent, devastating attacks in its name will provoke overreactions by European governments against innocent Muslims, thereby alienating and radicalizing Muslim communities throughout the continent."
Given the misguided hysteria in the media, this approach seems to be working great for ISIS (no sarcasm). Especially, given this article where 15 morons attacked a couple in their fifties who owned a takeout shop in Scotland (that hotbed of fundamentalism) as "revenge for Paris".
So ISIS did their thing, and now stand back and watch cretins of all religious backgrounds kick the shit out of each other.
(background which may or may not be relevant; I'm an atheist)

Saw on the news this morning a self-congratulatory piece on how our state is about to receive the first family (of 5, soon to be 6) of the Syrian refugees we have agreed to accept. Well, whoop de frigging do.I'm not sure how many we have agreed to take but I'm betting it's a pretty small number, this being the same country where politicians score significant political points by promising to be ever-harsher on illegal immigration and are happy to just lock everyone up in detention centres in the middle of nowhere* for several years while their claims are being processed.
- Australia has a lot of nowhere, so the middle of it is pretty damn isolated.

When do you suppose he'll start?
Uncle Sam will start having control as soon as Aunt Irma leaves.

"It all matters. That someone turns out the lamp, picks up the windblown wrapper, says hello to the invalid, pays at the unattended lot, listens to the repeated tale, folds the abandoned laundry, plays the game fairly, tells the story honestly, acknowledges help, gives credit, says good night, resists temptation, wipes the counter, waits at the yellow, makes the bed, tips the maid, remembers the illness, congratulates the victor, accepts the consequences, takes a stand, steps up, offers a hand, goes first, goes last, chooses the small portion, teaches the child, tends to the dying, comforts the grieving, removes the splinter, wipes the tear, directs the lost, touches the lonely, is the whole thing.
What is most beautiful is least acknowledged.
What is worth dying for is barely noticed."- Laura McBride

Wait, you have people calling for the refugees to prove that they are Christians?? I thought you guys were supposed to be big on religious liberty or something?
faith_in_humanity--;
-
Well, Republicans are big on religious liberty as long as it's some form of Christianity. They also have Donald Trump supporters if you think Christianity isn't crazy enough.
-
Well, Republicans are big on religious liberty as long as it's some form of Christianity.
Like that famous Ford quote on car colors.
-
I thought you guys were supposed to be big on religious liberty or something?
People often abandon their principles when they get scared.
often what? Shit their pants?
Also, yes.
-
Well, Republicans are big on religious liberty as long as it's some form of Christianity.
And Democrats are kind of opposite.
-
-
People often abandon their principles when they get scared.
Actually, I think it's more that a lot of people see that as a reasonable vetting criterion to keep out guys like the guy who snuck in through Greece. And the easy counter is to call them racists or whatever instead of debating the actual issue of how you vet the people coming in.
-
There are two simple rules you can follow when vetting a refugee:
- Assume people aren't dicks
- There is no second rule
Will you miss some terrorists that way? Undoubtedly. But you'll also avoid treating people who aren't terrorists like shit, which is far more important. Because people become terrorists when they're treated like shit.
Will there be "preventable deaths" from terrorism? Could be. There could be preventable deaths from coked-up truck drivers. There could be preventable deaths from that asshat CEO who raised the price of that medicine by 5000%. Preventable deaths happen for all sorts of reasons. If that's what you're worried about, I have a two simple rules:
- Distribute money fairly to programs based on the number of deaths they have the potential to prevent (for example, untreated mental health issues are a far bigger killer in the US than terrorism ever has been)
- There is no second rule
-
How many people will you kill if you don't get a raise?
-
There are two simple rules you can follow when vetting a refugee:
Yeah, that's one approach.
-
It's the human approach. These people aren't terrorists, they're running away from terrorists. Paris attacks? Terrible, for sure, but that's the day-to-day for syrians, if they're not being bombed by one side, the other, or both.
-

Well, at least one of those guys came in through the refugee program. But I know you're too afraid to be called a racist to notice stuff like that.

It's not that noticing is being skipped, it's just called "acceptable losses".

