Hiring devs

I think I'd prefer hiring a webdev who hasn't been corrupted by TDD
Yeah TDD, like most things in our sector, takes things too far. This write the tests up front stuff is only going to end in tears. Try writing some code and experimenting. Then apply unit tests.A test may be to see if button X exists and an automated test may claim that it does, but it cannot tell if it visible or even accessible.
Or if the edits to the layout manager has moved the buttons under the view instead of beside it. Show stopper that one despite QA not even catching it... Another unhappy ending. To answer the OP's question if they're a shithot html/javascript developer and that's what you need then you can probably overlook it. If they're going to the backend you should probably think hard about it.

At first I voted "No" but then I remembered about Mocha and qUnit and... they're lucky if they never had to write a unit test.
OTOH, if this was a position for something else, the answer is no.

Would you hire a webdev who had never written a unit test before?
Yes, but I'd expect them to learn how and why to write a unit test double-quick. I'd also want them to figure out out when a unit test should be written and when some other kind of test should be preferred.
(Unit testing of user interfaces is problematic because they're really integration points with another system: the user. The unit test is not the most important kind of test for that sort of thing in the first place.)

No, that's Star Wars. Star Trek is the one with Kirk and the Enterprise.
You're thinking of Midway, where Spruance got Enterprise and Hornet turned into the wind and Moses sunk those Jap bastards.

I wanted to vote "Maybe" but I voted "No" instead. Having said that, I don't think I've ever written a unit test that I was paid to write...
Filed under: seriously Discourse, if you had brought this thread to my attention 10 days ago, then I would've replied to it then, revive kills zombie, how are the new forums coming?
