The end of the revenge of teh zalgo
-
Continuing the discussion from THE REVENGE OF /t/1k: Onward to 100k posts!:
OK, I think that's enough with the Zalgotext.
Request for stylesheet change
To eliminate the threat of zalgo, can we please add
overflow: hidden
to posts?div.cooked { overflow: hidden; }
Paging @PJH and @BOOMzilla

WITH:
WITHOUT:
strong text
-
Psh. No fun.
-
i like being able to read things, zalgo makes that impossible. this contains the zalgo
-
div.cooked {
overflow: hidden;
}Yeah, just tried that, too. What about other overflow tricks? Would
auto
be better?
-
That would imply that there are important things to read here.
-
Auto appears to be the same as hidden in this case:
-
Also @admins, was it the zalgo giving the server cooties? Can we get some more info on what happened?
-

Yeah...but what about other shenanigans? I don't remember what they were, but I remember there being stuff. It becomes a question of stuff that gets hidden and therefore requiring people to check raw. Or seeing scrollbars (assuming it works) and realizing the poster was screwing around with stuff.
Maybe we don't care.
-

probably not. that's just a client side thing.
that being said this is ruby and i'm not putting much past it
Can we get some more info on what happened?
no, but i can give you pretty graphs:
http://servercooties.io/#graph.... i really need to get a SSL cert for that domain.
-
I checked servercooties.com and saw the load times spiking ridiculously. Not sure if it was caused by me or not, I've seen servers choke on weird unicode before although it's typically the client.
-
Well, I just tried some and got a small blip.
-

well most of the hidden text shenanigans rely on invalud HTML or nesting it deep enough that the fiirefox performance rule kicks in preventing too deeply nested from shopwing up.
Maybe we don't care.
-shrug-? i don't see much downside here. it's just rendering invisible what you managed to shove outside the post boundaries.
would prevent signature guy style tricks of course.
-
I checked servercooties.com
same site )literally same server and everything), less sexy domain name. ;-)
-
It becomes a question of stuff that gets hidden and therefore requiring people to check raw
yes, because nobody ever abused
<
for that!Let's face it. If you deface your own post, thats pretty bad. but with giant zalgo you deface other peoples posts!
Filed Under: I mean, it's your decision in the end but at least temporarily changing overflow does make sense!
Addendum: Yeah yeah, by @accalia... whatever I still stand by my post!
-
I vote to leave it, in case someone makes a really awful post that needs to be "deleted" by the community.
-
I so totally want to flag your post for deletion now... but I don't think we have a flag that works that way... So you are in luck!
Filed Under: Also, wouldn't that delete 99% of posts on this forum? Just wondering!
-
I so totally want to flag your post for deletion now...
you could flag it spam. that's weighted pretty heavily when coming from TL3s
-
But that would be TL3-ABUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I don't want blakeyrat to get all angry and stuff!
Filed Under: still almost better than ZANGO-ABUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
If I can get a cool description of what's choking server-side, I'll go put in a report on meta.d.
-
-
When sam looked at the logs before his conclusion was "big topics." I don't think that's changed significantly. The cooties seem to be worse today. I'm thinking it might be time to give /t/1000 another rest.
-
OK, I've applied the changes to TDWTF Default and Widescreen Minimal. Probably requires a refresh.

Thanks!
(sorry @RaceProUK)

No way jose!

My understanding is that its only particularly effective against TL0s (and possibly TL1s).
Probably requires a refresh.
CSS changes don't (didn't?)seem to require it.

I figure this is like rebooting windows. Don't lodge a complaint until you've refreshed.
-
What if your complaint is "Can't refresh"? ;P
My understanding is that its only particularly effective against TL0s (and possibly TL1s).
So first a flag for trustholing the user to TL0 and THEN spam-flags. I got it!
Filed Under: Which flag was that again? The "message user"-one? :D
-
What if your complaint is "Can't refresh"?
I don't want to hear that ever, so my original advice is still good.
-
-
Or we could switch to a text representation that guarantees basic assumptions like "characters do not flow out of the box you're rendering in".
(I know, I know, we can't actually do that)
-
Boooooo!
-
Errrrmmm...
Posts have scrollbars now?!
-
Crud. Fixed. Used auto instead of hidden.
