I'm looking for a bit of advice on project/day planning software.
I've been relying on nested, prioritized to-do lists for my planning, implemented as text files. This works well enough, assuming I have my laptop with me. But now I have an Android phone and think there must be a better way.
What can I use as a to-do/scheduler/etc? My requirements are:
- prioritized items
- nested (i.e., can set goals and subgoals and sub-sub-goals and...)
- calendar integration, for things that must happen at specific times/days
- syncing between devices (ideally Web and Android, or even some kind of cross platform thing)
Things like Gantt diagrams are okay, but not necessary. In fact, I don't want any app that required me to estimate time. But then again, it would be okay if that was an option, and did time tracking too.
What do you use?

That's a point: is @todo still around?

Yeah. Every thing like this I end up thinking "this must be a solved problem". Then I research the options and find that, while there are many, all of them suck in ways which make them unsuitable.
Maybe I should quit WTFcorp and spend my life building apps for things that should be a fucking solved problem by now.
-
I don't use anything because I'm not that organized.
If I did however, I'd probably do it in Excel. And write some Q&A cell functions to help me out with stuffs. Possibly VBA. Why not.
-
Like @ben_lubar I use https://keep.google.com/ and https://calendar.google.com/ and their associated Android apps. Absolute lifesavers.
-
Classic school exercise? Should be pretty easy to sketch a small relational database schema and frontend.
Heck, you already have sample data!

Google Keep
That doesn't seem well developed. I've tried to enter one simple note, and gotten "OOPS SOMETHING WENT WRONG: RELOAD" 5 times by now. Then I deleted the note, and now the whole page is stuck.Or did I misunderstand the intended use, and is "Keep" short for "Keep me busy"?
-
How would you cope on mobile? Or are you lugging your laptop with you all the time?
-
I use the OSX Sticky Notes app, as if I'm working then my laptop is with me anyway.
-
How would you cope on mobile?
Mobile Excel or the online version? But I doubt either has VBA support.
-
I use Trello which is pretty simple. It apparently doesn't yet handle sublists but there is a Chrome plugin for that.
-
That's a point: is @todo still around?
i turned him off a while ago when 2.0 hit as i was the only one to ever use him and i didn't upgrade the todo plugin to 2.0.
if there's interest i could turn him on again.
-
I recommend this 100% if you use an Android phone and Chrome as your browser.

I guess that can happen with a flaky connection, or in the rare case that there are server problems on Google's side. Give Keep another try, in my experience it works well. The mobile app is pretty good, too.
An alternative that works just as great is Microsoft's OneNote. Notes are stored on
SkyOneDrive, and there are (mobile) apps that hook into that. Works pretty great too, I use OneNote while at work.

And data entry is a bitch.
-
I've take to using jira as my todo list. It really fucks off my manager when I close 7 refactor variable names at once when there are higher priority things to do.
-
My mobile device runs Excel just fine. I dunno if Android does.
I used to use Project, ages ago, and it's kind of good for this stuff, but it's also very "heavy" and keeping it updated is a pain.
-
I dunno if Android does.
There's the Google version ("Sheets" I think) which works okay for a spreadsheet on a 5-inch touch screen.
-
Android has Excel too.
-
Not sure it fits all your requirements, but for a checklist I use Asana.
You can share list with co-workers, you can have multiple projects, etc.
I even use it for my grocery list.
-

Isn't data entry itself a bit of a pain there? Or you use it read-only?
-
I dunno. I've never done data entry on Excel on my mobile device.
-
I hate to bring up spoelsky but how about trello. The delete function does't work but the rest of it is good. I'm sensing a link with Discocourse.
-
I've used Google Sheets for something yesterday, where simply using the Calculator app wouldn't suffice. It's pretty decent, but typing in data is a pain :(
-
Based on all your terrible advice, I am trying Todoist. I'll check out Trello and Asana if it doesn't work out, but I am liking it so far.

I had no idea google keep existed. However, when I fired it up to check it out, it flat out REFUSED to load ANYTHING unless I unblocked google-analytics from noscript. Which I always leave blocked.
Nope. Hard nope. Not opening myself up to tracking ALL OF THE THINGS to use a fucking notepad "in the cloud."

Another company I've sold my soul too. Although for all the data they have on me they never have relevant ads for me. Since fucking when do I need my own company's product.

Ads? What are Ads? [adblock ]

I dunno, apparently they think I REALLY need a beer every time I go anywhere on the internet...

How exactly does Google Analytics do that more than any other website logging device? Are you scared that the government will know what your screen resolution is?
-
Ads? What are Ads?
Am I the only person who was in favor of adblock's option to show non-annoying ads?

Why does it have to be that I am scared? Why can't it be that I simply don't want to be tracked around the internet by a single company (in this case, Google) so they can try to build a profile on me and sell that to marketers to try to put ads in front of me based on my browsing habits? It is the same reason I don't give out my home address on ANYTHING except absolutely essential documents -- everything else gets the PO Box. You want to send me garbage, send it there. I change the box every couple of years or so without leaving a forwarding address, and the marketers all lose the ability to reach me at that point. I have much more control over who tracks me around on the internet, and I exercise it. I am not scared of them or the tracking at all. I simply refuse to allow it. If you aren't bothered by it, then by all means, enjoy ;)
-
My dad got an email from AT&T with a subject like "so we heard you were moving out", presumably because we got a new furnace that isn't older than me.

My ISP insists that my IP is static.
All you have to do is find out my location history and you'll figure out my home.
Now you know where I live, and every site I visit can be tied to that home.

Meh, there are also limits to how far I am willing to go to block it

At this point not using the internet is about the only way to effectively block it. everywhere you go online you leave clues, hints, and facts about who you are, where you are, what your browsing hostory is like, what your interests are like and even what you are likely to spend money on. this is all information that is freely available and in the public domain to be collected. all it takes is someone to buy enough data to start piecing it all together...
The internet is public, and everyone is being watched.

I wasn't, but now I've added that to my todo list.