Well, at least one of those guys came in through the refugee program.
Guys, I hear that airplanes caused a building to kill a lot of people one time. Let's ban airplanes and buildings.
Well, at least one of those guys came in through the refugee program.
Guys, I hear that vests can have bombs in them. Let's ban vests.
Well, at least one of those guys came in through the refugee program.
Guys, I hear that some mass shootings happen in schools. Let's ban schools.
Well, at least one of those guys came in through the refugee program.
Guys, I hear that
etcetera.

Exactly.

I should play Papers, Please someday.
And I'd probably be better at it than the Greeks.

One of "those guys" may have come back into Europe through the usual refugee routes. How do we know this? Because a fake passport which was used to bring someone through the usual refugee routes was found near one of the totally dismembered (and in this case, so far utterly unidentifiable) corpses of the attackers.He/she may or may not have actually been the one using the passport. He/she may have killed an actual refugee for it. It doesn't matter. It's being used to drive a wedge between "muslims" and "the rest of the world", and that's exactly what ISIS want.
That seems to be what you want, too. You terrorist-loving cuntknuckle.
-
He was. His fingerprints match those obtained by Greece on entrance.

They matched his fingerprints. RTFA that blakey posted.

Your facts and pretty much everything you said in this post was wrong. But I'll give you this, courtesy of that reddit grandma thing:
-
Will you miss some terrorists that way? Undoubtedly. But you'll also avoid treating people who aren't terrorists like shit, which is far more important. Because people become terrorists when they're treated like shit.
That's a little overblown.
- Person in Syria is innocent.
- Person in Syria has family raped and killed by ISIS.
- Person hears that other country had bombing by person disguised as refugee.
- Person leaves and arrives in other country.
- Person is refused entry because other country is cautious.
- Person gets pissed, blames other country, and join ISIS, the group that raped and killed their family.
- Person joins in on raping and killing other persons.
I would have to say, Person is not the type of person I would want around me. They seem incapable of rational thought, and very unstable emotionally.
And, your argument is essentially. Let the unstable people around us so they don't kill us as much, is rather weak.
My approach is somewhat different.
- Put the refugees in temporary policed, sheltered, and controlled camps.
- Join Russia in bombing the fuck out of ISIS.
- Rebuild their cities.
- Bring the refugees back home, where the vast majority of actual refugees want to be (rather than the fake refugees who just want European welfare, who traveled from Egypt or other stable countries).
-
Distribute money fairly to programs based on the number of deaths they have the potential to prevent (for example, untreated mental health issues are a far bigger killer in the US than terrorism ever has been)
We do.
The military gets the largest % of our budget.
-
I hadn't seen that. But then the news of who knows what and what is who is where is changing on a day to day basis. Still, y'know it smells very suspicious.
OK, guys, ready to go blow yourselves up? Got your Kalashnikovs? Enough ammunition? TATP vests? Fake passports? And don't forget to drop those passports before you set your vests off, that way they'll be able to identify where you came (back) into Europe from.
But, like I said, it doesn't matter. The suggestion that terrorists are using the immigrant routes to get (back) into europe is being used as a rod to beat the immigrants with. As a shouting point to make political column inches. People will die as a result of it. Not terrorists, people. Desperate people with only hope to cling to.
Remember this?

I think that says rather more than your trite meme.

But, like I said, it doesn't matter.
Yes. Many people disagree. And you howling about racism isn't convincing either.
I think that says rather more than your trite meme.
Yes, "my" meme. Keep covering yourself in glory there.

Well, "you" were the one the "posted" it.As for the rest? Get fucked, you bigoted reactionary cunt.

Yeah, sorry to offend you by actually thinking about stuff.
Well, "you" were the one the "posted" it.
It seemed to be about on the level of your moral reasoning and general tone of discourse. I was going to post it in the Bang! thread or whatever, but then you happened along and it just seemed right. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

You do seem to think of yourself as emotionally stable and capable of rational thought even though you suffer from an anxiety disorder and start screaming more easily and more often than anyone I've seen here. I wonder how you would you imagine yourself after a few decades (it's been 14 years in Afghanistan and there's not even much "rebuilding" going on at all) in a concentration camp.
-
Ew... did you really have to post that here?
Oh, and I guess it looks like it's dead, too.
